What happens when a reporter or writer 'makes up' facts? In recent years, respect for corporate media has plummeted, in part because of revelations that reporters have falsified parts or the entire body of articles.
This has happened at the New Republic, the New York Times, USA Today and others. In several cases, the reporters in question were fired. As well, apologies to the readers appeared, along with steps to prevent recurrences.
What happens when fiction appears as fact at Portland Indymedia?
In the first five minutes of his show about Enron, he mentioned the BILLIONS (38 to be close) that Enron stole from California alone. Ten minutes later he referred to Enron as the "Bankrupt Energy Giant".
Found this great essay at Manuel Valenzuela's new blog which contains every damn essay he's ever written. This guy is prolific, and very, very good. Pay the blog a visit, click through the archives, read a couple of articles. Good for the soul. This essay speaks to the lunacy of nations as entities, of divisions of peoples, and of human future.
if the moral nation can't be no. 1 in health care, why not a leader in incarceration. can you see a problem here?
I just wrote this op-ed to coincide with the so-called "disengagement" from the Gaza Strip by Israel. I am a Portlander who has been to Palestine several times, and am fed up with the media coverage of the issue in this country. I hope this article will give you a little more insight into this issue than CNN or the corporate news has been doing in their cheerleading for Israel this week.
Some thoughts that crossed my mind after hearing Cindy Sheehan speak
"Victory means exit strategy, and it's important for the President to explain to us what the exit strategy is."
- Was said by....?
Or how about:
"You can support the troops but not the president." -By...?
Frank Rich of the New York Times is one of a handful of columnists for the major daily newspapers in the United States who exhibit intelligence and compassion. He makes no secret of his loathing for the war in Iraq—a sentiment entirely to his credit and rare in the media. And he recognizes that the Bush administration, with its combination of criminality and recklessness, represents something qualitatively new and troubling in American political life.
I've had many reasons to dislike the Portland police bureau and its minions in blue (and black) in recent years. I've watched unbelievable atrocities committed by portland police officers against unarmed demonstrators, for example, and have reeled at stories of officers gunning down unarmed motorists and people in mental hospitals. They even pepper sprayed babies. So it's with a pleasant sense of surprise that I offer the following anecdote.
how to remain engaged in activism
The free press has made great efforts to keep us ignorant of our governments behaviour.
in a world of increasing conflict and violent war, of famine, poverty, and reaction- the articles on this website that are continually discussed are: animals, bike helmets, and talking about indy-media. This is concerning. Events are speeding up on a world scale, another war is on the horizon, and still with the animals and bike helmets. Should we not make some kind of priority in our activism?
It was bad enough when publishers and editors demanded that stories exhibit a straght-jacket balance that gave equal weight to lying with truthtelling. Now editors are going for a news "mix" that balances the politics of various stories in the days news "package." -----------
Cindy Sheehan's gallant anti-War vigil outside of the ranch of our half-demented President, George W. Bush, Jr., in Crawford Texas, is drawing massive support from around the country. It is also attracting pro-war snakes, like that former "Nation" magazine ranter, Christopher Hitchens. A Brit, who comes across as an insufferable Tory, he accused Sheehan of trying to "ventriloquize the dead" and of spouting off "sinister piffle."
Stick a fork in their asses, turn them over, they're done.
Dilawar of Yakubi died by crucifixion.
Printed Sunday in the Register-Guard.
Just her by herself, waiting out the heat, all alone in the prairie, waiting for her President—with little George holed up in his phony ranch-compound. That was an image that might have changed minds.
Ms. Sheehan's natural, sincere look and earthy appearance on television do not betray the semiprofessional operation running the show at Camp Casey: organizers from Code Pink, a women's peace organization, and a public relations expert from Fenton Communications........
The only reason people in Africa are starving is because Africans do not control the vast majority of traditional prime and irrigated farmland as they once did before the white barbarian came and took control of that land for the very purpose of exporting food back to Europe and America
And a protest as well as a warning
The Columbia River is very quickly being given away to transnatioanl corporations, and there's a little peep from the peops. Many feel hopeless, withdraw from the slimey carpetbaggers, embark on "Internal migration". Still, the powers-that-be get threatened when we show up at every meeting with increasingly creative props. They show fear when we refuse to leave.

Why the PPRC and other passivist groups are furthering the disillusionment of movements for social justice.
Finally, bush can explain why we went to war. Now it all makes sense.
it has been 6 years since the martyredome of anthony james dawson and
the silence remains by all who thought they once meant something to

We often witness the irony of self fulfilling prophecy and the strange karmic, 'what goes around comes around' sort of cosmic justice. To the chagrin of dreamers, dreams sometimes do come true.
Please stop, George.
Friday Rally stops by my workplace.
Neo-Nazi and White Power groups in Canada, the US and elsewhere have been using Nationstates.net, an online gaming site based on Australian author Max Barry's novel, Jennifer Government, to recruit new members through free and apparently unmoderated message boards. Let him know what's up with supporting hate groups by letting them use his site!
Recently, ceremonies of "Remembrance" were held for the victims of the U.S.' A-bombings of Japan. No mention, however, was made of the fascist Japanese War Lords, like Hideki Tojo, who had launched wars of aggression against Asian/Pacific states, beginning in 1931, and with the U.S., in 1941. Tojo's granddaughter recently said, "Japan didn't fight wars of aggression." Ignoring the evils of the War Lords plays into the hands of the Revisionists.

