Humans are not meant to be lambs for the slaughter.
A series of random thoughts about what makes Portland great and what threatens that greatness. Written originally as a response to some Zoo Bomb detractor it became a thing itself. I hope it sparks thoughtful reflection and quality conversation.
A sample: Beware of those who promise quick, easy, or painless economic recovery for they are selling you a bill of goods that you do not want. Beware of those who complain about the social backwater of Oregon because they threaten to reshape your community rather than to celebrate its beauty. Beware of people who proclaim affinity with Portland and point to their bumper sticker to prove it after they bitch everything that would make Portland better. Portland is a beautiful and socially progressive and evolving place; beware of those who were not drawn here by that beauty and by that social community because they cannot see or appreciate the only true value and beauty that Portland, specifically, and Oregon, generally, has to offer.

Thanx for respecting FREDOM OF THE PRESS in a world becoming very dismal and bleak with self censorship of the pree and Orwellian Thought Police (read political correctness).
The Peace and Justice movement needs to be more succesful. We are losing ground. Think why this is? What can we do to gain ground? Who can you make peace with today to help the movement? Can you help heal each other? When is the animosity going to stop? When will the Understanding begin?

"Narcotics have been systematically scapegoated and demonized. The idea that anyone can use drugs and escape a horrible fate is an anathema to these idiots. I predict that in the near future right-wingers will use drug hysteria as a pretext to set up an international police apparatus."

The big news throughout the European and Canadian press is a recent declaration by Michael Meacher, former Minister of the Environment in the UK, that Bush and his administration not only had foreknowledge of the September 11, 2001, attack on the World Trade Center, but allowed it to happen in order to pursue world domination. And yet the U.S. press, including the center-column feature editors of every U.S. indymedia site, has ignored the story so far, despite many posts. pdx indymedia gets a temporary dispensation for having an entire section on the 9.11 investigation, though i hope they put up something soon! The other indymedias will likely ignore it, though, as they are run by liberals who take their cues from The Nation, Mother Jones, Z magazine, CommonDreams, and other institutions of the head-in-the-sand left, and are afraid to take on the issue for fear of losing "credibility" or being called "conspiracy theorists". With Meacher's declaration, however, this topic has moved out of the fringes, and deserves full front page play. Will indymedia do it?

Exposing the phony terrorism of the 9/11/2001 disaster and other recent similar government conspired incidents of terrorism in an effort to promote their communist agenda as proven by their unwillingness to permit full investigation of the attacks.
Exponentialism operates to be a "supercomponent" of reality. It is a realism of sorts, a realism that inflates the modes, intentions, practices, habits, compulsions, qualities, etc. of reality. In this case, it is the tactics of misinformation and convolusion (as practiced by the media outlets, politicians, public figures in Western society), the binary basis of politics, and commercial/colonial ownership that are being inflated and exponentialized.
Jessica Kate Williams was 22 years old and homeless when allegedly 12 other homeless youth and young adults repeatedly stabbed her, set her on fire, and left her to die under a Portland, Oregon bridge on May 23, 2003. (1) The violent nature of her death - along with what a district attorney called the "Lord of the Files" (2) feel to it - captured immediate media attention. It was not the first murder in 2003 of someone who lived homeless in America. In fact, over the period of 1999 - 2002 the National Coalition for the Homeless tracked the murders of 123 homeless individuals who were killed by people who were not homeless and another 89 violent attacks were noted that did not result in death. (3) Most of these crimes have gained little media attention. Homeless on homeless violence confirms our stereotypes of who homeless people are and is easier to digest than crimes committed against homeless people by those who have homes. All these violent incidents, however, must force Christians - and other religious people - to seriously consider how our failure to acknowledge the bonds of common humanity between us have lead to an increasing numbers of deaths. Bringing justice to this growing crisis on both individual and societal levels should be of paramount concern to people of faith.
When the leaders of Europe and the UN meet to discuss sending troops to Iraq they must remember that the hands of the clock have been turned back to Munich 1938. It is understood that behind the scenes the leaders of Europe are facing extreme pressure and are being offered incredible bribes to comply with the request. However, they must realize they are dealing with a madman and a regime full of lunatics that are willing to risk nuclear war for their own personal gain.
For the most part, the alarmists have simply moved from citing solid data to using estimates and from using U.S. figures to citing worldwide ones, all of which are estimates.
we need to find a way to deal with rapists
Let's talk about "Collateral Damage". Where did this term come from? How did collateral damage become the description for civilian deaths in what have been illegal wars perpetrated by America?
Based on what I have heard, the spin doctors have written a speech for Bush to deliver to the American people Sunday evening which explains that the billion dollar a week cost of the Iraq invasion is worth it, because it will help to win the war on terrorism. I think I could do a better job than those sorry spin doctors...
The dominant religion influences the surrounding culture in profound ways...for example, as Joseph Campbell described the situation, he preferred Buddhism since it produces a tolerant, diverse and non-violent culture. Similarly Christianity continues to exert an unconcious influence in the lives of those who are influenced by the culture it produced. An attempt to analyze and clearly identify the way this process works...
"The US wages a pure imperial war of conquest with the admitted lies that its own country and the world had to be preventively defended against the threat of weapons of mass destruction...Everyone defended the front of silence toward an unwilling but brainwashed population.. i noticed a poster on a telephone poll on SE Division promoting a big action on, i think, Sept. 20. It looked like it was being sponsored by a lot of the groups that did the big peace rallies over the winter. i haven't seen anything about it on indymedia yet, though. who knows more about this event and can post something? is it in solidarity with the WTO protests in Cancun?

