What the Hell is wrong with the US?
The US Government has just refused to sign a United Nations declaration calling for member states to oppose "violations of human rights and fundamental freedoms based on sexual orientation or gender identity" on the basis of the Universal Human Rights chart which is signed by all countries. The US is the *only* country in the West that holds on to this shameful refusal.

As Babylon Falls: Empathy and Self-Sufficiency vs Newspeak and Perpetual War
our collective intuitive-indigenous stuck in Babylon's consequences From cops who beat up the powerless, to local legislation being systematically passed which ignores social 'development', to younger generations which seem to jump quickly and irrationally to killing others, we're seeing the consequences of waiting for bureaucratic 'democracy' to do what we could easily be doing.

The End of Retirement?
Unless things change fast, human history will show that the phenomenon of "retirement" was limited to one generation. After World War II, when European and Japanese economies stood in tatters, American capitalism could fulfill "the American dream," since there was little foreign competition to speak of. For the first time ever, workers were promised that — after working thirty or so years — they would be able to securely retire. That was largely the case... for one generation.

The second generation is having a devastating reality check. 2008 was supposed to be a watershed year for retirement: it was the first year that the baby-boomers turned 62, and the retirement frenzy was to begin (since people could begin to draw on their social security benefits). Early in the year, however, a study was conducted that found one-fourth of these boomers were delaying retirement (only the baby-boomers who were actually able to plan for retirement were studied). The economy has since nosedived, and many more retirements are being delayed. The unfortunate reality is that many who planned on retiring will work until the grave, joining the millions of other baby-boomers who never had such dreams.

insights into why Gov. Blago arrested after boycotting Bank of America, JP Morgan Chase
The day after Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich announced he was asking all Illinois government agencies to suspend business with Bank of America, which had received huge taxpayer bailouts along with its parent company JP Morgan Chase and then closed Republic Windows & Doors company in Chicago and violated all workers' rights and contracts, when auto union workers are under attack, and in time to prevent him from alerting the public to future 9-11-like plans to destroy Chicago's Sears Tower... the media is suddenly distracted by a sting operation that vilifies him, tarnishes Obama and potential Democratic senators, and sets the stage to allow the Republican party and bankers more power in the Senate and media. Instead of uniting us to solve the real and serious, urgent problems threatening us all.

Preparing for the worst: The coming Heffelfinger/Luger report on RNC policing
LET THE RNC '08 REPORT ARCHIVE YOUR SUBMISSION TO THE RNC PUBLIC REVIEW SAFETY COMMISSION! Just a few days after the RNC dust settled, it was announced that the City of St. Paul hired former U.S. Attorney Tom Heffelfinger and former assistant U.S. Attorney Andy Luger to review police plans and how they were carried out during the Republican National Convention. What became immediately clear was that the independent review would not be a fact-finding mission to explore allegations of police wrongdoing or violations of people's rights...

At the most fundamental level, the FOP-led 'Fry Mumia' campaign's lack of concern is racist....The FOP appeals to a racist lynch-mob mentality that has long infected the US, so calling this a 'legal lynching' is no exaggeration.

I have had the opportunity to read one other lengthy submission by a local independent journalist. Whatever the Heffelfinger/Luger report looks like, know at least that many of the submissions to the Commission pulled no punches. One of the requests that we should make is that the submissions themselves are made public, so residents of the Twin Cities have full access to the opinions of their fellow residents as opposed to a filtered report by a Commission with an inadequate mandate.

Leftist Union Leaders Assassinated in Venezuela
On November 27, three leftist union leaders in the Venezuelan state of Aragua ? Richard Gallardo, Luis Hern?ndez and Carlos Requena ? were gunned down by an assassin. The murder came hours after the unionists had led a workers occupation of a Colombian-owned milk plant which had been brutally broken up by state police. All three were leaders of the UNT (National Workers Union) and of the USI (Socialist Left Unity), a party which has opposed attempts by the government of Hugo Ch?vez to impose state control of labor, and has fought the rightist opposition backed by imperialism. They may have been murdered by assassins hired by the Colombian company, by elements connected to the police of outgoing state governor, a former Ch?vez ally, or by supporters of a current official of the governing United Socialist Party. In any case, despite Ch?vez? socialist rhetoric, the reality of the bourgeois Bolivarian ?revolution? in Venezuela today is that leftist unionists are murdered while the forces of capitalist state repression back up the bosses. While many leftists have called on the Ch?vez government to investigate, Trotskyists call for organizing workers defense guards and imposing workers control of production. Venezuela today is stuck at a crossroads. Building a Bolshevik-type workers party based on Trotsky?s program of permanent revolution is key.

What Would a Coalition Government Mean for NAFTA and the SPP?
A Liberal-NDP coalition should be given a chance to govern. It could also be used to further press for renegotiating NAFTA, and could finally lead to a parliamentary debate on the Security and Prosperity Partnership (SPP) of North America.

Support the Good Time Bill and Push for Change in the Federal Prison System!
Americans inside US federal prisons have had no prospect of early release for decades thanks to the Sentencing Reform Act of 1984, which abolished federal parole. Since the early 1980's federal prisons have become increasingly crowded. No provision has been made to decrease the burden to the federal prison system and the expense to the American taxpayer, and there is no incentive for prisoners to work towards changing their behavior while they are incarcerated - no amount of rehabilitation or good behavior will, under the current rules, bring any of the over 200,000 people in the federal system home to be reunited with loved ones and community.

The Bailout Intensifies
Even through its muffled language, it was obvious that the typically non-alarmist New York Times was having trouble digesting the latest government announcements. On November 26, the Treasury and Fed revealed it would spend 800 billion more tax dollars towards new "lending" programs. That day, the Times concluded that the government was "sending a message that they will print as much money as needed to revive the crippled banking system."[!]

Later in the article we learn that "the government has assumed at least $7 trillion [!!] in direct and indirect financial obligations in the form of Wall Street bailouts, emergency lending and government guarantees on bank deposits, inter-bank loans and home mortgages." The term "blank check" doesn't begin to describe the vast amounts being tossed about.
