Federal building security told PPRC we couldn't stand on the sidewalk in front of the building, saying it's federal property
"There is nothing happening. And they're feeding the public a line of bull and they're spinning, and people are dying down here."
- Ray Nagin, Mayor of New Orleans, Sept.2, 2005
Forget the isolated looters. The real villains of the New Orleans tragedy are the oil executives who have chosen this opportunity to gouge us all and put the nation's economy at risk in order to rake in the bucks while the getting's good.
We are people conditioned into cattle-like herds, set to smash into each other for interests that are not truly ours. Formalized individuals, who have largely subordinated their individuality to dark age institutional designs and ideas, do the herding, while orders from on high are followed like any platoon of soldiers. The pattern continues unabated. How deeply your commitment to peace is, proves crucial for truly ending war--in the heart!
Refugees? Try victims. Register these people to vote now!
Nearly 100 years ago, V.I. Lenin explained that under capitalism, life for the vast majority of humanity is "horror without end". Misery, degradation, squalor, hunger, lack of clean water, electricity, and housing - let alone access to jobs, health care, and education - is the wretched fate of literally billions of people on this planet. Until recently for most Americans, this grim reality existed only in places "far, far away, about which we know very little" - and in the American inner cities where the media's cameras never shine.
stop the tsunamai bull shit!!!
Trapped in New Orleans
I was seriously hoping that I would not have to write this article. But it has been too long now, and I have to say something. Regardless of whether the deaths en masse of poor black folks in New Orleans is due to neglect or maliciousness, the end result is constructively a genocide on poor blacks in America, right now, in 2005. The lack of aid to New Orleans at this late hour (7 pm, Sept. 1) is not explicable. I have only one explanation that I can muster up. And that explanation is classism and racism.
Why is Bush always in the air, looking down, when people are suffering on the ground?
if this is how FEMA / Homeland Security / whatever is supposed to "prepare" for or "effectively respond" to a ****natural**** disaster -
Notes on Looting and Looters: Some Perspectives
In the midst of all of this pain and misery, the media and the authorities have decided that the central story now is the looting and "lawlessness" that are taking place around the city.
The total abandonment of these people may not be registering too much with the average indymedia liberal, but it is not going to be escaping the attention of American workers, especially black workers.
This is threshold that we can use to revivalize and renew the culture of resistance and alternatives.
Some observations are made about the relevance of US crony capitalism and the breakdown of community and social solidarity in hypercapitalist postmodern America, and the recent devastation sparked by Hurricane Katrina on the Louisiana and Gulf coasts.
Real fuel conservation is needed to avoid shortages affecting rescue efforts!
... Or have a natural disaster fester into civil conflict and race wars!
Christopher Hitchens, the scourge of the late Mother Teresa of Calcutta, is at it again! The ex-Lefty has written a rant defending the indefensible - the Iraqi War! His main point: Saddam Hussein was a thug, so therefore the Iraqi war was justified. The Straussian Neocon, however, got it wrong! Under International Law, regime change isn't a legal cause for a war. This is why Bush and his poodle, Blair, had to "fix" the intelligence around the policy.
There seems to be an MO for how this White House handles urban crises: let the place descend into chaos and anarchy and only then go in. Could there be method to this madness?
Craigslist is being used by people all over the US to offer help to refugees of Hurricane Katrina. Maybe you can offer help too. Check it out!
(Great article from when the tsunami hit but quite relevant today. Just replace the word hurricane for tsunami)
The view Bush had if he really did look.
Eat shit, Bill!
Stories from times spent in and around New Orleans with a science twist.
If Bush hadn't sent everyone off to war and blown the budget on the military, there'd have been stronger dykes in New Orleans and more troops and equipment to help with the rescue effort.
The great lie that is the war on terrorism has just taken a very serious blow. A category 5 hurricane named Katrina.
How cars are used in Amsterdam
Hurricane "Katrina" hit the central Gulf Coast on Aug. 29, 2005, causing devastation. When the Army Corps of Engineers had asked for additional funding to protect the New Orleans region from flooding, the Bush-Cheney Gang said, "No!" Meanwhile, the Neocon-inspired Iraqi War continues to waste hundreds of billions of dollars of our nation's resources. Isn't it time for the American people to wake-up and take action to restore the Republic?
Some observations about the disastrous storm.
Not like more evidence is needed as to how racist, sexist, classist, and sexualist the corporate media is, but these AP, Reuters, and AFP photos attribute "looting" flooded grocery stores to non-white people, while white people miraculously "find" whole lots of cool stuff at flooded grocery stores. Go figure.
The great lie that is the war on terrorism has just taken a very serious blow. A category 5 hurricane named Katrina.
Some comments on recent events in New Orleans from an anarchist perspective.
I heard on the radio last night where the people of Venezuela are buying gas at $.12 per gallon.
Those left behind fend for themselves
Fuck the GAP! Fuck the fat-ass tourists! Finally some of that $$ going to local people who can use it.
"I BELIEVE the government has just successfully proved that any seaman recruit has reasonable cause to believe that the wars in Yugoslavia, Afghanistan, and Iraq were illegal." This statement, which could easily be mistaken for an indymedia editorial, sprang from the lips of Lt. Commander Robert Klant, the military judge presiding over the recent court-martial of GI resister Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Pablo Paredes.
This feature is a musing about the wisdom of signing one's real name to a feature or a comment.
One author's introduction to the philosophy of anarchism.
Daddy, why did we have to attack Iraq?
the military industrial complex and the warmongering machine
the neocon "war party" has had its fifteen minutes of fame on the world stage and is rapidly imploding as the pendulum begins to swing back. the full harsh reality of the war party's disastrous imperialist policies are now coming into full view. their policies are the shark, and we who believe another world is possible are the octopus...

