Jose Mejia Poot--IT'S NOT OVER!! Hearing Thurs. Jan. 22 @ St. Andrew's
It has been almost 3 years since the killing of Mexican immigrant Jose Mejia Poot at the hands of Portland police. The Latino community has been trying that whole time to get some accountability from the Portland police for their racist and violent behavior. The police Citizen Review Committee TRIED to hear this case last year, and were prevented from doing so by City officials who sabotaged the process--this incident led to the resignation of the majority of CRC members, who denounced the entire "citizen review" process as a sham. Now the ex-CRC members are trying to carry out their responsibility as private citizens to make sure this case is not forgotten. Let's all be there to support them, and support our Latino brothers and sisters!

Community urged to call Ladd's Meat bldg owner to tell him "NO to Starbucks in 7 Corners!"
From the open publishing newswire: You've probably seen the stories here on Portland IMC about how Starbucks wants to put a new store in SE Portland, in the area known as 7 Corners. Obviously, a lot of people are against it. That's an area of local businesses for the most part, and a lot of liberal or radical people who don't like Starbucks live there. I hear there's a meeting coming up to organize a campaign, but in the meantime, you could call the owner of the property, Peter Perrin, at (503) 890-7291 and tell him not to do it!

Low Powered radio project update
Help us Build a Community Owned and Operated Low Power FM Radio Station. Rogue Valley Citizens interested in building a low power fm radio station come to Talent United Methodist Church, Talent Oregon, on January 30th at 7:00p.m. to meet with Pete Tridish from Prometheus and find out how to build a community owned and operated radio station. Moe information call suzia (541) 482-0102. The Prometheus Radio Project and the Coalition of Immokalee Workers successfully put a new community radio station (pictured) on the air in December at a radio barnraising.

The CIW is a community-based farm worker organization. Their members are largely Latino, Haitian, and Mayan Indian immigrants working in low-wage jobs throughout the state of Florida. They may be best known as the leaders of the nationwide Taco Bell boycott. Radio Barnraisings are conferences where we build an entire Low Power Radio Station from the microphone to the antenna, and gather radio activists, engineers, and community media makers from around the world to trade skills, learn, and plan the microradio movement for the next months. ANTI-RACISM | ENVIRONMENT 16.01.2004 22:53
Conference on Environmental Racism
Poor communities, who have the smallest portion of America's wealth, suffer the brunt of the country's pollution and waste. People of color often make up these communities. This is, essentially, the problem of environmental racism. The Environmental Justice Movement has responded to environmental racism by empowering individuals and communities to gain access to their right to be involved in environmental policy making and enforcement.

Hundreds of activists, community members, and students will converge at the University of Oregon for this year's CAER (Coalition Against Environmental Racism) Conference entitled, "The Power of One." The Conference begins on Friday, January 23 and continues through Sunday, January 25, 2004. The Conference celebrates the power of individuals to make sustainable changes toward social and environmental justice. It is free and open to the public. Workshop topics include discussions about racism in the environmental movement, educational panels about local Northwest environmental justice issues and "tools for change" trainings to share community organizing strategies. There will also be a reception on Saturday that will include a poetry slam featuring Womb Dialectic members, Turiya Autry and Mic Crenshaw. Breakfast and lunch will be provided for Conference attendees.

Videos on Gaza Sun 1/18 - Books to Prisoners Benefit
Portland Books To Prisoners will be hosting a benefit showing of Videos from Gaza this coming Sunday January 18th starting at 8:30 pm at Vinnie's Pizza, corner of N. Vancouver and Killingsworth. Vegan Pizza will be an option!

These films focus on efforts by the International Solidarity Movement in defense of Palestinian civil rights, and the shooting of internationals in the Gaza strip, including journalists filming there. Presently Internationals are being denied entry into Gaza.

The horror of life in prison and in Gaza is a reality that many of us Americans have no understanding of. But since 1979, as the numbers of people incarcerated in this country has increased 7-fold, more and more people in this country are finding out what life in prison is like. Books to Prisoners helps by sending books to people in prison, and we hope to politicize people in prison. Mailing nights are Mondays and Tuesdays 5-8 pm.

For more info on the statistics of incarceration in the U.S. go to www.prisonpolicy.org/prisonindex.shtmland check out the Prison Index, put out by the Prison Policy Initiative and the Western Prison Project (www.westernprisonproject.org)

DOWN WITH DICK! 13.01.2004 07:58
Cheney Demo Plans
King of Clubs Cheney Sorry it hasn't been up till now. But here's the info for the BIG demo tommorrow.

12:30pm- Dance Against Dick! Meet at Pioneer Square. Bring your favorite costume, your favorite instrument, or your boombox and your favorite music. This is going to be a marching dance party to show our disapproval of Dick's visit to Portland and our solidarity to each other. We'll have lots of fun and dancing, as well as a DICK CHENEY PINATA, with prizes for the young and old. We want this to be fun for everyone (except for Dick of course), so please be respectful to everyone.

