Six Social Security FACTS
A recent "Motley Fool" post ("Six Social Security Myths", March 8, 2004, portland.indymedia) presented a picture of the problems facing Social Security that approached those problems only from the point of view of middle-to-upper income people. That is natural for the Motley Fool, but some of us from middle-to-lower income groups feel that our view should also be represented.

Safeway strike settles; tentative agreement at Powell's
The striking Safeway workers in California have ratified a new contract and will be returning to work. The union international's (predictable) take on the settlement can be found at  http://www.ufcw.org/hold_the_line/facts_and_news/scali_vote.cfm. The attached article gives a more critical perspective. In related news, Jobs with Justice reports that Powell's workers have reached a tentative agreement that preserves their health care coverage and includes 2% annual wage increases. Look for more coverage on this as it comes up for a ratification vote. Que vivan los trabajadores! Health care is a right, dammit!

It will be like March 20th 2001. What I mean by this is that there is nothing that will come out of a rally and march on the 20th except some liberally sore feet (hah!). Even the so-called "radical feeder march" is a fucking j-o-k-e.

As the pages of indymedia say, from the people that are out there, this is a yawn. This is not a reason to leave your homes and go rally with PPRC or the so-called radicals at wither Pioneer Square or the North Park Blocks.

Oil is evil!? How to change that erroneous view?
What if we had a forest of great commercial value and wood products companies were cutting it down as fast as they could? What if that forest were just about half gone and the cutting rate was accellerating? What if that forest could NEVER regrow, ever?

The world's petroleum reserves are that irreplacable forest. They are literally ancient forests and other biomass and we are permitting oil companies to "clearcut" them.

Petroleum is a resource of nature. It is natural. It is a very valuable gift from the earth. What is it going to take to wake up and notice what is going to happen as this valuable substance disappears from easy access and easy usability?

why we should rise up to reinstate aristide (add articles to thread)
Haiti was safe for American democracy. One of those who made it so was American Marine General Smedley Butler, who, after he retired, had second thoughts:

I helped make Mexico . . . safe for American oil interests in 1914. I helped make Haiti and Cuba a decent place for the National City Bank boys to collect revenues in. I helped in the raping of half a dozen Central American republics for the benefits of Wall Street. The record of racketeering is long. I helped purify Nicaragua for the international banking house of Brown Brothers in 1909-1912.

After speaking about his pacification work in the Dominican Republic, China and elsewhere, Butler said:

I suspected I was just part of a racket at the time. Now I am sure of it. Like all the members of the military profession, I never had a thought of my own until I left the service. My mental faculties remained in suspended animation while I obeyed the orders of higher-ups. This is typical ... in the military service.

In his memoirs, Butler compared himself unfavourably to Al Capone. His racketeering made Capone look like a piker, Butler said.

Mike Niman has been writing commentaries and columns and doing research on the effects of gov't policies for years, and is a professor at the University of Buffalo, so the issue of teachers being called terrorists strikes a chord with him. The Women of the Black Caucus
This is a letter to the women in the Black Caucus because their courage might yet provide us with a time to retrace and undo our sinful evil ways in Haiti. What the US has done there is a sin of such grievous magnitude, it is a assuming such a heavy karmic debt before the world and the continent of the Americas, that we will be paying and regretting it for generations to come. We have, in suicidal fashion, brought to our continental shores the genocidal psychopathic madness we unleashed upon a stunned world in Afghanistan and Iraq.

The role of international financial institutions in the destabilization of Haiti

Here's part of the recipe for destabilization and devastation which was applied to Haiti, concentrating on the role played by the IMF and other international financial institutions as willing accomplices to the exploitation of the nation at the hands of international capital and to the political destabilization accomplished through economic siege.

  1. Destroy any hope of self-sufficiency by forcing Structural Adjustment Programs on Haiti which predicate loans on the facilitation of foreign trade and investment. Some call it "liberalization", but a better term might be "pillage".
  2. Count on convenient military coup to overthrow populist reformer Aristide overwhelmingly elected to the presidency, who might challenge IMF "wisdom".
  3. Have this deposed president reinstated, suitably chastised and constrained to follow IMF dictates on trade policy.
  4. After the SAP's have been implemented with all their disastrous consequences, pull the rug out from under Haiti by withholding hundreds of millions of dollars of promised funds because the Bush administration claims that Aristide's government is in power because of voting irregularities.
  5. Have another coup, securing an even friendlier climate for business and capital.

Perhaps the above sounds a little oversimplified. If you want the details to make your own judgement on the antidemocratic and callous activities of the IMF/WB in Haiti , here's the whole story in excerpts from other media, independent and otherwise:

Reasons for Marriage Equality
Marriage equality would build on America's tradition of moving civil rights forward and erasing the inequities of the past. More than 10 nations already allow same-sex couples to get married or to enter federally recognized domestic partnerships. What's more, the fact that excluding same-sex couples from marriage has a long history in this country doesn't necessarily mean that this policy is in keeping with American values. The real tradition in this country has been to pass laws to safeguard the American people and to expand laws where they leave citizens unprotected, as well as done for voting rights and work place protections. It is also an American tradition to abandon discriminatory laws, even if they are popular - as were bans on interracial marriage and Jim Crow laws segregated the races in everyday life.