There has always been a wealthy elite in this country, and there has always been a gap between the rich and the poor. But the disparities in wealth and income that currently exist in this country have not been seen in over a hundred years. Today, the richest 1 percent own more wealth than the bottom 95 percent, and the CEOs of large corporations earn more than 500 times what their average employees make. The nation's 13,000 wealthiest families, 1/100th of one percent of the population, receive almost as much income as the poorest 20 million families in America.

A well written article from a libertarian-socialist view.
A pre-war analysis i thought was pretty interesting.
ZIONIST MASSACRES IN 1948: New evidence
The following article (3160 words!) was published in the Hebrew daily Ha'ir on 6 May 1992. It contains new revelations about war crimes committed by the Zionist forces in 1948 against Palestinian Arabs.
There are a number of reasons why the publication of this information is important:
It shows once more and through the pen of Israeli historians what motivated the Palestinian Arabs to flee in 1948.
It shows how the Zionist establishment has attempted and still attempts to hide the truth about the massacres of Palestinians in the 1948 War.
It exposes the fallacy according to which it was mainly right-wing Zionists (the terrorist groups IZL and LEHI led by Menahem Begin and Yitzhak Shamir) who committed atrocities against Palestinian Arabs in 1948. In fact, most atrocities and massacres were committed by 'nice Jewish boys and girls', from the Labour movement, may of whom grew up in kibbutzim in a humanist environment.
It exposes the myth, entertained in the West, according to which Israel's practices towards Palestinians worsened when the right-wing Likud came to power.
It documents the development of a growing awareness among Israeli intellectuals of the need to face the past with honesty. This is a rather recent and salutary phenomenon.
An appendix to the article includes summary descriptions of some other massacres (published along the article in Ha'ir).
Elias Davidsson translated from Hebrew and added some explanatory notes .

With polls showing that up to 16% of the electorate is philosophically libertarian, this could be the real swing vote in 2004. Will libertarians decide that the Democratic candidate is the lesser of two evils for once? Or will they simply stay home in disgust on Election Day?

What follows is a letter I sent out to my family and friends right after the U.S. began it's attacks on Iraq. After I sent out the first letter I got these responses from my aunt who is a working class republican. I think the dialogue shows what your average conservative thinks pretty well. For all of us who ask, "How can they believe this sh**?". Here is how they justify it.
This reads like a transparent editorial from a biased corporate newspaper - what a joke. Common Dreams has become one of the Dean-pimps, pushing anything about Dean in our faces regardless of the superficiality of the actual piece. Will this be in the other Dean-pimp publications too now? In Alternet, the Progressive, the Nation? Try writing an article like this about Kucinich and see if any of these will publish it. Good luck.

"The preemptive war against Iraq broke thenorms of the community of states. International law was degraded in its importance.. The preemptive war against Iraq was primarily an attempt of the US to triumph over the sovereignty of the international community. This disempowerment of international law is a unique dangerous mega-political experiment with unforeseeable consequences." Translated from the German
"The gigantic blackout (that will certainly not be the last) was a direct consequence that the US is so exemplary in the special neoliberal disciplines privatization and lower costs.. Neoliberalism isn't a specific US affair but a worldwide consensus of crisis capitalism overarching the parties.. The guideline of profitmaximization for the investor at any cost leads to an abstract cost cutting pressure that is counter-productive."
