Portland Climate Convergence Action

From the open publishing newswire: Today, August 4, 2008, in the final event of the Climate Convergence, about two dozen people participated in a multi faceted rally, street theater, and march to NW Natural Gas.

The first portion of the action took place along the Portland Waterfront, just north of the west side of the Hawthorne Bridge, where, amid chants and exhortations in favor of riding bicycles, tickets were given to mock automobiles by officers of the Oil Enforcement Agency. Replete with chants and signs, the event was mainly organized around resistance to the proposed 6 lane I-5 bridge over the Columbia River.

Leaving there the gathering marched along the Waterfront, where at the Morrison Bridge they came upon a young man locked down on an access ramp to the Morrison Bridge. As the group arrived, a young woman climbed the structure of the bridge and unfurled a banner which read, "6 More Lanes = More Sick People NO EXPANSION."

Another sad memorial wall

From the open publishing newswire: As we drove to Silverton today, we passed by the memorial along Highway 213 which honors Andrew Hanlon, the Irish citizen who was shot and killed by officer Tony Gonzalez early this month. The Grand Jury has since decided that Officer Gonzalez was justified in killing Hanlon. No surprise there. We are getting used to officers being exonerated after their thoughtless and deadly actions. Will we ever get used to these memorials? There were notes from Andrew's friends, declarations of solidarity and flags of Ireland fluttering in the summer breeze. I thought about Fouad Kaady, another unarmed man killed in Sandy by officers quick to pull their triggers. In Portland there have been many such deaths. Each of them has been discussed and remembered on this site. Here are pictures of this memorial so we can put a face to this most recent murder.

Oregon Humane Society Goes Porno

From the open publishing newswire: While stopping in at Oregon Humane Society to adopt a new dog, I was shocked to see Playboy Playmates in the lobby. What were they doing there? Apparently they were invited to help adopt out none other than bunnies.

Now I am not a prude, but with the shelter filled with children participating in something called camp and parents bringing children in to adopt a new pet, is the Oregon Humane Society an appropriate place for member of the corporate sex industry to set up shop? Whoever chose to use Playboy Playmates, most of whom moonlight as strippers, as a PR stunt definitely isn't in tune with what a family oriented organization is. I am saddened by this.
