Venezuela today: complexities and outright lies

Debate within 9-11 Truth and AntiWar Movements
Is former LaRouchie Webster Tarpley continuing his master's ways within the antiwar movement? There is something that continues to disturb me about Webster Tarpley's increasing prominence in the 9-11Truth and antiwar movements; I'll try to put some of it into words here. As a member of the 9-11 Truth movement, I am concerned about the direction in which some folks are pulling it. It is so very important that we prevent the movement from degenerating into cult-like groups or being used as a recruiting ground for outright Nazis. My concern is not only over the quality of the information being put out there, it's about what's done with that information and how it is used.

Liberty Quarry and the Iraq War are testing democracy in America. Will the people in Southern California get a quarry they do not want or will the fate of several communities be left in the hands of five Riverside County Supervisors? On the bigger issue of Iraq, will the Democrats and Republicans have the resolve to end the Iraq War and bring our troops home, or will our fate as a nation be left in the hands of one man?

Chomsky and Fodor: On highly evolved thought
The increasing threat to our living planet by the depredations of those who seek profit and status does not sit well with any attempt to characterize human beings as highly evolved thinkers. Especially if evolution-of-thought in humanity is equated with superior intelligence or any other ideal of cleverness. The recent philosophical work of Noam Chomsky and Jerry Fodor (perhaps the leading philosophers of this century) brings this conflict of human thought and planet destruction into clear focus.

John Graham with his daughters: Naneek (left) and Chusia (right) In the '70s, traditional Lakota people opposed the leasing and selling off of reservation lands for mining operations. While the Elders of the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation cried out for help to protect the Lakota's sacred ground and traditional way of life, which was in jeopardy, the US government supported and funded the tribal government, headed by Richard Wilson who favoured uranium mining. It was clear that violence would be applied against any opposition; the FBI was supporting the tribal police with weapons and training.

"Shock and Awe" is what the media and pentagon called the bombardment of Baghdad by U.S. forces at the start of the 2003 Persian Gulf War. We remember the horrible visuals well, just as we remember, in graphic detail, our own shock and awe event on September 11, 2001, when we were treated to the first in a series of psychological trauma for the new the "War on Terror" PR campaign. All of these horrible events were designed to turn us, and Iraqis, into pliable infants, willing to let our government do whatever they want in order to "protect us."

America the Anxiety Based Society
America is what has been called an "anxiety-based society." The common
political glue that explains most of its politics is some variety of
fear: fear of unemployment, fear of foreigners (whether for taking jobs,
or blowing shit up, or bringing in diseases, or "contaminating the gene
pool" with their foreign languages, spicy foods, and swarthy complexions
-- note for the irony impaired: I'm speaking in jest here -- etc etc),
fear of gays (for allegedly threatening "family values," whatever that
is), fear of women (for getting too "uppity" and demanding equal pay for
equal work), fear of labor unions (also for demanding greater social and
economic equality and threatening to shut shit down if they don't get
it). Etc etc.

Eric McDavid: Love Bites
To be honest when the news of the arrest and the confidential informant, whose code name is "Anna", and whose e-mail address on a post long before she was recruited from junior college was  annadavies99@yahoo.com, broke I thought "here's another case of infiltration and people not being careful". But, because no one was able, for legal reasons, to talk about the reality of the case until now, it comes as a bit of surprise that this was an entrapment. It shouldn't be a surprise, but I must be a bit naive or the kind of person that generally doesn't get pushed along into things.

The Anti-War Movement, the Troops, & Some Lessons from Vietnam
Life inside the U.S. military reflects the conflicting class interests in this country, often in its deadliest forms. While technically a "volunteer" military, the great bulk of its recruits come from working class families and are largely joining because of a lack of job and educational opportunities. For them, signing up is a chance to acquire the skills they need to get a decent job once they become civilians, though, in reality, military service has little to offer in this regard. On the other hand, the majority of the military's professional officers and policy makers come from more privileged layers of the population. For them, the military is a career where they can take their "rightful place" lording over the grunts and climb the ladder as they would if they were working for a corporation or financial institution. Because of this divide in opportunity and expectations, which is rooted in class inequality, the great majority of soldiers are subject to the arrogance, lies, and disregard for their personal well-being at the hands of their superiors, as are workers are to the capitalists in civilian life.

The Crucial Question of 9/11: What Went Wrong?
