Freedom from Hierarchies
We progressives have the advantage at this point in our history.

The national ideology and trends are in our favor. We can see hierarchies while conservatives stay isolated at the top and are therefore clueless. We can examine our own unintentional support of hierarchies and then create alternatives that build equality.

Environmentalist Witch Hunt 2005
This week approx. 6 people were arrested in connection with alleged arsons and environmental activism (resulting in property damage) in the Pacific NW. I have said we needed to "support" them, and people have written me asking why I am asking people support "terrorists." The people who are charged with these crimes, themselves, do not call themselves, or identify as, "eco-terrorists." I can start my reasons for support there...that media labeling is divisive.

Only Millionaire-Fence Straddlers Need Apply
At a recent meeting of House Republicans, members ruminating on the disastrous state of their party reportedly murmured with gloomy jocularity about the administration of "President Hastert". A CounterPuncher familiar with the proceedings reports "they were only half joking".

Yet, as they contemplate political ruin in next year's election, these Republicans can take solace in the fact that, if defeated, their replacements may not differ in any meaningful way on important issues of the day. That at least is the hope and dream of Democratic apparatchik Rahm Emmanuel and the corporate toadies he represents. Ominously, Emmanuel, a relict of the Clinton White House, heads the Democratic National Campaign Committee.

As such, he decides which candidates for the House should get money and other support from the national party. At a time when any fool can see that the public hates the war more this month than last, and will hate it even more next month and the month after that, Emmanuel is doing his best to recruit candidates, preferably rich ones, guaranteed to eschew vocal opposition to the war.

In the name of seizing some of the oldest images of resistance. I bring you a proposal. If you like it, please spread it.

The Class Politics of Volunteerism
The anarchist press... It is no coincidence that women volunteer more than men in a sexist society. Women are the free labor units for childcare, housework and yes, social volunteerism. Women are still, even in 2005, playing the unpaid social housekeepers. And the poor are still taking on a disproportionate amount of volunteer labor. At this point, I have decided to quit volunteering for any organization where the board members/leaders of the organization live at a higher class level than me. No exceptions.

America's manic culture is killing us
The central idea in "American Mania" by Peter C. Whybrow, 2005, is that American culture has become manic. We are running too fast, trying to cram too much into our lives, sleeping too little, neglecting our personal relationships and the social health of our society. We are addicted to speed, and to the material results (for some of us) speed produces. A primary characteristic of an addiction is that it becomes self-accelerating, because it can never be fully satisfied. We always want more.

Portland Tribune: Taxpayers Should Subsidize More New Roads, Houses, and Pollution
In recent weeks the Portland Tribune, particularly through articles penned by the once-progressive Jim Redden, has been serving as a vehicle of unchallenged propaganda promulgated by the Portland area's massive growth machine--which itself is owned and operated by the most influential, elite leaders in big business and new construction, such as Don Morrisette, poster boy for the Home Builders Association, Portland Business Alliance's CEO Susan McDonough, and big-business attorney Jay Waldron of Schwabe Williamson and Wyatt.

The growth machine's propaganda goes like this: It's inevitable that the region's population will keep increasing, so we have to keep creating more jobs and keep building more houses and roads in order to ensure that the region's population will keep increasing. Tacked on to this circular argument is the threat that the machine's operators have been holding over our heads, also utterly false and absurd: If we don't keep spending our tax dollars on ensuring that the region's population and consumption will keep increasing, and if we don't keep subsidizing the building of more houses, roads and other new structures, our economy and livability will suffer even more than they already have been suffering because of the last two decades of precipitous growth.

The Tribune has yet to publish any truly sustainable solutions, which would outline how to preserve and enhance our resources, land, prosperity, and livability by means that decrease our population, consumption, and pollution.

I suppose I'm posting this in an interest to start conversation about how issues of integration/segregation and lack of opportunities are the issue in the French riots, as well as how complicated AND CASE SPECIFIC four factors like spatial realtions, history, class, and caste relations can make a world of difference how a particular "ethnic regime" position is constructed. Black Americans and Native Americans are closer to what French Muslims positionally experience I say, becase of how the "ethnic regimes" many factors work out, instead of what American Muslims experience.

Ex-Rep. Paul Findley On Dec. 1, 2005, at a public forum, on Capitol Hill, ex-Rep. Paul Findley (R-IL), urged President George W. Bush to pull U.S. troops out of Iraq-promptly. Villains Honoring Villians in the privatization of national parks
Some of you may recall a message I distributed in mid-October titled, "Villains Honoring Villains". To my delight, nationally-known political columnist Bill Berkowitz has taken that message, combined it with others I've written, added some original research and produced what others have already called "A 'Must Read' Privatization Primer."

I've pasted Berkowitz's article below and encourage you to not only read it, but to share it with friends and associates. The more the general public understands the privatization threats that are upon us, the less will be the losses suffered.

Thanks for your continuing help and support in beating back this privatization agenda..
