American Values: Torture's Okay, But No Touching
There's a great outcry over the Catholic church's coverup of priestly perversions, but it's hard to find too many Americans getting worked up over the much more ghastly coverup of an official policy of torture and murder of prisoners by the US government. ---------------------------------------

The tale of a horse
Central Oregon : Home of the Cowboy, a slice of the old west, where wild mustangs run free and ranchers quietly maintain their livestock. So why then is it a haven for animal abuse and neglect? Why are hundreds of animals found starving and sick every year? Why can't anyone really do anything to make it better? Local vets accuse animal control officers of harrasment when they try and help,.. neighbors close their eyes to the skinny dogs running the street and the animal rescues in the area are far to few to even make a dent.

The Danger of the Christian Fascists and the Challenges This Poses

When we talk about the dangers posed by the Christian Fascists and the configuration in ruling structures of U.S. society now, some people say, "Are you people just trying to scare people into scurrying to your banner?" Well, no. This is very real. And one of the things that was very important in the discussion that followed the talk I gave on the dictatorship of the proletariat (" Dictatorship and Democracy, and the Socialist Transition to Communism"), was the question about whether there's "a perfect fit" between this Christian Fascist program and the interests and needs of the ruling class, at this time at least. (This discussion was published in the RW #1261, December 12, 2004.)

Quito, Ecuador: an example for the world (but especially for the US)
The basis for referents and teachers about democracy has shifted, specially during the last five years - the US is no longer an adequate teacher to the rest of the world about anything related to democracy. We must look for emerging examples around the world to lead humanity into this fairly novel idea of "democracy". The people of Quito, Ecuador have given that example during the last 10 days. Our collective hats off to them and a sincere thanks for a timely lesson in democracy as it should be when confronted with absolute corruption and fascism.

A short history of the Popes named Benedict
I was curious as to the symbolic meaning of the term Benedict, and the following is the result of my research. It would appear that the meaning of 'Benedict' is further consolidation and centralization of power in the office of the Papacy, a continuation of the right wing extremism and authoritarianism characteristic of the previous Pope, and perhaps even an implied threat against any more Priests out there who might be involved in sexual scandals

There is no evidence available to us that the accusations levelled against unknown Israelis by Walter Storch of The Barnes Review are true. There are no SEC press releases, nor are there any mentions of the SEC naming unknown Israeli traders in the three sources suggested by Walter Storch. Therefore we can safely conclude that the Israeli money trail is nothing but an urban myth that has planted itself in cyberspace.

Progressive Democrat 18.04.2005 21:20
Can Progressives be mutually inclusive?
Both many Greens and many progressive Democrats, and probably many others, are discouraged and disgusted about in-fighting along party lines. Sure, Greens are building an alternative party, and that is good, but that shouldn't mean that Greens can't vote for progressive Democrats for office or that progressive Democrats can't vote for Greens.

Then there's ugly stuff like when some Democrats acted unethically to sabotage the convention that was to have gotten Nader on the ballot in Oregon in 2004. That left ALL progressives dismayed and disgusted. Now, when some big labor Democrats reportedly suggested to Nader in 2000 that maybe Nader could tell people, just in Florida, not all over the country, to go ahead and vote for the Democrat -- just the one time -- that was okay, as far as I'm concerned, that they suggested it. What's wrong is if Democrats blame Nader because he didn't do that and then Democrats nurse a grudge over it.

Because, SCREW THE PAST -- we have the future to take care of.

Jesse Jackson, Jr., has called for progressive Democrats to reach out to include progressives outside the Democratic Party. For example, according to CommonDreams (from back in 2000) --

"Jackson has emerged as the leading Democratic advocate for opening the fall presidential debates to make room for Green Party candidate Ralph Nader--introducing a House resolution that urges the Commission on Presidential Debates to include Nader and any other candidate whose participation is supported by a majority of voters polled."

Recently, I've been discussing with friends the prospects for Life After Cheap Petroleum. Darlene Hooley and the Greens
In the last election a Green candidate made a deal with Hooley and then dropped out. The Greens will not challenge a Democrat if they think it could cost the Democrat the election. They will only run candidates against Democrats who have safe seats, like Ron Wyden.

The only way the left can have any electoral impact is to run against Democrats in close elections and try to make them lose.

Are Dems behind Greens' problems?
This is a charge frequently levelled here at PIMC -- that the Democratic Party is all about limiting ballot access and perpetuating the two-party system. Supposedly that's all that myself, or Peter DeFazio or Earl Blumenauer really care about. That is the kind of loose talk, inflammatory talk and BULLSHIT that I am tired of getting -- so let's look at the REALITIES.

I respectfully suggest that it's high time that we look at the record to see whether, in fact, the Democratic Party can be said to be the cause of the Green Party's problems in reaching ballot access in Oregon or nationally. Typical of the charges brought (without evidence of any kind) against ALL Democrats (including progressive Democrats!) are accusations made in a comment by "StevetheGreen" following my article suggesting that the Greens would do well to put up a viable candidate against Darlene Hooley for her seat in Congress --

These were the exact same conditions that reigned when the killer-retard-president launched 9/11. The problem is that now we will not have the world rooting for us but celebrating our death and demise, so the attack may have to be a bit bigger than before. Chenney, Gonzalez and Rumsfeld will probably push the nuclear option and coordinate with the media to ensure that the enemies they create this time are also internal as much as external.

he lets his image carry his spirit John was a mainline leader/activist in the American Indian Movement in the 1970s. In 1979,his family, including 3 young daughters, were murdered. He was given access to the world of famous musicians and allowed to go *in and out of craziness* while he greived and began to write. His deep inner-seeking brings out gems by the dozen. The State works overtime to suppress his insights so that you never even hear of him, much less his depths. He's a traditional-oriented American Indian who is part of a broader resistance against the colonization of both peoples and *their minds* (not only indians!). Everyone should realize the value of hearing him out and passing the word on!
