Health Care Battle Ends; War on Social Security Begins
Drunk with success over their Health Care bill passing, the Democrats are now lusting after even greater conquests. With the celebratory hangover still aching, the Democrats lurch forward towards a hasty drive to "reform" Social Security.

The Social Security reform will no doubt resemble the health care reform, the details of which remain a mystery to most Americans. The essence of both policies will be based on one principle: reduce the debt of the United States by any means necessary.

No More Killings! No More Cops!
Today marks the 2 month anniversary of the execution of Aaron Campbell at his doorstep by officer Ronald Frashour. Aaron, a father of four, had been taking care of his brother Timothy who was slowly passing away from kidney failure, in the months prior to his death. Daily Aaron nursed him and kept his brother company at his bed side at OHSU. On January 29th Aarons brother passed. The intense grief and stress of months of slowly watching his brother fade led Aaron to a break down. Having no one else to turn to his girlfriend made a call to the Portland Police in hopes that they would calm Aaron; instead, officer Ronald Frashour murdered Aaron at his door step. Shooting him in back with his AR-15 assault riffle.

Now is the time for unity, rage and action against these armed thugs the police. Occupation in the middle east, the build up of military bases in Latin America and the occupation of Turtle Island (North America)under this murderous state brings pain and suffering to billions everyday. The racist henchmen of the empire have killed another homeless disabled man in our town. We must come together in opposition to the ongoing murders. The killings by the police in Portland are inextricably tied to the murders in Afghanistan, Iraq, Columbia and everywhere else this empire has its hand.

Defeat in Victory: the Democrat's Health Care Bill
What looks like a big victory for Obama and the Democrats may be their greatest undoing. It's true that the passage of Obama's health care bill represents a significant political victory for the Democrats. But sometimes a battle won could equal a lost war.

It's telling that Obama had so much trouble in getting his own party to pass the bill on a simple majority basis: the bill was so blatantly watered down with the corporate hose that anyone with their name attached to it feared future electoral doom.

Howard Beale died for your sins: the pitfalls of anticapitalism
Howard Beale is the fictional protagonist of Paddy Chayevsky's 1979 drama, Network. In this film, the Beale character, played by Peter Finch, is a network news anchorman who is slated to be retired by his network due to failing ratings. In the midst of a midlife crisis, Beale, his tv career coming to an end, which was the only focus of his life's energies, is plunged into a state of despondency. Having a nervous breakdown, he issues a surprise announcement in the middle of the news show that he will be closing his next and final appearance as anchorman by blowing his brains out on national television. His boss at the tv network decides that he is obviously deranged and should be yanked from the air, but by a curious chain of circumstances, the network decides instead to keep him on and he soon becomes annointed as "Howard Beale, the Mad Prophet of the Airwaves, denouncing the lies and hypocrisies of our times." All goes well for Beale in his new role as the host of a top-rated new prime time tv show with a subversive, anticorporate and antiestablishment message, for a time...

Why Teachers Unions Matter
Nowadays a newspaper cannot be opened — or a TV turned on — without one being subjected to anti-teacher misinformation. The anti-teacher hysteria looks diverse on the surface, but underneath, this public controversy seeks to dislodge teachers unions: the right-wing trashes teachers' unions outright, while the "liberal" media takes a more subtle, sophisticated approach, blaming the state of public education on "bad teachers" who must be fired and replaced. Both styles are the same in essence.

Verily, if the origin of the word 'holocaust' meant 'whole' + 'burning' then surely the history of the persecution and killing of pagans and various heretical sects would qualify to this nomenclature? After all, how many supposed witches, were tortured and/or burned over the centuries? How many believers in the 'wrong' religions or denominations, according to those fanatics who thought themselves within 'thee' singularly right religion, were persecuted and murdered? We don't know any kind of exact number but it is a frightening reality to behold nevertheless.

Native History which gets lost
The point of sharing this is that the past teaches us things which are eternally relevant. What we call "primitive" we do always at our own detriment. For what its worth, simplicity is sometimes more powerful and can over come the complicated. What we are taught to value, we are taught to value it like an ideology. When the planet changes around us by our own "technology" we cherish, the lesson we least want to hear is that it is our belief in the technology, not the object itself which brings harm.

The Fight to Save Public Education
March 4 was historic. It will be remembered as the day that people began to fight back against the destruction of public education. The student and teacher led offensive took place in cities across the country; teachers, students and school workers demonstrated and marched, showcasing the aggressive methods of the struggle. San Francisco led the way with the biggest numbers. As many as 15,000 people, mostly students, teachers and social service workers attended a Civic Center rally organized by the three teachers unions and the San Francisco Labor Council.

This can only be the beginning. The war on public education has been carefully planned for years, orchestrated by corporate interests and implemented by Republicans and Democrats alike.
