Mr Howdy Doodee Ali Saleh Kahlah Al-Marri 15.06.2006 08:54
why asking for a lawyer is more important than silence
What do Martha Stewart and enemy combatant Ali Saleh Kahlah Al-Marri have in common? They were both indicted, under Title 18, United States Code, Section 1001, for lying to federal government agents. Ms. Stewart now stands convicted of intentionally misleading SEC and FBI officials who questioned her about insider trading. Mr. Al-Marri was one of several hundred immigrants who voluntarily submitted to FBI interviews in the wake of the September 11, 2001 attacks. He was later charged with lying, during his interview, about the timing of a previous trip to the United States. Here are two criminal defendants from widely divergent backgrounds. Yet both were ensnared by Section 1001, a perennial favorite of federal prosecutors.

The social movements in France: Political lessons from the last 10 years
For more than 200 years, France has been seen as the country in which class contradictions are most openly fought out and which provided the social impulse for events that have had European-wide repercussions. This applied to the revolutionary period from 1789 to 1815, and then again in 1831, 1848, 1871, and finally in 1968, when the May-June revolt, which began in Paris, spread like wildfire across Europe.
The conflicts surrounding the so-called "First Job Contract" (Contrat premičre embauche—CPE), which shook France during the past two months, are of such a character and have significance far beyond French borders. They show in exemplary fashion the real social and political condition of Europe. Even if, based on historical tradition, the French population is rather more inclined to take to the streets in their millions than, for example, the Germans, the same explosive tensions and political conflicts are also at work here and in the rest of Europe.

For many years prior to the Bush era US foreign policy drifted toward a debacle in the Middle East. Under the present administration the drift became a rush toward unparalleled catastrophe. Can we avert an explosion that will shake the world? The coming days will demand all of our strength, courage, and commitment to peace. Even so, we will probably fail without a flowering of openness and self-criticism unprecedented in American life.

Even my parole officer deceived me into beleiving that I was doing great until she, another paorle officer and a civilian female who I had mistakenly allowed to reside with me decided to get rid of me so the female they had befriended could have my rental house. Here is the law suit that I have had to file against them to restore myself to whole. I have them dead to rights in all of their lies and typically of the federal government they would rather waste hardearned taxpayer revenue to fight me all the way than be accountable and admit their malfeasance as all of the rest of us would have to do....

There is no "war on terror." The invasion and occupation of Iraq are not part of a "war on terror." Neither are the current threats and war preparations against Iran. The "war on terror" doesn't exist—no matter how many times the Bush administration cites it to justify its aggressions, no matter how often Republicans and Democrats debate how to best carry it out, and no matter how frequently it's referenced in the U.S. bourgeois media.

100 Protesters Massacred: This Day In History: Remembering Tiananman Square
Activism*Human Rights*Global Unity
==========================
Originally intending to do a write up commemorating the 400 injured and hundreds jailed and killed by the People's Liberation Army on June 4, 1989, I had the good fortune to interview a group of students from China. To my dismay, their views ranged from complete apathy to nationalistic rationalizations of the regime's actions (it was a long time ago/it was very complicated/those people weren't working). That view sharply contrasts with that of Americans towards, say, Kent State, where four antiwar protesters were shot by National Guardsment.

Moving Beyond Tolerance to Respect
In a personal revelation today, I realized it is not enough to just "tolerate" our differences. Although many activist organizations proclaim "tolerance" as their motto, "tolerance" is really not enough to secure peace. "Respect" is one step beyond "tolerance," and true peace on earth, and in our communities, requires respect. Or as Einstein said, "We can't solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them."