3:00 pm- Dirty Dancing Against Dick Meet in the South Park Blocks. Same as the 12:30 march, only without the immediate marching or the pinata. It has also been rumored that there will be a second march leaving the South Park Blocks at 4:30 as well.

There is also a protest going on at the Embassy Suites at the air port at 4:30pm which is, I believe, going to be organized by Greenpeace. However, it has seemed to us that it would be less practical to go to Dick Cheney's location to protest. All this will accomplish is to assure that we will efficiently be swept into "free speech" area's, which, as we all know, is simply a chain link fence protected by threat of violent police retaliation. Hope to see you all there. It'll be fun

Bush's best performance yet! It's a documentary, it's a comedy, it's a love story and it's probably like nothing you've seen before. When rogue reporters in a routine press conference terrorize bush with real questions, bush panics and flees into the wilds of portland, leading him on a profound and life-altering adventure. What will happen when bush and Truth collide? Can he leave his sordid and ignorant past behind? Can the mysterious Jeremy Flame help george discover his true identity? Come and see it now before it's banned... seriously.

This movie is rated O, for Offensive, not suitable for little children and even most adults. there will also be other shorts by local and other West coast independent filmmakers and refreshments too. so, stop by and share in a laugh. :)

"We are members of the most destructive culture ever to exist. Our assault on the natural world, on indigenous and other cultures, on women, on children, on all of us through the possibility of nuclear suicide and other means--all these are unprecedented in their magnitude and ferocity. Why do we act as we do? What are sane and effective responses to outrageously destructive behavior? What will it take for us to stop the horrors that characterize our way of being? My work and life revolve around these questions." - Derrick Jensen

J13 CHENEY VISIT | 9/11 INVESTIGATION 06.01.2004 12:28
FLYERS to pass out for Cheney's Portland visit -- Bush and Cheney complicity on 9/11
should be easy to print two-sided, black and white. Should make quite a statement to show any of the skeptics how evil these people are, and how we can certainly disagree on politics, though how we are all on the same side against them because they want to institute a depoliticized totalitarian police state and relegate democracy to the dumpster. Make paper airplanes and launch them out of the damnable unConstitutional 'free speech zones.' Drop them from planes, drop them from windows, get the message out that none of these internationalist corporate fascists are wanted. [ Flyers ]

HOMELESSNESS 06.01.2004 12:17
Homes for the Homeless
To follow up on the news about homeless people out in this snow, I have contacted several shelters only to find out that they are all full and doing what they can, but there are still people left to the elements in our city and outlying areas. The "news" persists in telling us that it is snowing, it might snow, it is windy, it might freeze later and asking us to "stay home". Those of us watching, are lucky to be doing just that. I still wonder why we have left so many others in the cold and do not care to mention them.

Are there any plans to open temporary shelters to help folks through this storm?

1) we need a location--Does anyone know of a warehouse with a heater and a bathroom?

2) is anyone else interested in this? I am interested in calling places to see if they will open up a place for temporary use. maybe we can get donated foam for the floor. maybe we could get some donated hot soup and coffee/tea. email me at charlac@pdx.edu if you are interested.

TACTICAL RADIO USAGE 03.01.2004 16:12
Low powered radio project comes to rural Oregon!
Cascadia Free Radio Greetings from the Prometheus Radio Project! We are planning a roadtrip across Oregon to visit some new low power stations and check out possible locations for a radio barnraising in Oregon this spring. A radio barnraising is where we gather everyone from the Oregon region who wants to learn radio skills and we all build a station from scratch over the course of a weekend. These events not only build radio stations, but build solidarity among the new groups who will be running them. The last station was built with the Coalition of Immokalee Farm Workers. [AUDIO]

We will be on the road during the last week of January, visiting low power radio applicants and community radio supporters around Oregon. We will visit as many of you as we can manage, bringing tips about equipment, fundraising, programming the licensing process and so on. We can look over your application and check your status, evaluate your station sites, and generally get your group revved up for the work ahead.

Urgent Calls Needed for Peace Activist Kate (Raphael) and..

Kimberley Anne Gray
Frederick Batzler and Gustav Fridolin International Womens Peace Service:

We suspect that deportation is imminent for the four internationals arrested yesterday in Budrus. They are still counting on international support; calls from overseas can make a difference!! Please contact the Ministry of Interior at +972 (0) 26 70 14 00 and ask to speak to Raz Godelnik, who is in charge of such matters. If he is not in (which is likely) you can speak to his secretary, Dorit, to voice your concerns. She will be in starting at noon today (5am EST [US], 10am GMT).

The four international activists that were arrested earlier today in Budrus are all facing deportation. They were originally told they would be sent to their home countries tonight but now are told they will be allowed to stay in the country for 24 hours. Katheryn Raphael and Kimberley Anne Gray (both with IWPS) have been sent to Hadera. Frederick Batzler and Gustav Fridolin are being held in Ariel. The four internationals have been charged with entering an area that was declared a closed military zone, and until now have had no proper legal representation.