People live in their vehicles for a variety of reasons. American cities are passing laws which are essentially criminalizing both poverty and homelessness. Rubber Tramps shows both the romantic and difficult aspects of living on the road and is explained thoughout by the commentary provided by author Ken Kesey. This film review by Alan Ruskin originally appeared on Earthblog.net and is reposted with permission. The original article by can be seen at; www.earthblog.net/rubber1.html

Oregon secession, time to take action!
Many people desire change. Many people know just exactly what end result they would like to accomplish. But they have no concrete method that will work. I offer a different perspective, and some true methods.
By invading countries unilaterally, and by threatening countries without nukes while negotiating with, or even having friendly relations with those that have them, the Bush administration is courting nuclear disaster. -------------
This is the story of frothy bubbles; chapter two in a book I'm writing titled Common Joe's Economical Laws, or maybe Sustainable Frothability. If I live through our nation's brewing property bubble massacre, a big "if" for this lifetime tenant of landlord-managed fiefdoms, I might even send you guys chapter three. The same thing goes for Joe's proposed "Laws of Rent," the topic of this chapter, as went for Joe's Laws of Mortgage posted before: None of these are laws at all, obviously, because one Common Joe has no power to enact any of'em - feedback and exchange is the name of this game, for now anyway.
Portland is fortunate to have KBOO, but since the rise of KPOJ, "Air America Radio," our community radio station is starting to show its weaknesses. I still support the station, politically and financially, but it's getting easier and easier to tune over to KPOJ, and KBOO doesn't seem to get it.
Is the scourge that is revealing it self everso more obviously going to go away or get any better? Doesn't it make itself clear that each person that becomes addicted to this trashy, poisonous substance- will in turn share it with another person therefore expanding the problem exponentially?
The signs are clear and they repeat themselves over and over in the media throughout the country. Is there any point in trying to rehab any of these zombies- because they will forever lead a life scarred by the brain damage and the jones- correct?
I for one am sick of the fast talking, faux friendlyness they show while scanning your replies (or your area) for chance to take advantage of you. As if I didn't notice you face full of scabs and lack of oral hygiene (or teeth).

When the 2005 Legislature adjourned Sine Die, they left behind countless Oregonians screaming for relief from the high cost of health care. Billed early on as the number one priority of the session, health care bills languished in the Republican-controlled House through the final hours of the 2005 session.

As evil as Karl Rove is, his immorality can not distract us from the immmensely greater immorality of these imperialist wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. These wars are now proven by documentation to be wars of naked aggression against innocent people and the same principles as those at Nuremberg should apply.
Harry Agro, a US Navy Seaman, was a WWII POW of the Japanese for nearly three years. He survived a horrific ordeal on the island of Hokkaido, where he was beaten every day and forced to work on coal ships. The Japanese swore the war would last 100 years! On August 6, 1945, the U.S. dropped an A-bomb on Hiroshima and three days later, one on Nagasaki. Those decisions remains highly controversial. Japan sued for peace on Aug. 14, 1945.
A-Bombs then, Shock & Awe and DU now. So who is the real terrorist in the world today? Some guy with a satchel bomb, or the nation that unloads its arsenal of death on innocent civilians by the tens of thousands? -------
US Immigration Says not enough proof of marriage after seven month silence. Kids are not enough.
It's hard to belive that it's the 60th aniversery of the destruction of Hiroshima.
It has been said, 'is this a prophet? What are these strange words? How is it that he is not like an old time prophet? Given my principle of always speaking to people in their own language, by popular demand, I will therefore speak to them in the language of an Old Time Prophet of theirs, to keep them happy.
This is the story of frothy bubbles; the first chapter in a book I'm writing titled Common Joe's Economical Laws, or maybe Sustainable Frothability, I haven't decided yet. If I live through our nation's brewing property bubble massacre, I might even send you guys chapter two. Our story gets going blowin' bubbles of debt straight up from the top. No tiny Don Ho bubbles - no - just massive, grotesque, inflated zits of monetary pestilence, encompasing all of the nation's property and wealth. With nary a sneeze, the property bubble blows livelihoods and adjustable-rate bills all over the nation's streets....

Believe it or not, it's perfectly legal for police to rummage through your garbage for incriminating stuff on you -- even if they don't have a warrant or court approval.
new charges filed in Pentagon Leaks...when will people become outraged by all of this treason that is destroying the United States!
Standing as Jews in the Fight for Racial Justice
It was not necessary to drop atomic bombs. That is a 60 year old lie--we did it to prevent millions of American casualties--LIES for more than half a century.
The spinners and the bullshitters have presented us with a very narrow box to fit inside. But through acting and thinking outside that box, we can liberate ourselves.
Lyndon LaRouche is a neo-fascist. Allowing his articles or articles by his organizations to run on this website is a mockery of what independent media began as.
