Screwing Future Retirees...Again
Having failed to kill off Social Security with private accounts, conservatives in Congress are now trying to render it useless by raising the retirement age further?this time to 69. That may be okay for a Wall Street lawyer who runs half-marathons and spends two hours in the gym, but for the average American worker bee, employers have by that point pretty much ruined her or his health and body. Some "reform." --------------

Bush neocons to INVADE UNITED NATIONS, take it over to make Fourth Reich?
Here's something that really floored me. Lots of commentary below. The neocons want the IMF and the World Bank to be formally in on international war planning policy, within the U.N.

Plus, anything domestically that occurs WITHIN any country globally, Bush wants to be considered an "international" cause not for U.N. dialogue or talks, but for repressive war led by the U.N. in defense of transnational corporate interests whenever they are threatened "internally."

Zombies are hypothetical creatures of the sort that philosophers have been known to cherish. A zombie is physically identical to a normal human being, but completely lacks conscious experience. Zombies look and behave like the conscious beings that we know and love, but "all is dark inside." There is nothing it is like to be a zombie.

Inefficient Intimacy
In May of 2005, a small group of committed radical feminist activists, myself included, began a campaign against Cafe Press for selling products promoting rape and glamorizing violence against women. Our success was mixed. Over 100 sexist products were removed almost immediately after the call to action went out (thanks if you wrote, emailed or called!), but more than 200 "donkey punch" items are still listed at Cafe Press.

Direct action feels satisfying enough, but when you can see the ripples of your movement towards equality further away than you suspected they would travel, it feels sublime. Reading blogger Rob Horning's article today was the most exciting thing that has happened to this feminist on a Tuesday since Buffy ended.

What John Conyers is doing as minority chair of the House Judiciary Committee is probably without precedent. When the American people, led by workers and anarchists, demanded the 8-hour day in 1886 -- leading to a general strike and finally to the bloody repression of the Hay Market massacre -- that demand for the 8-hour day is the outstanding example of what a transitional demand is! That movement, for nothing more than a transitional demand, continues to live on every May Day around the world, wherever workers' class consciousness lives and breathes.

May There Be Justice
Pray to whomever you want, or simply hope, that the gigantic lie that is 9-11, that is the "war" "on" "terrorism", that is Iraq, will crumble from within. If deceit and lies of this magnitude, on this deadly a scale can wreak their havoc without having to face justice, if our leaders can sit there and lie to our faces with the evil smirk of impugnity, if the corporate press will do all it can to perpetuate and defend the lies while ignoring and attacking the truth, if we as citizens meekly sit there and let them, while our children die in iraq or come home physically and mentally maimed because in our infinite weakness we thought we had no choice in the matter, then there really is no point to the nation called America, none at all, except to be a useless, warmongering blight.

That's what my anarchist friend just told me. Here's why: we are calling for the impeachment of Bush even though we know that the U.S. congress is totally run by the Republicans -- except for a tiny bit of power still claimed by the Democrats on the House Judiciary Committee and by the filibuster Democrats in the Senate. Sure, you could say that if an honest election could be held today, the American people would toss Dubya out on his ear. But a congressional minority ain't going to impeach the president! So what does that add up to?

Myth's of Activism
For those who regularly attend the downtown peace marches- the ones beginning to resemble funeral processions- one thing is becoming clear: they don't work. Even the most ardent supporters of the 'peace movement' are becoming disillusioned with the realities they are facing, mainly the lack of progress. This is surprising to many; before the most recent Iraq war began, thousands in downtown Portland, and millions across the globe, joined together to voice their opposition to an illegal war- and nothing happened. Now the reality is setting in: the people came together, did what they were supposed to do, and were ignored by the hand that feeds them. How did this happen?
We were all taught that a M.L.K or Gandhi approach to activism was the most effective and least violent way to create change. It is time we reevaluate this perspective. First off, we must question why it is that these two in particular are taught to us in the schools, media, movies, and supported by the government as examples for us to follow. Were the techniques used by M.L.K and Gandhi really effective? And if so, how much change actually occurred?

How can we make cycling more sustainable?
on my way to bed tonight, i am thinking about a longer-than-usual bike ride i'll be taking in the morning for a visit to a naturopathic doctor. i find myself grateful that the longer ride does not entail, like a car trip would, concerns about whether there's enough gas in the tank. i'll check the tire pressure before i go, and see if the chains need lube, but that's about it. however, the thought occurs to me now, as it sometimes does, that bicycling instead of driving has still not freed me from consuming petroleum and that a future with much less of it that's more expensive will definitely affect me and other cyclists. how can we make this better?

SENATOR Robert Bennett really Deep Throat, Wash Post attempts to disguise CIA/banker coup
If we count the Kennedy Assasination, the impeachment of Richard Nixon was the second coup d'etat by the central bankers in a dozen years.

Jim Hougan, co-author "Silent Coup: The Removal of a President "(1992) believes Felt was badgered into playing this role by family and friends. According to Houghton, Felt wrote a book about his career in the FBI. In it, he goes out of the way to say that he met Woodward on a single occasion. This was in Felt's FBI office, and the upshot of it was that Felt told Woodward that he would not cooperate with him in his pursuit of "Watergate." Houghton says no one in or around the Nixon White House was in a position to know all of the things that Throat is alleged to have told Woodward. For example, Felt had no way of knowing about the 18-and-a-half minute gap in Rosemary Woods' tape. This strongly suggests that Throat was a composite. "What we have here, then, is the sad spectacle of an old man being manipulated," says Houghton. "The only person who meets [the Deep Throat] criterion, to my knowledge, is Robert Bennett. Now one of the most powerful men in the U.S. Senate, Bennett was President of the Robert R. Mullen Company in 1972-3. This was the CIA front for which Howard Hunt worked." Houghton obtained a memo under the Freedom of Information Act in which Bennett admits he is briefing Bob Woodward. "Woodward's gratefulness was manifest in the way he kept the CIA, in general, and the Robert R. Mullen Company, in particular, out of his stories."
