Obama Nudges Syria Toward Regional War
Humanitarian catastrophes are surprisingly easy to predict. Take Syria for instance. Like Iraq, Syria has a complex mix of ethnicity and religion, with a long history of conflict. Enter the United States, who comes with guns and cash that it doles out to certain ethnic/religious groups, and not to others. The ensuing bloodbath is not a surprise, but a strategic plan to dismember the Syrian government.

Will Unions Fight Fiscal Cliff Cuts to Medicare and Social Security?
With pro-Obama election posters still visible in most union halls across the country, the President has already taken steps towards selling out not only labor unions (again) but all working people. But this isn't the "ordinary" sellout that working people have come to expect from Democrats — this is an attack of historic proportions.

Will the Democrats Tax the Rich to Avoid the Fiscal Cliff?
Literally the day after the election a sudden "urgency" gripped the nation: the imminent danger of the so-called "fiscal cliff" — the national automatic tax increases and spending cuts due in January. The media screamed that the suddenly approaching fiscal cliff would trigger a recession, forcing Democrats and Republicans to consider a "grand bargain" budget deal to avoid disaster.

Occupy Oakland RIP (10/10/11-10/25/12)
Occupy Oakland emerged out of Occupy Wall Street and then went beyond it. The encampment was an on-going experiment in democracy and anti-capitalist community which was up against Oakland City Hall physically and politically. When Oscar Grant Plaza was raided on 10/25/11, Occupy Oakland fought back. The Oakland General Strike, the West Coast Port shutdowns, the on-going marches, barbeques, housing occupations and political debate changed peoples' lives.
This is a eulogy for that movement and that moment.

Mitt Romney Didn’t Rationally Win the First Debate At All
From an intellectual and rational position Romney lost. The debate was too much on technical matters most Americans don't much understand that well; and therefore were left groping to look for whatever impressions they could muster. Most people came to this debate to have their prejudices confirmed. Many venues of media, including alternative media, have played both candidate as sinner and saint—to be either hated or loved. What we got instead was a somewhat collegial discussion on issues the majority has too little interest in understanding because every topic of complexity can be skewed with bias. Where was the blood? Where was the slander and outrageous remarks that American people love to hate? Mitt Romney comes off sounding like some compassion person who has lived and worked in the Peace Corps. But Romney's business background as real decision practice insinuates the opposite of what he projects as a political debater.
