Radical Childcare Collective Forming - Learn more and join!
We're a small, as-of-yet unnamed collective dedicated to providing free childcare at radical community events in Portland. We haven't started up yet - we just formed two weeks ago, and are still in the very early planning stages.

We're hosting an info meeting for prospective volunteers at the Red and Black Cafe this upcoming Friday, February 13, at 5pm. This will be a laid back, informal opportunity for us to meet, exchange ideas, and start forming a more cohesive collective. The Red and Black Cafe is located at 400 SE 12th.

Here's what we want to do, in a nutshell:

Sat Jan 31 -Town Hall on the Economic Crisis
You are invited to a Town Hall on the Economic Crisis

First Unitarian Church, SW 12th and Main
Saturday, January 31, 1-5 pm

While almost $2.5 trillion of our money was squandered on easy term loans to banks and investment houses, we lost 2.6 million jobs in 2008! One million jobs were lost just between Nov. 1st and Dec. 31st of 2008. With a good deal more suffering likely, we are in the most difficult economic times since the Great Depression.

* What are the root causes of the economic crisis?
* What should we fight for? What is a "recovery?"
* How do the millions of people who voted for change help make it happen?

Donations welcome -- Sponsored by Jobs with Justice, the Economic Justice Action Group of the First Unitarian Church, and over 45 unions, community organizations, churches, and other groups.

Community Acupuncture Network Votes "No" on New Doctorate Degree for Acupuncture
Portland, Oregon, January 11th- The board of directors for the Community Acupuncture Network (CAN) has voted unanimously to oppose a new doctorate degree for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine on the grounds that such a move would be detrimental to practitioners, patients and the profession. Due to its large membership, the vote represents a significant hurdle for professional consensus for the ACAOM to renew its review and finalization of standards for a first-professional doctorate in acupuncture and in Oriental medicine.

Support Publicly Financed Elections
The city Auditor is resigning in May. This position is a powerful position that is in charge of auditing (or ignoring) city projects and runs the Independent Police Review. The powers that be want a special election held that is in 4 months. This is bad as most people who can qualify for auditor will be busy doing Taxes and not able to run. Also, this is not enough time for people to qualify for Public Financing. Which leaves an auditor who is elected by the PDC, business and the Portland Police Union. If you can please attend the following meeting and support Portland Publicly Financed Elections by asking that the election happen in September (this will give time for good progressive people to run for this office).

Bergin Arraignment TODAY at 1:30
According to Judge Mauer's staff, Bergin's arraignment is scheduled for TUESDAY, January 6th, at 1:30pm. As always, you are advised to call the courthouse in the morning, to confirm the date and time, and these are subject to change (as most of you know).

Notorious murder-cop William Bergin is to be arraigned (again) at the Clackamas County Courthouse in Oregon City tomorrow. As you will likely recall, Bergin and his accomplice Deputy Dave Willard gunned down an unarmed, injured accident victim because they were scared that he might get blood on them. He's not being arraigned for that, alas, but he is being arraigned for official misconduct, theft, and whatever else. It might be fun to be there.... If you would like to interview Mr. Bergin for a story, you should have reporters stationed outside each exit. You should come early, and be willing to stay late. Because last time, Bergin sneaked into the courthouse early, through the back door, to avoid having to face the public. After the arraignment was interrupted by lawyers for the man he murdered, who were there to ask that Bergin's lawyer recuse himself due to a conflict of interest, Bergin literally ran out the back door and fled from anyone who might want real justice, or who might have any tricky questions for him.

And let this be a lesson to Mr. Bergin and all cops who would kill people just for fun: The system might let you off every time, but you will have to live with your conscience, your fear, your own knowledge, and the judgment of the public for the rest of your life.

In any event, it promises to be some fun. See you there.
