In the summer of 2001, just months before 9/11, George W. Bush flew to Genoa, Italy to attend the economic summit of 8 leading industrialized nations. What did 50,000-80,000 protesters have to do with a terrorist assassination plot? Nothing. July 21, 2004 (revised Nov 26, 2004) 2nd-Op The G8, as it's called, includes the leaders of Germany, France, Russia, Canada, Italy, Japan, Britian and the United States. They met in Genoa in late July 2001, 7 weeks before 9/11. 7 weeks before the trajic events of 9/11, there was also a plot to assassinate George W. Bush. 50,000-80,000 protesters were on hand to protest the meeting. German police notified Italian intelligence of an anarchist group that would also be at the event. This group was coming to provoke police and did not appear associated with anti-globalist acitivists, said Alessio Vinci of CNN, nor did they have anything to do with an assasination attempt. During altercations, Carlo Giuliani(23) was killed by a stray bullet shot by carbenieri apparently in self defense. The protesters were not told of the plot or the dangers that it may or may not entail. One of those warnings came from Italian Deputy Prime Minister Gianfranco Fini. "Islamic extremists were said to be trying to hit Bush in the air", he told Panorama news magazine. Egyptian President, Hosni Mubarak was informed of a threat weeks before the meeting, using "airplanes stuffed with explosives", he told french television. Egyptian intelligence had passed this warning on to American officials. Italian Foreign Minister, Renato Ruggiero said, "What I know is that intelligence (services) in Italy knew that an air attack was considered to be possible and that was the reason why we closed the airspace in Genoa during the G8 summit". German secret service was also aware and passed information to Italian authorities, this was more specific. The bomb attack involved Osama Bin Laden. Yevgeny Murov, head of Russia's bodyguard service for President Putin, also said, "Bin Laden is threatening the American president, but we know what international terrorism is today and therefore all the bodyguard units concerned are preparing for this. We view the threats as totally serious, but hope that with joint efforts we can solve all the problems." Ari Fleischer, white house spokesman, was aware of the threat, but did not comment further. Given the amount of warnings and knowing the loose specifics of the assassination plot, Italian authorities prepared. Unprecedented massive security was established as well as a "red zone". Italy began by imposing border controls, steel rings surrounding the meeting were raised for protesters, however, surface-to-air-missiles(missile batteries) were also brought in and air space was shut down around the meeting due to the terrorist threat. 15,000 police were also on hand, as well as fighter jets and naval ships. In total, $110 million was spent to ensure the safety of the G8 leaders, specifically George W. Bush, from the threats of Osama Bin Laden and the use of airplanes carrying explosives. This was just 7 weeks before the attack on the WTC in NYC, and Pentagon in Washington, would materialize.
Due to lack of imagination by US intelligence, the United States was not able to thwart a similar attack. This may have been due to the fact that the warning George W. Bush received about attacks on the United States in the August 6 PDB entitled, "Bin Laden determined to strike in the US", did not involve an assassination plot.
The Guardian reported that Osama Bin Laden and the Taliban had received threats of US military action against them earlier in July and it raised the possibility that 9/11 was a pre-emptive strike, as well as the warnings surrounding the G8 summit. The New York Times reported a senior US security official saying that the volume of warnings from foreign intelligence agencies was often so great that serious threats were frequently difficult to separate from false alarms. After the 9/11 attacks in the United States, Gianfranco Fini said, "Many people joked about the Italian intelligence force. But actually they had information that in Genoa there was the hypothesis of an attack on the American president with the use of an aeroplane, that is why we closed the airspace above Genoa and installed anti-aircraft missiles. Those who joked should now reflect." Perhaps we should all reflect.
