A Letter from Israel
I just received a letter from my cousin who lives in Israel with his family. He was born in NYC but felt a calling and moved to Israel over twenty-five years ago. Now married with six children, he writes of life that is many ways like the rest of ours, except that they live with the reality of violence in ways that we do not. I was moved by it and wanted to share this perspective.

Pedophiles, a helluva enemy to mobilize the stupid-ized
We all know that the real terrorists are those who are funded with millions (and billions) of dollars. They are backed by the most aggressive states in the world. And they carry out their wars with impunity. We all are quite aware of the wars carried out against persons reduced and made into "enemies" abroad. And we have some awareness of wars carried out against persons reduced and made into "enemies" at home. Yet there are some which are Not to be understood as part of this attack, for some reason. Maybe it's because the Left isn't REALLY interested in defending all oppressed people. This article touches not only on truths that are suppressed about the group NO ONE IS ALLOWED TO truly understand, but on the techniques of coercion used by the true terrorists of society, over and over again, without serious understanding.

The Mark Foley scandal: Where is the crime? Down with this reactionary crusade!
It is the capitalists and their parties who politicize sex. They claim to be defending the innocent and vulnerable, but anyone who has seen the pictures from Abu Ghraib prison knows that this government doesn't give a damn about sexual torture and molestation. Their real intent is to persecute anyone who strays outside the completely artificial bounds prescribed by the patriarchal, heterosexual bourgeois family, and in the process arrogate to themselves ever greater police powers.

The Legacy of the Iraqi War Hawks
Crime Scene at the White House The body count goes up and up in Iraq; with more dead U.S. soldiers and Iraqi civilians. Chaos reigns! Yet, the man primarily responsible for this carnage, President George W. Bush, insists on "staying the course." The evil legacy of this conflict metastasizes. The War Hawks, many in the U.S. Congress, some in the Media, along with the Neocons, bear culpability, too, in this matter. The Nov. election may be a last chance to restore sanity in Washington, D.C.

Something is amiss in the great nation called America. Ominous sirens warning this reality can be heard emanating loudly through invisible winds of change circulating our towns and cities. Imitating Others As Control: Is Drag Sexist/Racist?
Next time you see someone performing either gender or race drag, THINK ABOUT IT! Don't support racist or sexist stereotyping via imitation (or gender/race drag), as entertainment. It is not benign humor; no more so than "black face" was. It is very rare that I see any gender or race drag acts that are not sexist and/or racist. Only when the dominant paradigm is the butt of the joke, not the oppressed group, does drag work for me as entertainment.

The Prospects for Fascism in America
It's now cliché for radicals to make links between US policy and Nazi Germany (it's just really easy). Some take the analogy further, claiming that fascism in all its glory is fully integrated into American culture— with death camps soon to come. To some extent the various predictions are credible; the historical correlations are often unshakable. Sometimes however, the fascist bogeyman is revealed as exaggeration, or simply paranoia. Underestimating the drive and desperateness of those pushing the fascist agenda in the US is of course dangerous, with much of the population making this mistake; on the other hand, a common, tactical error many radicals make is in overvaluing the resources, organization, and receptiveness these groups have attained, often leading to demoralization and inaction. Exposing fascist tendencies in the US, their future prospects as well as limitations will be the goal of what follows.

Security Isn't Making Us Safer
No amount of security measures will be able to protect us fully. There will always be a new threat, a fresh technique. And with it, will be fresh new restrictions that will in turn be unable to protect against the next unforeseen threat. As long as people wish to harm us, they will continue working to find ways. That is the real threat that must be confronted, and sadly, it seems the only way that's possible is to destroy the myth that increased security has any chance of deterring terrorism.

Is anyone really that shocked that the Congress put a pedophile in charge of the Missing and Exploited Children Caucus? Come on. When they wanted to "learn" about global warming they brought in Exxon's scientists. When they were trying to figure out if smoking was addictive, they asked the Marlboro Men. Sure, I'm happy that the Republican Party is falling apart faster than Cher's plastic surgery, but I think we've got bigger problems to face, like nuclear weapons and spinach. Oh, apparently lettuce has also joined the axis of e.coli. Vegetables of Mass Destruction. Fuck. Is there anything we shouldn't be scared of? Solzhenitsyn knows how to make the PoPiggies squeal
After the latest incident of PoPiggie bad behavior--as if we've not as yet
had enough already--we need to refresh our memories as to what the great Nobel Laurate--Alexander Solzhenitsyn--had to say about a similar gang of
thugs.

Read carefully what he has to said, then grab your hammer and keep it near
your door and use it when they come knocking on your door...decimate their
ranks by laying a hammer in their skull, and shan't take but a mere few
to removed from the force this way, till the rest squeal in unison that
they "get it" and transform themselves from brutish thugs to men that do
indeed desire PEACE IN OUR TIME!

Swing a hammer and transform a PoPiggie from a brute to a most peaceful
being. One swing should do the trick...if placed right!

Frustrated with pdx protests - a blast from the past....
Every time I read indymedia after a major Bush protest (been doing it since 2001) it's striking to me how EXACTLY the same the feedback is at least since late 2003.

take a moment to read the November 4th, 2004 (two days after Bush's re-election) posting at  http://portland.indymedia.org/en/2004/11/301926.shtml

sound familair?

"I'm tired of every protest being the same"
"I'm tired of authoritarian organizers controlling events"
"We need more effective actions"

I trace the phenomena to one thing: creative, diversity-minded-yet-anti-authoritarian activists in the community have stoped having a prominent role in organizing actions in this town. [Making an anonymous call for a black blac 2 weeks before a protest doesn't really qualify as organizing].

They complain, but have almost never since 2003 to actually take the serious time (say, 6 months to a year) to plan something BETTER.

Some of us don't bother going to these protests anymore because either:
a) they are are organized by the more authoritarian left, or
b) because they are barely organized at all.

Frankly, we have only ourselves, and our lack of commitment to radical organizing (as opposed to merely radical rhetoric), to blame.

Stop shit talking on indymedia: Don't mourn, organize.
