In the spirit of local resistance and global solidarity, the Blue Heron Infoshop is organizing a house show this Friday for the Syrian Local Coordination Committees and the Civil Liberties Defense Center. There will be music from Absent Minds, Blowing Up Bridges, Qulp, Vera Lynn, and special guests Danger Death Ray. No cover, $5 unlimited beer with all proceeds going to the groups.
The Local Coordination Committees are a decentralized, grassroots network of Syrian opposition activists in 14 regions. Their actions include refusing to pay utility bills, documenting abuses by the state, and organizing general strikes. By their count, the death toll in Syria was 7,100 as of February. llcsyria.org
The Eugene-based Civil Liberties Defense Center uses education, litigation, legal support, and outreach to defend civil liberties. They've fought against the Green Scare, presented over 150 Know Your Rights trainings, helped an Oregon mosque defend itself from the first-ever FBI subpoena of religious records, and defended over 140 activists. cldc.org
