The larger goal of buying local is economic transformation. We want to create an economy that is woven together with sustainable environmental practices and social values. The good news is that this transformation will begin at the local level and conscious consumption is one of the key components driving this change. Local philanthropy, including supporting the many fundraisers for non-profits and community organizations, is another key component. Supporting locally-owned banks is another. Buying directly from a small farm or participating in Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) is another. Setting up bartering exchanges is another. All these actions contribute to transforming our local economies.
If the census is going create lots of jobs for people that are out of work, then why not maximize that opportunity (for lack of the alternatives being extended to the un/underemployed) by waiting for somebody to come to your door?
It's difficult to understand a subject when those explaining it are motivated not by truth, but profit. In the case of health care, both Democrats and Republicans have huge financial incentives to obscure, mislead, or lie. Instead of common sense and honesty directing the debate, bags of money facilitate the conversation, funneled in from the health care industry via lobbyists into Congressmen's pockets. This is the real reason that Obama's "health care summit" was full of free-market jargon, staged debate and fake rage.
The Alberta (grocery)co-op is currently run with a heirarchical structure, with management having almost complete control and the ability to fire anyone for no reason.

Please research global concerns that US is using HAARP and sonar weapons to cause earthquakes and tsunamis, including the major one in Chili with tsunami warnings across southern Pacific of South American coastlines and Pacific Islands. Is this to terrorize Portlanders on three major fault lines and exploit fears/apathy/aid for profits in credit/finance, public and private militaries, prison, surveillance, disaster capitalism? When similar threats or actual attacks on other countries or parts of the US were made, international agreements led to more profits and centralized power.

An observation from someone who started watching TV regularly a few months ago ...
In Washington each new day brings a fresh call to "reform entitlement programs" — Social Security, Medicare, etc., (in Congress, the word "reform" now means to eliminate, or drastically reduce). Tackling Social Security has been on the to-do list of the corporate elite for years, and they're not waiting any longer. After years of promoting this cause, conservative think tanks have now garnered solid support from the political establishment as a whole, which includes the Republican and Democratic parties.
government's duty is to protect the people. it is not to put their health at risk.
I-HOW TO SPOT THEIR PEOPLE:
It is significantly more difficult to detect police spies in the flesh, than in a vehicle laden with tradecraft, but it can however be done. There are four ways I know of to accomplish this. They are verbally, emotionally, behaviorally and visually.

Joe Stack's frustration with the IRS. (Joe was the guy who crashed his plane into the IRS building recently.)
Stephen Janis builds his tale, "This Dream Called Death," in one bone-chilling scene after another, with a writing style that suits the genre. His descriptions of the city of Balaise are first rate. As the tension escalates, the character of the narrator evolves, too, into a much more sympathetic figure. Janis takes you for a ride into a history, a nightmare, which I fear, may be only one more 9/11 incident away from becoming our reality!
The Obama administration is considering banning major pain medications. Those of us who are sick and or live with chronic pain are already paying the price for this hysteria. When the war on drugs goes as far to condemn those sick with cancer or AIDS to suffer physically on top of facing death it becomes clear that we are a mentally disturbed nation.

As democratic socialists, we condemn the act of terrorism carried out by Joseph Andrew Stack today in Austin, Texas. Terrorism will do nothing to solve the mounting social and economic problems faced by working people in the United States.
As we move into a fresh political climate as a country and voting body we see a shift from realizing significant problems with the two major parties, yet never really doing much about it, to many taking a stand with their voting power. There was a surge in popular support for a break from the status quo and in 2006 and 2008 people opted for a real change expecting commensurate results. That was a shift from where the right had taken us to what many hoped was something new. Now with many frustrated by the lack of progress and others with the direction another groundswell of popular support for a divergence is underway.
Going postal is a symptom of a society run by sociopaths.
An Austin, Texas, resident with an apparent grudge against the IRS set his house on fire today and then crashed a small plane into a building housing an IRS office with nearly 200 employees. The pilot was identified as Joseph Andrew Stack, 53. Two people were injured and one person was missing, local officials said. There were no reported deaths. A message on a Web site registered to Stack appears to be a suicide note.
Pervasive political propaganda uses a national unemployment rate of about 10 percent; in fact, it is much, much higher for lower income people, men, and people of color - more like a Great Depression for them.

"The profit system has hit an historic dead-end and this gridlock is a result of deep trends to do with the decline in capitalism as a mode of social production (falling wages and profits and the concomitant explosion in financial speculation and debts).
Widespread poverty and human misery is now seen on a massive scale in the so-called developed world. Some 40 million Americans, for example, are subsisting on food stamps. The distinction between "developed" and "developing" economies (always a myth anyway) is blurred. The ranks of the world's long-suffering poor are swelled with dispossessed blue and white-collar workers and their families from across the US and Europe. Together more than ever, they stand shut out from those gated havens of obscene wealth for a global minority."

Some cancer is too aggressive even for chemotherapy. The US political system is infected with such a disease; and we may be witnessing the first death spasms. In a country ravaged by war and economic crisis, with tens of millions of people suffering, politicians are capable of doing absolutely nothing to help ordinary people. The only two "achievements" of the Democrat's super majority in the Senate — over the course of five months — were an ineffectual stimulus package and a "surge" of troops in Afghanistan.

This piece has an interesting take on the issues we face and it at least gives the best broad overview of our present situation. Agree or not, looking at the history and the pitfalls of the present day helps map out a path to progress.
Yet another demonstration on the steps of the justice center, yet another march to city hall, same cast of characters. It's official: the Democrats are coming after Social Security and Medicare. How refreshing that all the backroom scheming and political conspiring is finally out in the open. Before, the corporate elite had been having this conversation in private, via right-wing think tanks and business journals. Now, mainstream media is promoting these ideas, including the Democrat's media mouthpiece — The New York Times.
In a three-page editorial, entitled The Truth about the Deficit, The New York Times gives its solution to the country's debt problems. The main idea is summed up here:
Important official Dept. of Energy meeting to take public comments on cleanup at the Hanford Nuclear Reservation in eastern Washington on the Columbia River. Wednesday, February 10 at the Lloyd Center Red Lion Hotel, across the street from the Lloyd Center, 6 to 10 p.m.
The ideology of globalization is deeply embedded in the corporate structure, mass media, government, as well as in the whole educational system. Together they are working to shape the minds of the next generation. Students at all levels are being indoctrinated to conform to universal values and standards. Under a new global order, there is no room for nationalism or individuality.
My interest in Angola is as both a paradigm of the Southern transformation of plantations into prisons and as a prototype for what we now call the prison industrial complex. Many old plantations in the South became prisons after the Civil War. Angela Y. Davis traces the initial rise of the penitentiary system to the abolition of slavery, writing: "in the immediate aftermath of slavery, the southern states hastened to develop a criminal justice system that could legally restrict the possibilities of freedom for the newly released slaves."
At first glance it appeared there was a typo in the headlines. The national media reported that, in January, another 20,000 more jobs were lost. Somehow, the unemployment rate dropped, from 10 percent to 9.7 percent. Nobody thought this paradox was worth explaining; instead, the media's attitude was "more good news" about the economy.
But there was other evidence of an obliterated job market hiding behind the cheerful headlines. After revising the employment numbers in 2009, The New York Times reported, "... the economy lost 150,000 jobs in December, far more than the 85,000 initially reported." Overall in 2009, the adjusted numbers showed an additional "... 1.36 million fewer jobs... " (February 5, 2010).
