Where are Portland's Peace Activists?

Calling Peace Activists of Portland
I was at Pioneer Square on Sunday standing in protest of the horrible attack on the people of Gaza. As tears were rolling down my cheeks in the freezing cold, I remembered the large march I attended almost 2 years ago in Portland, where over 20,000 people came to protest the Iraq war.

Where are they today? Why are they silent now? WHERE ARE YOU people NOW? Are you really against war or just the Iraq war? If you are against the occupation of Iraq, why are you SILENT while the LONGEST occupation in the ME is still ongoing and people are dying in their beds NOW?? Is it a numbers issue? Must more Palestinians starve and die? Is it a sympathy issue because you have some emotional hang-up with Israel and you can't get yourself to see TRUTHFULLY that they are the AGGRESSOR?

Have you noticed that the left and especially anarchists in Israel are protesting this aggression? Why don't you?

I'm thoroughly disappointed and saddened that so few Portlanders came to the protest on Sunday. The same phenomenon appeared 1,5 years ago when Lebanon was being attacked by Israel. I attended two rallies for a cease-fire then and the turnout was SHAMEFUL for Portland!!! Why are peace-activists so selective when it involves Israel? Can Israel do no harm in your eyes?

If you are against war crimes, against occupation of a defenseless people, against collective punishment, deliberate starvation and fascism, I EXPECT TO SEE YOU

SATURDAY, Jan 10 at PIONEER SQUARE at 3 PM!

Things For Activists To Do This Week 07.Jan.2009 21:41

Ben Waiting (reposting from email) iam@joe-anybody.com

Dear friends,

We've been receiving many e-mails and calls requesting information about demonstrations and other actions responding to the Israeli atrocities in Gaza. Please spread the word and please tell folks who are interested that they can get on our action announcements list by contacting PPRC at  pprc@riseup.net. Americans United for Palestinian Human Rights
(www.auphr.org) will also be pleased to add to their action announcement list; they can be contacted through their website.

There are several actions planned over the next few days here in Portland, each listed below. Please try to come out for these demonstrations calling for an immediate cease-fire in Gaza, and equally important, please keep the phone calls to our representatives in Washington, DC (contacts also listed below, and links posted at the PPRC website at www.pprc-news.org).
Representative Blumenauer has called for a cease-fire and engagement. We need to convince Senators Wyden and Merkley, and our other representatives, to do the same!

In solidarity,

PPRC General Meeting

EVERYONE CONCERNED ABOUT PEACE AND JUSTICE MUST SPEAK OUT NOW FOR A JUST PEACE IN THE MIDDLE EAST!

DEMAND: IMMEDIATE cease fire, justice for the people of Palestine, an end to U.S. funding of war.

Our Palestinian brothers and sisters in Gaza need us to take to the streets and demand an end to the massacre. A serious humanitarian crisis is happening.

Agence France-Presse reported that the first person killed when the Israeli military began to enter Gaza on Saturday, January 6th, was a Palestinian child.

Tuesday morning, we woke up to the news that the Israeli military has slaughtered 30 and wounded 55 Palestinian civilians taking refuge at a UN School. The bombardment from land, air and sea is continuing and the death toll nears 600 Palestinian men, women and children and over 2,500 wounded.

SATURDAY: Bring your Palestinian Flags and signs, bring your messages calling for IMMEDIATE CEASE FIRE and for peace in the Middle East.

TELL YOUR FRIENDS, FAMILY AND NEIGHBORS TO COME -- ALL AMERICANS WHO CARE ABOUT PEACE AND JUSTICE MUST SPEAK OUT ABOUT THIS HUMANITARIAN CRISIS THAT DOES NOTHING BUT DECREASE CHANCES FOR A JUST MIDDLE EAST PEACE!

Speak out NOW for these demands!

- Immediate and unconditional cease-fire by Israel NOW! -- this is a Humanitarian Crisis. The world and our leaders cannot stand by in silence -- CEASE FIRE NOW!

- Open Gaza's borders -- end the imprisonment of the people of Gaza; allow all humanitarian aid to enter.

- It is our job, as citizens in a democracy, to demand of our leaders that they stop this blind support of Israel's policies and instead commit all efforts towards peace and justice.

- End U.S. military support to Israel. Our tax dollars are buying the weapons that are being used against the civilian populations of Gaza and the West Bank. This is in serious violation of international law and is totally immoral.

Israel's security/Palestinians' security and a lasting and JUST peace will not be won by military means, but by fair negotiations for a free and equal Palestinian state.

This action is called for by Americans United for Palestinian Human Rights, Portland Peaceful Response Coalition, Sabeel North America, American Jews for a Just Peace, Lutherans for Justice in the Holy Land - A Ministry of Central Lutheran Church, American Friends Service Committee and other organizations.