The activists are counting on international support to appeal their deportation tomorrow. Please refer to the following numbers and emails to voice your support for the activists and fight the deportation orders.

Make your appeals personal, saying your relationship to the activist, and perhaps mentioning the following: Full Story, Talking Points and Phone Numbers to Call

Donations for their legal funds are welcome.

ORGANIZING 01.01.2004 15:47
Draft Proposal for a Continental Anti-Authoritarian Anti-Capitalist Network
On this tenth anniversary of the emergence of the Zapatistas from the Lacandon jungle, we call for the formation of a continental anti-authoritarian anti-capitalist network for North America. Our movements for liberation and freedom have met many challenges and our resistance continues to grow. It is now time to organize ourselves better through a de-centralized continental network of anti-capitalists.

We are everywhere, and yet we remain alienated from each other. Confined to the margins of our communities, we live our daily lives without evidence of daily resistance. We know that we are everywhere. In the margins of cyberspace, we constantly communicate. On the city's walls, we scrawl our slogans. At the barricades, we lock eyes, knowing exactly why we are there: social revolution. We want a world free from capitalism and institutional hierarchy.

We see that the class war being waged against the working class and the poor is growing ever more intense. The U.S. Empire is literally destroying the planet. The Empire has made it clear that they will use endless amounts of capital to finance war regardless of the costs to working people. Not only are these wars for Empire being waged with the lives of the working class, but the Empire is conducting blatant assaults on the working class via cuts in the social safety net, tax cuts, downsizing, outsourcing, and the corporate defrauding of workers' retirement, health care, and other benefits. The recent events in Miami showed us that the regime will pursue economic empire and neocolonialism by assaulting not just the working class and people of color in other countries, but very much also here in the U.S. using military might and violence to do so. The U.S. Empire speaks hollow words about terrorism, yet fails to act against white supremacy in our police departments, the continued use of the racist death penalty, the criminalization of drugs, institutional racism in distribution of wealth, terrorism against the homeless and people without papers, and violence against women and lesbian-gay-bi-transgendered folks. The U.S. Empire continues to build its police state complete with PATRIOT Acts, the militarization of the police in major cities, COINTELPRO programs against dissenters, constant surveillance, Orange Alert fear-mongering--all leading to greater public awareness of the true nature of the State and growing discontent with it.

We have no choice but to fight back, and by putting forward an anti-imperialist, anti-capitalist analysis and making our resistance visible, more and more people will join the struggle.

Portlander forms anti-terror, anti-almanac group, to turn in books to FBI
Portland resident Eric Berg announces the formation of Americans Against Terror and Knowledge (ATTK) in response to a Federal Bureau of Investigation bulletin issued to law enforcement agencies Dec. 24, which says terrorists, may use almanacs "to assist with target selection and pre-operational planning." Berg will start his anti-terror, anti-knowledge campaign at 10 a.m., Jan. 2, 2004 in front of local FBI offices, 1500 SW First Ave., Portland. Berg will voluntarily turn in all his almanacs to the FBI. "Last night, I was browsing through the Time Almanac 2004 with Information Please while watching South Park," Berg added. "It was the first time I had a chance to pick it up since I took it out of my stocking Christmas morning. I had no idea I was aiding al Qaeda and other terrorist groups. The thought of it makes me sick to my stomach. "I've received almanacs for Christmas for at least 20 years and I've kept all of them," Berg said. "Some friends of mine call me the Man of Knowledge. I hope the simple act of giving up my books inspires others to do the same.

Cheney Visit Jan 13 2004
On January 13th 2004 Vice pResident Dick Cheney will be in Portland to drum up support in the swing state of Oregon. This will also undoubtedly cause a strain on the city of Portland for "free speech zones" and police "protection".

This will be yet another event where people will be excluded becasue of class related issues. The invitations to this event are $1000 just to be there and $10,000 to have your picture taken with Dick, reinforcing that this government is for the people (with money).

There are grassroots organizing attempts being made to disrupt this visit. It is still unclear where Cheney will be or what time he will be arriving. If you would like to help cover this event with Indymedia please contact us to get involved!

ANTI-WAR 23.12.2003 13:30
Save the Date - March 20, 2004: The World Still Says No to War
Momentum is building across the globe for the Global Day of Action against War and Occupation on March 20, the one-year anniversary of the U.S. bombing and invasion of Iraq.

On that day millions around the globe will take to the streets to say YES to peace and NO to pre-emptive war and occupation. Joining with growing numbers of military families and soldiers, we will call for an end to the occupation of Iraq and Bush's militaristic foreign policies. March 20th will be the first time the world's "other superpower," as the New York Times described us, will take center stage since February 15th, when more than ten million people across the globe expressed their opposition to Bush's looming war on Iraq.

The US protests will also take on the war at home. We will express the growing opposition to the so-called PATRIOT Act, authorizing political arrests, indefinite detentions, domestic spying, and religious and racial profiling. We will call for an end to the mass detentions and deportations of innocent immigrants in the name of fighting terrorism. We will say no to massive military spending amidst vast cuts in vital domestic social and economic programs.
