Iraq's underdog soccer team overcomes great obstacles to win the prestigious Asian Cup
They played their hearts out and it showed as this team made up of Kurds, Shiite, Sunni and Turkman held it together and handily beat a tough Saudi squad 1-0 to win Asia's premiere soccer tournament for the first time in their footballing history. no thanks to Goerge. Hopefully he won't try to take credit for this one. A few years ago there was a media squabble between the Iraqi soccer players and the white house over politicizing their successes at the time.

Southern Rednecks
A little background. I have told the story of the company I keep, and the unusual luminous craft that can be seen over the sky in my hometown. The Pentagon and the CIA know what I am taling about, because they don't need to send in some mole to infiltrate some organization since I am out in the open every night, and thus I am easy to spy on. For the public record I wanted to send this message in their general direction and post it somewhere other than my own website at the same time. Anyone who doesn't know what I am talking about because of all that ruthless oppression that keeps going on can visit my site and follow links.

Tales of Angst, Alienation and Martial Law: Roasting Marshmallows on the American...
fascist mind control In this summer of angst and grim foreboding about what further assaults against common sense and common decency the Bush Administration might inflict upon the people of the world, how many times during the day do those of us -- still possessed of mind, heart and conscience -- take pause, hoping we've seen the worst of it, then, fearing we haven't yet, attempt to push down the dread rising within us, so that we might simply make it through the day and be able to rest at night? Accordingly, those who have been paying attention are aware that the outward mechanisms of martial law are in place. We shudder knowing that Bush has issued an executive decree that grants him dictatorial power in the event of some nebulously defined national emergency. In addition, the knowledge nettles us that a vast network of internment camps bristle across the length of the U.S., standing at wait for those who might raise objections to the fascistic fury unloosed by the American empire's version of the Reichstag fire.

Sicko and Socialism
Michael Moore's latest film, SiCKO, is from beginning to end an all-out assault on the for-profit U.S. health care system. Most of us have heard of the 47 million Americans, including 10 million children, without health insurance, a number that has been steadily rising ovCost of US Healthcareer the last few years.

But Moore clearly states in the opening minutes of the film that SiCKO isn't about them. The focus of the movie is on the nearly 250 million Americans who are insured. He focuses on how the health industry in the U.S. is set up not to provide, but rather to deny care. As a former "denial management specialist" says in the film, "It's not unintentional. It's not a mistake. It's not an oversight. You're not slipping through the cracks. Somebody made that crack and swept you towards it, and the intent is to maximize profit."

A Short Introduction to Marx's Das Kapital
Marx's analysis of capitalism, unlike bourgeois accounts, is conducted from a historical perspective. In other words, Marx was keenly aware that during the march of history, one economic system, because of internal, irreconcilable contradictions, has been replaced by another until it too falls victim to similar contradictions. Of course, when one is born and matures within a single economy and lacks knowledge of any other system, one tends to take one's own for granted, believing that it will persevere forever. A historical perspective has the advantage of forcing us to rise above the provincial perspective that assumes economic systems are eternal. We survey from above the vast array of systems that have played their fleeting role on history's stage. For this reason, Marx's analysis of capitalism is specifically written with the purpose of unveiling its inner contradictions so that the possibility of its demise stands boldly in relief. This runs directly opposed to bourgeois portrayals of capitalism as "natural" and hence as unalterable as the law of gravity itself.

Robert Fisk is one of the greatest reporters of all time. He has written some of the most insightful, biting criticisms about U.S./Israeli/British foreign policy and provided readers, in vivid detail, a vision of of the plight of people living in war torn areas of the Middle East. I have nothing but sincere gratitude to him for putting his life on the line to give us these excellent stories. But, having said this, I think he is doing a disservice to his readers by claiming his contempt for the Internet and also by his refusal to look critically into the events of 9/11.

Hey you Congressman! - Listen up.
We American must begin to realize that America's twin problems - the economic insecurity of our endangered middle class and the demise of our representative democracy are two problems that are as intertwined as the circulatory system of Siamese twins. More Americans must realize that Big Business/Corporations/Multi National Mega Corporations influence politics for their own benefit - and far more effectively than the average American voter could ever hope. When huge campaign chests are necessary for any national campaign, our politicians - almost of necessity must compromise their independence. In my opinion just about every politician in DC should recuse themselves. Our government has come to serve the interests of international corporations - often to the tune of billions for Corporate Welfare passed out by way of no-bid contracts - and our politicians are certainly not serving America's exclusive national interests (anyone remember the Dubai deal?). Our politicians have privatized many critical services such as emergency services, our postal system, and our prison system; even our intelligence agencies are hiring independent contractors. Our politicians have all but eliminated any system of social safety nets, at the same time our Representatives spend increasing amounts of our tax money for corporate welfare: Agri-business subsidies increasingly put the small American farmer out of business. The pharmaceutical industry accepts our tax-money to fund research - then turns around and gouges the American public and sells the same drugs more cheaply to foreign countries.

The Politics of Complaining, Grumbling, and Whining
I know that certain topics generate more "whining" slurs directed towards me than others. When I speak about poverty issues or sexism, I get markedly more accusations of "whining" than when I complain about the Iraq War or the environment's destruction. Although in the 1970's, when I complained about environmental issues, I was labeled a "whiner." Even Al Gore was labeled a "whiner" in the past over his environmental books and stance, yet now he is deemed a near hero for the same thing termed "whining" in the past. Thus "whining" has some political context to it. Different things are perceived as "whines" in different eras. Since certain topics are perceived as "whining" topics, due, it seems, to the status quo, it makes sense that "whining" has political implications.

Fascism: What it is and how to fight it
What is fascism? The name originated in Italy. Were all the forms of counter-revolutionary dictatorship fascist or not (That is to say, prior to the advent of fascism in Italy)?

The former dictatorship in Spain of Primo de Rivera, 1923-30, is called a fascist dictatorship by the Comintern. Is this correct or not? We believe that it is incorrect.

The fascist movement in Italy was a spontaneous movement of large masses, with new leaders from the rank and file. It is a plebian movement in origin, directed and financed by big capitalist powers. It issued forth from the petty bourgeoisie, the slum proletariat, and even to a certain extent from the proletarian masses; Mussolini, a former socialist, is a "self-made" man arising from this movement.
