Cops say we should just dance in downtown?

Come on people - have the cops have taken over your site? Cheney will be in town and when someone comes to town that you want to protest you go to WHERE they are going to be and protest.
I'm just curious who believes we should protest a VP visit to Portland by going downtown? As I mentioned in another post - would you protest the portland city council by setting up a protest in Vancouver? Would you protest the Portland police by setting up a protest on a random intersection in Beaverton? Would it be effective to protest the GOP by setting up a protest in fron t of the Democratice offices or in pioneer square or the south park blocks? Come on people - have the cops have taken over your site? Cheney will be in town and when someone comes to town that you want to protest you go to WHERE they are going to be and protest. What a bunch of idiots going downtown to protest miles away from the actualy location which will be filled with 550 big money GOP donors. They'll all be laughing all the way home when they find out a bunch of wimpy protesters couldn't even make it out to the airport and decided to stand around MILES AWAY in downtown. Have fun.

I wouldn't be surprized if this isn't all a cop plan to disrupt and devide us. I just ask people to think about it. Dancing against Cheney? Come on what a load of crap...It'll be fun to see the news making fun of you later tonight. I'll be WHERE Cheney is.

you don't honestly think Dick gives a fuck what protestors think, do you? Protest intended to be seen by the public and downtown is better than the airport for visibility. If anyone is the cop, it's you "packet". Shut up yammering. Go to the airport if you like, but quit pissin and moanin

I fully agree...this Dance in the Streets for Cheney...is 13.Jan.2004 10:25

a tactic

straight out of the textbook from the KROEKER INSTITUTE OF CROWD CONTROL (or whatever the name of his ego-
driven school he sought funding for, so that while his butt might be run out of here, at least his name and his idea's
would remain...to taint the community only more with his brand of craziness). I mean...get REAL...who but a silly go-
by-the-book dimwitted moronic bureaucrat (which is WHAT a lot of the PoPo are...albeit, with a blue uniform, gun, &
a badge...but still a "bureaucrat"...same-same!) would come up with such silliness? Do you honestly believe that a
hip, intelligent, critical-thinking, socially aware protester would dream up such madness? So...to protest, you've got
to GET REAL! And to "get real" you've got to see through the smokescreens, and pull the blue curtain back from the
little room at City Hall and then see the very scared little people running around amok inside, wringing their hands
as they "dream up" such silliness as means to control the crowds that they know are sure to be out for this event!

So...given this...those of you who'd dance away anyway...just come and dance, for your effectiveness as a protester
would have been nothing but a lark to begin with...and sure to be televised on ALL the local newscasts as example
of the people who came out to protest against Cheney...the looney fringe groupies! It's propaganda at it's best, folks!

I'm glad the planning for this action has been done AWAY from IMC this time. When Bush visited, the popo were too well informed by monitoring this site. I still have reservations about the plan to use MAX to transfer the entire group from PCH to PDX, however. The city will certainly stop MAX service when the group boards the train downtown. Disrupting MAX service is not in anyone's best interest and all on board are sitting ducks.

Protest downtown is fine but the VP will not be there 13.Jan.2004 10:51

>you don't honestly think Dick gives a fuck what protestors think, do you?

No I don't - the point is to connect the two events. Cheney visit = Protest at Cheney visit. Not protest miles away unrealted to actually events of the day.

>Protest intended to be seen by the public and downtown is better than the airport for visibility.

Sure that would be fine if you wanted to organize a protest of the Bush administration or the "war on terror" or any other general cause, but when the protest is organized in relation to the visit of a person or persons to the region the usual tactic is to protest AT the location that person might actually be at. I'm fine with it if people really want to go downtown and dance about Cheney. However the first organized action for today was called by a known group and is planned at the airport, this dancing in downtown post was made by who? You see my point? I honestly think there is some disinformation going on here. And in my opnion I thinking protesters dancing miles away in downtown will be really funny and make the protest look silly and un-effective - which is what who might want? Me? No, I actualy want it to be effective at showing the GOP donors (remember them) that the people of Portland don't support them or "their" administration.

>If anyone is the cop, it's you "packet".

Oh yes I am sorry I must have forgot to mention that. Boy you really saw through my cover...

Shut up yammering. Go to the airport if you like, but quit pissin and moanin

Sorry I like to piss and moan and it's a free country and open publishing isn't it?

hello, packet? 13.Jan.2004 12:36

get real

"Sorry I like to piss and moan and its a free country... isn't it?"

Buddy, its not. If you're on this site, you should know that. Now, if it was a free country like you say, this discussion over tactics would be a moot point.

Go to the airport, go downtown. Different strokes for different folks, as they say. They are both fine methods of protest. Let's kick some Dick.

Dance Against Dick 13.Jan.2004 18:57

mia

Stop taking yourselves all so seriously. Why is this even being debated? I for one was at the Dance against Dick...one reason was I couldnt make it to the airport.. it is useful to protest where cheney is but in all reality the only people who would see the protestors are the COPS, NOT Cheney,NOT the people buying the dinner plate for a 1000 bucks. When I was downtown today half the people who approached us didnt even know he was in town today...one woman asked "Whose Dick?". the whole thing was kept off Indymedia because of the cops using Indymedia to thier advantage. The reality is, is that if you wanted to you could have gone to BOTH and BOTH would have been just as effective as the other. So get off it already and go do something. Ya'll are starting to piss me off.

WHY PROTEST DOWNTOWN? I WILL TELL YA! 13.Jan.2004 20:12

st

There are many reasons for gathering downtown for a protest, regardless of where the subject of the protest may be.

They are:

1) Ease of public transportation and proximity of the protesters to downtown.
2) Drums and chanting noise amplified by buildings structures.
3) High availability of plate glass windows for the self-proclaimed anarchists to shatter.
4) Easier to block the relatively narrow downtown streets thus ensuring a confrontation with Police. (Jim Lockhart will capture every moment)
5) High visibility to news choppers when groups gather on bridges.

Did I miss anything?
