BEND Oregon State Police Capt. William Fugate was charged Tuesday with two misdemeanor counts of harassment following a months-long investigation by the Deschutes County Sheriff's Office.

Fugate has been on paid administrative leave since February. The day he was placed on leave, his wife was granted a restraining order against him.

Tuesday, Oregon State Police announced that Fugate, who previously worked as the agency's spokesman, was put on unpaid administrative leave pending the outcome of the criminal charges.

"While Captain Fugate is entitled to due process, the Oregon State Police strongly condemns acts of domestic violence, which is especially alarming and disgraceful when involving a police officer," state police Superintendent Travis Hampton said in a press release. "Conduct of this nature is grossly unacceptable, and employees that engage in these actions have no place in law enforcement."

Details of the charges were not immediately available, but in her request for a restraining order, Fugate's wife, Georgina Monrean-Fugate, 41, alleged that her husband took away her phone and held her at her Bend home last November.

"He had a gun, and I feared that he would shoot me," she wrote in the document.

Fugate, an 11-year state police employee, was paid $123,516 a year.
