The Partisan American media and the Whitehouse/CIA scandal
The effects of years of media consolidation certainly become obvious when you compare the treatment of 'scandal' during the Clinton Administration with the kid glove treatment given the Bush administration for genuine scandals about a hundred times worse...some cartoon commentary from Tom Tomorrow seems appropriate...

Old People for Sale
The story of adult foster care in Portland serves as a fable to those who would claim that market forces are the best, most efficient, most effective way to meet our societal needs. In point of fact, commodification on the market robs important human relationships of their dignity and their meaning. This commodification can even be dangerous.

The Trouble with Liberals - ‘Blaming the Victim'
Recently an anarchist posted a piece criticizing liberals for adopting positions that were basically equivalent with those of an undercover cop. A much more devastating critique of liberal Democrat ideology was published in 1971, by a black American, William Ryan. The title of the book is 'Blaming the Victim', which one reviewer called "an impassioned, brilliant expose of middle class ideology' and another called 'an illusion shatterer of the first order (which) will stop you dead in your tracks.'

Why Do Liberals Defend the CIA?
The most recent phony "scandal" to come out of Washington DC is the issue of how Joseph Wilson's CIA wife was unmasked as an operative for "The Company." What is pathetic is how phony Progressives and Demorats have jumped all over this issue like a cop on a jelly donut, waxing indiginant about how the CIA's (terrorist) operations around the world have been jeopardized.

Alternatives to Globalization?
The anti-free trade lobby are right to point to the conflict between the drive towards free trade and other environmental and social needs. After all, if the purpose of free trade is to increase profits, such a conclusion is quite predictable. As Larry Elliott put it, writing in The Guardian:

In reality, globalisation... represents the final triumph of capital over labour, since the corollary of the deregulation of finance is the shackling of trade unions . It means the national governments are left powerless in the face of multinationals who will relocate at the first whiff of interventionist policies.(9)

So what is the alternative to 'globalisation'?

Joshua Hammer, Newsweek's man on the ground in Jerusalem, wrote an article for Mother Jones entitled "Rachel Corrie: Martyr, Idiot, Dedicated, Deluded." Recently, Pham Nguyen wrote a detailed rebuttal exposing Hammer's article as a fraud, little more than an elaborate plagiarism pieced together from a motley assortment of rightwing websites, together with unsubstantiated innuendos, falsehoods, and uncritical quotes from israeli military PR people. Mojones gave this article prime space in their last issue, with Hammer's inflammatory, eye-catching title blaring from their front cover. According to the President's speech at the United Nations, Iraq is the main front in the 'war against terrorism.' History repeats itself : the British fought a protracted Vietnam style conflict against 'terrorism in Iraq' earlier in the century. Who Are The Citizens Against the Government Takeover?
Posted this about an hour ago and it never came up!

If you watch TV or listen to radio in Portland you will have seen an anti PUD commercial that suggests that since PGE and Pacific Power have always done a good job, there's no need to vote for a PUD which will "add another layer of government" and significantly raise property taxes. The wording in the commercial suggests that voters should base their decision on PGE of the past . . . something that hasn't existed since Enron bought the company. PGE is now simply a part of Enron's corporate assets which a bankruptcy court could parcel out or sell to anyone in the near future . . . someone with no association to, or interest in, our community.
