“Pro Surge” Mikulski Is Paving the Way for Hillary!
Want-to-be president, Sen. Hillary "War Lite" Clinton (D-NY), recently gushed over U.S. Sen. Barbara Mikulski (D-MD). She said that "Pro-Surge" Mikulski had "paved" the way for her. Indeed, Mikulski has done a lot of paving, especially with respect to the manufacturing jobs lost on her watch. In addition, Mikulski persists in supporting funding for the Iraqi War. Now, it has been disclosed that she knew the Bush-Cheney Gang was lying about the war.

Gentrification and Real Estate Mania
Do not be fooled. Real Estate is the worst possible investment anyone can make. In its truest sense, Real Estate is not an investment, rather it is the purchase of a consumer item - a purchase which benefits everyone else involved except the buyer. No matter how you look at it Real Estate is about rental - not about ownership. Common sense understanding about title law should make this clear. When one "buys" Real Estate, they are paying the seller for a state granted "deed" in order to use the land for a specific purpose which is dictated by state and local zoning laws. Essentially, even if you pay cash for land, you are shifting the landlord from the bank directly to the state. Conversely, buying stocks does not require getting a "title" from the state. This difference is why stocks and bonds offer so much more liquidity than Real Estate. You cannot place a "stop loss" order on a Real Estate purchase.

“Free Trade” and Mass Layoffs in Portland
On April 14th in Portland Oregon, at the doors of NAFTA-loving Democratic Senator Ron Wyden's office, as many as 300 trade unionists came out in a spirited rally representing occupations that ranged from nurses to longshoremen. They were there to protest mass layoffs at a Daimler-Chrysler owned plant that manufactures Freightliner trucks. They were also demanding that Senator Wyden vote against the renewal of Fast Track which eliminates Congressional review, mark-up and oversight of trade agreements, while giving large corporations special access to trade negotiators. These trade unionists saw a direct connection between the mass layoffs and the free trade policies Fast Track has helped to mold.

Over 800 living-wage jobs were lost on March 29 at the Daimler-Chrysler plant, almost half of its workforce. In all, 632 members of Machinists Local 1005, 65 members of Painters Local 1094, 94 members of Teamsters Local 305, and 11 members of Service Employees Local 49 were given the axe with no expectation of recall. This blow was part of a national round of layoffs of up to 4,000 workers involved in the manufacture of Freightliner Trucks.

Del. Jill P. Carter As a result of the Bush-Cheney Gang's insane "Surge" strategy, 1,300 Maryland Nation Guard members will be deployed to the hell hole that is Iraq. On May 3, 2007, in Baltimore, a rally was held to protest that action. Maryland State Del. Jill P. Carter blasted U.S. Senators Barbara Mikulski and Ben Cardin for funding the war and then saying that they wanted to "protect the troops." She called that bizarre conduct: "politically schizophrenic."

The 2008 American Elections: Calvin Coolidge or George Bush?
It is characteristic of an American election cycle to consist of nothing but a steady stream of prevarication and unadulterated bullshit. Since it is not possible for an electorate to vote sensibly or make informed choices in the absence of an informed electorate, I have decided to wade into the debates myself, and do the American voter a big favor by clearly spelling out the true meaning of the policy issues confronting American voters in the upcoming elections. Somebody has to do it, and since it seems that no one else will, I guess the task falls to me. I have always believed that if you know enough to complain that somebody else isn't doing something then you know enough to do it yourself. With that thought in mind I will begin clarifying the issues by cutting through that smokescreen of political bullshit that currently characterizes America's political process.

No Killing Sea Lions
Last week, some old guy from Rainier shot a sea lion in the river, because it had (GASP!) eaten a salmon. The very thing the fisherman had planned to do, had nature endowed him better for such things. No one shoots fishermen, though. The fishermen are all worked up, the lawmakers are looking for cheap and easy "solutions" to the problem of declining salmon populations, and even some "environmentalists" (the ones who think in numbers and theories, rather than in living beings) insist that it's time to start killing sea lions to save salmon.

If Nancy Pelosi and Congress really want the war to end and U.S. personnel to leave Iraq, it doesn't have to cost $100 billion or even $10 billion. For just $450 million, Congress could hire U.S. airlines to fly all U.S. troops (and contractors) home for good, in time to enjoy summer with their families.

Modern analysis of 20th century Russian history indicates that the struggle of Russia vs. Germany in WWII was not a struggle for the glory of socialism. It was in defense of Mother Russia. Don Imus vs. Rap Music Debate Continued:
Randi Rhodes of Air America is still wrong when she claims that "the" issue (insisting there is only one issue) is no more than white people blaming rap music for words like "ho" when used in the derogatory sense. Don Imus question: "What about rap music?" is a legitimate question—even if "pseudo-liberals" (real liberals consider fairly all relevant points of view before getting judgmental) are quick to dismiss it. In fact dogmatic certitude that there is "one" significant way (my way or the highway) to interpret the debate is itself a red flag.

We Ought Not Grow Cows In Dry West
It has been estimated that if all of the ranching that exists from the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains to the west coast of the United States was eliminated that only two percent of the national beef production would be affected. This is because of the nature of the landscape in the west of America where it takes about fifty times the amount of land to raise one cow as it does in the biomass-rich east. Given how much more delicate the countryside is in the region, it makes little sense to put cows all over and make the entire west into what Edward Abbey called "cow burnt." In case you are wondering: no, bison do not have nearly the effect that cattle do. Hoof shape and the migratory instinct lessen such impact.

What’s Really in the Flake-Gutierrez (STRIVE) Act?
Many traditional immigrant rights organizations are putting enormous pressure on grass roots groups to support the "Security Through Regularized Immigration and a Vibrant Economy Act" (STRIVE). This proposal, put forward by Democrats Jeff Flake (AZ) and Luis Gutierrez (IL), is being presented as a "lesser evil" and "the best we can get". While on the surface it isn't as overtly aggressive as Sensenbrenner's HR4437, this remains an enforcement-first bill and offers little or nothing to immigrant workers and their families.

ImmigrantsThis is not what millions of immigrant workers marched for last spring. This is not why hundreds of grass roots organizations were formed across the country in order to fight for unconditional legalization for all.

The Fall of Schumacher Furs
What follows are my opinions and only my opinions. This web page may contain inaccurate and uninformed opinions, however, and as such you are encouraged to not accept anything you read here as being even remotely accurate, and you're also encouraged to do your own research into the history of
the destruction of the Schumacher Furs® company.

Eventually this web site will contain links to a detailed history of this battle against what's arguably a totally repugnant industry which has been obsolete for decades and which is attempting to fight against
its own inevitable extinction.

Personally I don't eat meat, I have a cow skin hat that I wear in the mountains and in the Mojave Desert, and I would never wear some dead animal's fur. Also I would never picket or protest a fur store unless its owners and operators engaged in highly abusive or criminal acts against innocent people
which needed to be exposed and opposed. At the same time I recognize that these picketers and protesters have every right to do what they do and that they hold the moral high ground in this national debate.