Here is a president who purposefully, if blindly, took his nation to war, brandishing with equal mastery ignorance and incompetence
Stop forcing division on us Iraqis
It was a fake documentary about an oil crisis in late 2005-2006. Essentially, several factors led to a worldwide spike in oil prices, leaving gasoline at up to $8.00 per gallon and Oil at $200 per barrel.
The story goes like this:
Fall 2005: a category 1 hurricane hits the oil refineries of Louisiana, crippling America's refinery capacity. Gas hits $4.00 per gallon...
prob'ly won't work long...
Oil is now over $70 per barrel and rising. So how does this screw Venezuela?
I read in the commentary section of The Oregonian on the 21st of August, an article on the consumption of fossil fuels on our planet. The general gist of the piece was one of overshop optimism of how we, as a culture, will deal with this potentially "horrible" situation.
Hundreds, maybe thousands of the poor, elderly, and children are standing in the hot, humid New Orleans sun for many blocks long waiting to get into the Superdome. The reason makes me angry.
Our mother died April 15, 2002 in Salem, Oregon. She spent 19 days at our local nursing home being starved to her death. I took her out during a 3 hour fight on April 10, 2002. Mother was admitted from the Salem Hospital to this facility on March 21, 2002. She was at Salem Hospital 2 times after arriving in Salem on Feb. 11, 2002. She had pneumonia but her local hospital would not admit her in Springfield, Oregon and that is why we rescued Loveda Powell.
Emperor George II and Lord Blair are planning to
sacrifice more Sheeple, like they did with the
terrorist attacks they perpetrated upon their

Of course, we can certainly expect more attacks

If you look around everything sorta looks the same. But if you look a little closer you'll recognize something amiss. We're not in Kansas anymore Toto.
we are now checkmated by the oil crash, a disaster wholly of our own making, since we refused to prepare for it, knowing it was coming for the past fifty years. society must now pay for its sins of greed, arrogance, overconsumption, carelessness, waste, and stupidity. we can frantically try to smash our opponent's chess pieces (i.e. steal their oil) in a fruitless attempt to alter the outcome, as our govt appears to be doing, or we can surrender gracefully and make the best of it, recognizing that the real opponent is inside ourselves - our feelings of powerlessness, our lethargic accceptance of the status quo, our inability to see new options. overcome these, and a new age will be born amid the ruins.
From the Israeli Left
Capitalism is organized crime and we are living in an usury-market economy, not a free-market economy. It is by design that the rich get richer and the poor get poorer, not by accident. Time to boycott the Daily Show until they get more progressive guests to balance the right wing rhetoric of the neocons.
