Further Oppression of the Poor likely at the UN: America – both the Problem and the Soluti
The General Assembly in October, 2008, is set to adopt a complaints procedure (Optional Protocol, OP) for those suffering social injustices (as defined by the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, ICESCR) but in ignoring the most disadvantaged, by excluding core minimum obligations (see below), the UN may render itself virtually irrelevant as defenders of human rights. The way forward, in my view, can be found in what the draft OP omits. A 'bottom-up' human rights approach must, in our view, now be put into place driven by financially independent NGOs. These NGOs can promote what the present draft OP fails to address, namely, what we call its 'major flaws'. This will ensure that a number of important human rights are not completely excluded in society and secure the truth in societies inceasingly in darkness.

The Red White and Blue Roots of Terrorism
George W. Bush As far as I know, nobody has focused upon the real roots of the war on terror, which are also the solution to it—American-sponsored terrorism. Paid military extremist types, trained by us to carry-out attack missions upon civilians are terrorists, our terrorists. They attack civilians, often women and children, as an indirect method of warfare, to topple governments who oppose American expansion. Has anybody questioned what military challenge the world would face today, if the US suddenly stopped all of these covert programs that perpetrate most of the world's "terrorism"?

De-toxing the RNC
Returning to "real life" after the intensity of St. Paul is challenging. So many people there used the word "surreal" to describe the conflicting mix of violence/kindness- brutality/courage- despair/committment. It will matter so much to learn from this, process the experience and not allow our grief and rage to leave lasting scars and diminish our intent to survive and prevail. It will not be easy.

CUBA: Besieged by hurricanes
We had hardly recovered from the emotional impact and material damages caused by the unexpectedly strong winds of hurricane Gustav on the Isla de la Juventud and Pinar del Rio, when news were received of sea floods caused by Hanna. Then, the worst news of all: that the very intense hurricane Ike, turning southwest under pressure from a strong anti-hurricane system located north of its course, would strike heavily over 625 miles throughout the national territory.

It’s Time Anti-War Activists Go Back to School
FOX coverage of the DNC protests Activists protesting the war at last week's Democratic National Convention have come and gone. Banners were unfurled. Protesters marched and chanted. Puppets of Bush and company provided comic relief. But looking back at the conference, there is no clear sign that any of these efforts have gotten us any closer to ending the war.

Some things in life are pretty obvious. One is that you don't attack a heavily armed gang that outnumbers you 30 to 1. So what was Georgian leadership thinking when it ordered an attack on South Ossetia? There can be no question that they thought they would be able to defeat Russia. There are, after all, limits to human idiocy.

DNC Reflections: This Is What Activistism Looks Like
With the exception of a powerful 7,000-strong antiwar demonstration led by the Iraq Veterans Against the War, protests at the Democratic Convention were small and self-marginalizing. Both delegates and Denverites I spoke to throughout the week had no idea what the protests were about to the extent they were aware of them at all. The two main protest groups - Unconventional Action and Recreate '68 - did not have an easy task with the local police and media spreading scare stories for months and with Barack Obama and the Democrats widely perceived as a reforming alternative to eight years of Republican rule. However, there was little effort made to bridge the comprehension gap.

Dems, Media Elite Overreacted to Gov. Sarah Palin
Alaska's Mt. Denali When John McCain picked Gov. Sarah Palin to be his VP running mate, most Americans yawned: "Sarah, Who?" Not the Democrats and the Media Elite. They tossed a first-class hissy fit. One of the worse offenders was the site, "HuffPost." It even created a special page posting a lot ot negative rumors about the "working mom." Meanwhile, GOP speakers, like the pro-Iraq War, pro-waterboarding Sen. Joe Lieberman, got off the hook with little criticism.

Fear -- The Engine of Politics
As long as there has been a United States (and, in fact, a good while longer), such a fear has found expression in the American psyche. The first Congress rushed to pass a Naturalization Act that limited citizenship to white people. Law books are thick with precedents deciding who is (or isn't), white, and by such a judgment, millions of people were turned away from the U.S. because they hailed from India, China, Syria, Palestine, or even Turkey. Many such cases shifted like tectonic plates, using various definitions of whiteness, to accept, or reject, a given applicant.

FUCK Barak Obama
I will NOT stand aside and wait my turn. Not anymore.

I held no illusions about Barak Obama. I did not think him to be the rock star that the media has played him up to be. Because I have actually heard him speak. An entire speech, not just the slick little sound bites and the shot-from-below-the-chin shots in all his commercials. And to be honest, he just ain't all that. He's pretty, but he's empty. And I have been through all this before. I know the Democrat is always supposed to be different... and never is. No, I was not excited about what Barak Obama might do for the nation. But I confess, deep down inside, I was excited by the idea that finally, after more than two centuries of white, male rule, the next president might actually be something other than the White Guy.

The Young and the Leftless: An Open Letter on Organization

It's a poignant prod at the sectarians and a come hither nod at the independents. It's a potluck discussion and a midnight session, and if we could play something hot in the background while you read this, we would. It's a challenge, because we love you, to think about what it's going to take to actually start building a revolutionary movement in the belly of the baddest beast this Earth has seen. We've got some thoughts about ORGANIZATION, and we want to know what y'all think.
