"Hearthcheck" zine, by political prisoners Jeffrey "Free" Luers and Rob "los ricos" Thaxton (both currently serving time in Salem, Oregon), is an exceptional booklet of information... Written in concise language, lacking pretense, this zine made me feel I am not alone in my beliefs...Luers' statement, "Maybe you'll wait until you have to kill for water" sums it up nicely.

What's in a Memorial?
At Oregon State University, there is currently a proposal to erect a memorial on campus to student soldiers from OSU. The proposal is currently pushing its way through the OSU bureaucracy with a minimum of fuss. This column, published in the OSU Daily Barometer on Friday, May 13th, argues that war memorials mean vastly different things to different people, something that's missing from the current debate.

Jobless America: Outsourcing Prosperity!
Stanley Aronowitz How can there be a so-called "economic recovery" without the creation of new jobs? Well, thanks to author, activist and social critic, Stanley Aronowitz, we now know the scheming Plutocrats have been able to "delink" the two. Speaking in Baltimore, MD, at Red Emma's Coffeehouse, he detailed some of the means used to deprived workers in this country of their jobs. Outsourcing, of course, is only one of those Labor-bashing tactics.

Nuclear weapons and humans cannot coexist: A Japanese survivor speaks out
When 60 years ago the United States became the first (and since then the only) country to use atomic weapons by dropping them on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan, hundreds of thousands of people were killed. Those at the hypercenter, or ground zero, were the "lucky" ones — they were instantly vaporized. Others died, but not instantly, living their last moments in pain and misery. Their flesh melting off, many perished while looking for water to ease their suffering.

Quoite:

It should be clear that the actual population of the United States has already overshot its carrying capacity as measured by the energy-producing capability of visible American acreage. To achieve genuine self-sufficiency in energy depending on visible acreage only, the population of America would have had to level off no later than 1880 at 50 million people.

On the Brink of 'Theocracy'
Progressives who think warnings about "theocracy" are an exaggeration should take a closer look at "Justice Sunday: Filibustering People of Faith," the Christian Right telethon headlined by Senate Majority Leader William Frist. Envision the carefully designed image that the far-right Family Research Council, the main organizer of the April 24 event, beamed into conservative churches across the country: a political rally from a large, comfortable mega-church in Louisville, with a middle-class audience listening with rapt attention to political operatives who self-identify as religious leaders-and at the bottom of the screen, streaming video with the photos, names and phone numbers of targeted U.S. senators. The visual message was clear: the church is dominant over the state and senators should toe the line on eliminating the filibuster and confirming Bush judges or pay the price.

Peak Oil is a Scam or a Hoax (and it has /nothing/ to do with biotic vs. abiotic oil)
It is very fashionable for radicals to jump on the "Peak Oil" bandwagon these days, but it's time to pull that wagon off the side of the road. "Peak Oil" is a hoax that is being perpetrated by the fossil fuel industry and blindly parroted by many on the left. Fortunately, I can prove that it is a lot of hot air, smoke, and mirrors by deductive reasoning and a few, simple facts. (Deductive reasoning involves presenting a hypothesis first, and checking to see if it fits the available evidence. Similarly, it involves debunking an accepted theory if it doesn't fit all of the available facts).

Washington county plans new tax break giveaway to Intel
The U.S. has a chronic shortage of jobs. Governments at all levels are using this as an excuse to give tax credits to big business. The result is a loss of tax revenue to support public services. We are throwing people out of the lifeboats. Another result is a shift in the tax burden from corporations to the rest of us. And from what I've read, the tax credits do NOT produce jobs. We need to demand that our elected officials stop playing this game.

What will the new depression be like?
Well kids, this looks like it might be it... Car culture is on the skids. GM & Ford look like they might be going under and they'll probably drag much of the rest of the world economy down with them. The word "depression" has started to get some serious use in the mainstream media in the last few hours (a few hours too late) and it would probably happen even if they weren't allowed to use the word. So what's it, the depression, going to be like? Will another world war drag us out of it? That seems unlikely (seeing as how another world war would probably be uneconomical) but if it's not, what will another world war be like? Oh, the fortune cookie cursed us for we do indeed live in interesting times!
