Don't drink the uranium
Havasu Falls, Grand Canyon On July 21, 2009, Obama Interior Secretary Ken Salazar announced a two year "time out" on new uranium mining claims on federal land near the Grand Canyon, in response, it seemed, to the protest of environmentalists, and, Native Americans, who still suffer cancers and other illnesses at rates many times higher than the general population, consequent to uranium mining on or near tribal lands. But the "time out" is straight out of Orwell's 1984, because new claims are not the issue. Over 10,000 claims have been staked on the edge of the Grand Canyon since 2006, and if 1% of them became mines, thirty million people's water supply would be endangered.

Feminism is needed more than ever
Just received a Washington Green Party eletter with an article dismissing "Feminism" as an outdated term. Defining feminism is up to women who know the pain of sexism without relief, as it is up to oppressed to be able to define their dealings with dominator. Sexism harms all life as do all forms of oppression. We must all work to end sexism so well utilized by freetrade ecocidal, femicidal and genocidal profiteering.

Considerations about the Anarchist Programme
During the last seventy years anarchism has seen itself reduced in almost all the world to a minimal expression, save notable exceptions which have still retained a certain weight, until the beginning of the decade of 1970 (Uruguay is the most notable case in South America), which had, with highs and lows, a certain continuity, as in the Spanish case. Very many factors contributed to its decline and it is not the case, in this article, to evaluate the factors which contributed to this. The truth is that, during this epoch, the majority of libertarian expressions, reduced to a minimal expression, saw themselves limited in their radius of action to propaganda. In such a way, large organisations of libertarian character were reduced to end converted into affinity groups or collectives, which, in one or another way, kept the flame alight by means of a publication or some other form of divulgence.

Help Stop the Portland Water Treatment Plant!! Call City Commissioners TODAY!
Everyone who drinks Portland city water from the Bull Run Watershed and appreciates the lack of flouridation and chemicals should call City Council members and express opposition to the building of a new water treatment plant.

At the very least the vote should be delayed by a month to allow folks a chance to understand the issues and speak up to the city council.

Treating Bull Run water will mean LESS protection for the watershed, and higher water rates (these have already been raised 18% to start raising funds for this project). Paying for treating water for cryptosporidium with chemicals when uv light does the same thing makes no cents. There is no reason to be starting up such an expensive project right now when we don't have cryptosporidium in the Bull Run water supply.

Please call the following council members before Wednesday's 9:30 am council meeting and let them know you oppose the building of a waste treatment plant in Portland and that the hearing about this should be delayed at least a month.

The Democrats vs. Public Education
Public education in the United States is under heavy attack. And because a so-called "progressive" President is leading the charge, many education activists have been lulled to sleep while on lookout duty.

Obama recently announced his "race to the top" program to "reform" education. Much like Bush's No Child Left Behind, Obama's plan represents progress for education in name only.

For the Iranian workers, only one solution: the class struggle !
The brutal repression of street demonstrations that have hit Tehran and the larger cities shows the determination of the Iranian government's Ahmadinejad not to tolerate any questioning of his political power. Accused of electoral fraud, the supporters of Ayatollah Khamenei and the outgoing president have responded with arrests, beatings and shootings; the police, the Pasdaran, and Basji volunteers headed by the Pasdaran are the instruments of the current repression.

Obama Snubs Africa, Then African Americans
Many people believed that after Bush had left the White House, rampant arrogance combined with stunning hypocrisy had also gone. Events have proven otherwise. A recent speech delivered in Africa — and one later directed specifically at African Americans — carried with them all the baggage of the Bush years, to the extent that one could safely claim that absolutely nothing had changed. And although Obama is able to give a more compassionate and intelligent speech than was possible with Bush, the essence of their policies is identical. Both Africans and African Americans can expect no help from the U.S. government in addressing their serious and specific grievances, themselves the result of past and current U.S. government policy. Instead, both were given the same solution: if you want help, help yourselves, "no excuses."

Learning from Card Check's Death
Maybe you didn't hear the news: Card Check — the key provision of the Employee Free Choice Act — is dead. You might not have gotten the message because U.S. labor "leaders" are remarkably silent on the issue. Not a peep.

The media, however, has the story right: the Democrats are now officially seeking a compromise, one that strips the bill of its essence — the right for workers to start a union by stating their intention to do so.

So why are most union leaders so quiet? No one likes to talk about their blunders, especially the colossal type. The defeat of Card Check is a mighty blow to labor, and admitting that your strategy failed to achieve it may cause others to question your authority.

The worst nuclear accident in U.S. history: July 16, 1979, Navajo Reservation
Navajo Reervation. July 16th, 2009, marked the 30th anniversary of the worst nuclear accident in U.S. history, when, at 5:00 A.M., 1100 tons of uranium mining tailings, and 100 million gallons of radioactive water burst through United Nuclear's earthen dam, into the Rio Puerco, at a uranium mine in Church Rock, New Mexico, on the Navajo Reservation. Today, the Navajo Nation remains under toxic siege, by coal mining, uranium mining, and coal-fired power, even though an EPA doc already suggests that the entire reservation is a Superfund site. The Navajo Tribal Council, in 2005, passed a uranium mining ban, the Diné Natural Resources Protection Act, and thus won a Nuclear Free Future Award, but the ban has been under pressure ever since, and uranium mining claims now surround the Navajo Reservation like an advancing army.

Arnold Schwarzenegger calls for "shared sacrifice" in California State budget cuts. But who is he willing to sacrifice? Children who will go without health care, young pregnant women who will not receive counseling, working moms, students depending on state sponsored college scholarships, and people with disabilities, Alzheimer's, mental illness, and HIV/AIDS. And who is to too big to sacrifice? Exxon-Mobil, Chevron, Shell, Conoco-Pillips, and BP. The Governor and California Republicans adamantly insist that the oil and natural gas companies will pay no severance tax for the privilege of extracting oil and natural gas that belongs to Californians, even as the State goes $25 million deeper into high interest debt every day.
