Google, censorship and one surprising phone call you can make.
Google has cooperated with Chinese government wishes for censorship by providing a search engine that when accessed from inside China or Tibet, excludes popular links considered pro-democratic/independence with information regarding Tibet, Tianamen Square, etc. As the Google homepage lacked info or a means of comment, I called co-founder Sergey Brin...

About Your Smoking: A Delicate Issue
I know, a lot of people smoke. Bizarrely, a lot of radicals, who are usually aware of their impact on the planet and each other more than most people, also smoke. (People who would cut off their arm before lifting a coke bottle yet nevertheless think nothing of lifting a Camel.) I also know that nicotine is one of the most addictive substances on the planet, and it makes people nuts to think anyone might interfere with their next fix. (I've seen it happen.) But...do you have a moment?

Richard Perle: A Serial Warmonger!
Cookie Time for Richard Perle Richard Perle is at it again! He tossed a hizzy fit when the Bush-Cheney Gang decided to have "talks" with Iran over their disputed nuclear program. The Mother of All Neocons implied President George W. Bush was a coward. He said the President "blinked" and that the Mullahs had "glared" him down. Perle has no shame! He helped to create the disaster which is the Iraqi War. Now, he wants to set the stage for a repeat U.S. performance with Iran.

Supreme Court's Decision Upholds Kansas Death Penalty on States Rights
The federalist majority on the US Supreme Court today broke a stalemate concerning the death penalty in Kansas for a man convicted of the brutal murder of a woman and child in 1996. The 5-4 decision was sharply devided as liberals sought to establish standards for juries to weigh evidence in death penalty cases. Conservatives/federalists contended that it is the right of the states to debate and pass legislation weighing the use of capital punishment as a deterrent of violent crime.

Regarding the attack by Palestinian guerrillas near Kerem Shalom
The Palestinian left must highlight politically the value of this kind of resistance operation, and counter-pose it politically to terrorist operations directed at random Israeli civilians. The latter type of operation demoralizes the oppressed Palestinians, reinforces Zionism's hold on the Israelis, and (in the words of the ANC's Oliver Tambo) "distorts the nature" of the Palestinian struggle.

THE LEFT'S ISRAEL LOBBY DENIAL As Exemplified by Stephen Zunes, U. of San Francisco
Unlike the lies and omissions of the mainstream media, the Left, in general, is good at telling the truth about Israel's oppression of the Palestinians. But the Left's unwillingness to accept the Israel lobby's role, as one of the most significant obstacles to justice for the Palestinians, in shaping U.S. foreign policy in the Middle East helps to maintain that very policy. Certain Leftists (like Noam Chomsky or Stephen Zunes) actually function as Israel lobby APOLOGISTS and, in that sense, in effect, back door Zionists. It's okay for them to criticize Gentiles who organize (e.g., "Christian Zionists" or Gentiles in the ruling class) for their responsibility in perpetuating the oppression of the Palestinians, but to criticize Zionist Jews (including Jewish neocons) who organize for the same purpose is considered taboo, and for that even some Leftist authorities will label others as "anti-Semitic" - or (as Zunes alternately says) as "_thinking_ like an anti-Semite." In the past, one used to be labeled "anti-Semitic" for criticizing the state of Israel at all; now, some still call others "anti-Semitic" for criticizing the Israel lobby. See the article:

City Club Speaker: "Perfect Storm" of anti-government sentiment in Portland and Oregon
In May, City Club of Portland hosted Adam Davis of the influential research firm, Davis, Hibbits, and Midghall, Inc. His speech has generated much controversy among local politicos. Davis argues that this perfect storm is the result of public distrust of government, lack of understanding of how government works, anger toward both Republicans and Democrats alike, distrust of the (presumably) mainstream media, economic trepidation and stuggles with personal finance, and a desire for more faith-based and moralistic overtones in government and public education. Davis bases these conclusions on focus-group studies he has conducted through his firm. He ends the (lengthy) speech on an optimistic note by citing the wave of retirees, work of non-profit organizations, and a general epiphany among elected officials that they can do better. I'm less optimistic, but I'll publish this article to collect comments before popping Davis' bubble.
