How I finally woke to smell the corporate coffee
I have often stated that progressives must abandon party labels to vote for issues - not for a Democratic (big D) party logo or for corporate sponsored candidates of either party. Frequently, I have also insisted that the many apathetic citizens who don't vote are not going to be motivated by more of the same but some Democrats have told me that, "Really frustrated Dems, like yourself, have been saying essentially the same thing for 70 years, at least." - I wonder if really frustrated Dems continue to repeat the same complaint because fascism has lurked in the wings of our national life since the era of the robber barons. I have very lately come to believe that corporatism or fascism infects both parties, and that the conservative counter-revolution could not have succeeded so well without the votes and complicity of centrist Democrats.

There is an eminent precedent for recapturing excessive profits from government contractors associated with No-Bid Contracts in Wartime and Let's see if Nancy Pelosi, is going to take that off the table as well! Use the funds for a New GI BILL!

The Long Blue Line A lot has changed since 9/11, mostly all for the worse. When I took the commuter train from Baltimore to Washington, D.C., on the morning of Aug. 7, 2007, "Big Brother" knew I was on it, since an ID is needed to buy a ticket. When I got to D.C., "Big Brother's'" cameras watched me get on and off the Metrorail. When I tried to videotape a demonstration at the DOE, a security guard threatened to confiscate my camcorder and to put me "in handcuffs!"

China's Economic Blackmail Is Working
Cheap Chinese products are a powerful and insidious destructive force. Free trade globalism more than violent terrorism or military attack is bringing America to its knees. The Chinese have us by our budget-deficit balls. Our government depends on China for loaning us money and for not dumping the vast hoard of over one trillion dollars it has accumulated by financing our huge deficits and selling us virtually everything. Dumping dollars is called the Chinese economic nuclear option.

Workers International League - Portland 05.08.2007 15:10
The High Social Cost of Low Corporate Taxes
It is now taken for granted that social services in the U.S. will be under-funded - if they are funded at all. This isn't because average people think that such things are unimportant, but because we've been taught by "our" representatives in government that even a miniscule social safety net is economically impossible (it is never explained why - it just is). As this approach continues to dominate mainstream political life, the living standards of working people everywhere are being destroyed, and the meager reforms politicians have always promised us have devolved into even tinier crumbs and counter-reforms. Indeed, reforms that benefit the working class seem to be impossible in Washington now-a-days, precisely at a time when the wealth of the country has never been greater. To make sense out of such irrationality, one has to consider that this issue isn't limited to the 50 states of the U.S. - it's an international problem, and its cause is no accident.

A good example is the horribly mis-named Job Creation Act of 2004. This bill was the result of years of struggle in the international courts of the World Trade Organization (WTO) between the European Union (EU) and the United States. The EU won a decision that said the U.S. must stop subsidizing their native corporations (giving U.S. corporations a trade advantage, and thus violating the ignored-when-convenient policy of "free-trade"). The U.S. Congress reacted swiftly, and engineered a way to indirectly subsidize their native corporations by eliminating taxes.

The Struggle for Workers’ Power in Venezuela
The Venezuelan revolution, led by socialist President Hugo Chavez, has captured the imagination of millions of people around the world with its increasingly successful challenge to US imperialism and US-backed neoliberal policies that have caused widespread impoverishment across Latin America. Since Chavez's re-election in December on an explicitly socialist platform, there has been a struggle to significantly "deepen" the revolutionary process towards creating a "socialism of the 21st century".

One aspect of the process that has been closely watched internationally is the role of the workers' movement. Venezuela's union movement has been traditionally weak, organising only a small minority of workers. However, enormous hopes were raised with the formation of the National Union of Workers (UNT) in 2003, which supported the revolutionary process. The UNT quickly overtook the right-wing, discredited Confederation of Venezuelan Workers (CTV), which had helped organise attempts to overthrow the Chavez government.

Isn't it becoming increasingly apparent that the power structure in this country is capable of criminal activity on a grand scale ? And isn't it also apparent that the majority of 'good' americans , INCLUDING those of the the Democratic ilk , would just as soon turn away from having to deal with this troubling realization in any direct way , and that corpo media promotes the dumbing down of these ' good citizens ' so that their escape into ignorance is considered sanctioned and approved in main stream culture ?

Shane Jones 31.07.2007 10:04
The Democratic Candidates on healthcare
The issue of health care is on the minds of millions of American workers. The crisis of the health care industry is well-documented in Michael Moore's popular new film "SiCKO". After two terms under Bush, many are looking to the Democrats as an alternative. Every Democrat running for President has a "health care plan" - but what exactly does this mean? Can any of these "liberal" representatives of the ruling class really offer American workers a way out of the disaster of private health insurance?

Hillary ClintonHillary Clinton is well-known for her failed attempt to introduce a "managed competition" health care plan in the 1990s. Today, even that compromise-with-private insurers plan is too "radical" for her. She is now proposing an altogether vague plan for health care "reform". This should come as no surprise, since she has received more campaign money from health care and insurance lobbyists over the last few years than any other candidate. Hillary, like her NY cohort Giuliani, both agree on "market-based" solutions as the only acceptable route for health system reform. She maintains that a single-payer system is "politically unrealistic". She is working with former Speaker of the House, Republican Newt Gingrich, for "incremental" reforms that would include private insurers, with the government subsidizing insurance premiums for those unable to pay.
Barack Obama, who previously resisted making any concrete proposals for health care reform, has recently come out with a plan not dissimilar to Clinton's market based plan. Obama has said he opposes a national single-payer system, in favor of "voluntary solutions" instead of "government mandates".

War and our economy are inseparable problems
Over and over again in my Yahoo Internet groups and on the street I hear Americans railing about the same two issues: immigration and the war. I see that the two problems are as intertwined as the circulatory system of Siamese twins.

Our politicians are caught in between the devil and the deep blue: they must not buck the corporations who fund their campaigns nor can they afford to piss off the voter . Twins under the skin, neither a neocon nor a centrist will ever regret voting for the war or the Patriot Act - ONLY a bad economy would cause voters to turn upon their politicians more viciously than they have after a war gone bad.
