"Rise Up Between The Lines" Video Online
Is "fighting terror" newspeak for suppressing dissent? Presented in this video is an analysis of a speech delivered by Bush Jr. with highlights of the numerous violations of civil rights and outright brutality perpetrated by the police in Sacramento, California during the protests of the WTO Agricultural Ministerial. As Bush says, "The world changed on September the 11th... and it's very important that the American people understand the change -- we are now a battleground."

Eugene and Nader try something different
Yesterday (Wednesday) post asked what time will protests in Eugene start and will protesters meet at Fed Building? Today (Thrusday) Justice Not War Coalition posts "Eugene antiwar action Saturday" where the word "protest" has been replaced by the term "practicing democracy" --- apparently following the Nader organization's Crawford, Texas "NO REPUBLI-CRAT WAR RALLY" with "entertainment, music, food and fun for the whole family" --- but adding neighborhood action to the Crawford concept.

my radio says capitalism is about to collapse
I sat down to eat breakfast -- er, that is, lunch, I guess -- this afternoon, and turned on the radio, and pointed the rather vague tuning apparatus to about 91 FM, and I didn't know which station I'd gotten. Somebody was talking about how listeners were probably out of work. It could have been OPB, KBOO, or even maybe some commercial DJ. Then the guy started talking about networking and revolution, and I knew it was KBOO. So far so good. Then another guy jumped in, and they went back and forth about capitalism and very quickly concluded (between each other) that capitalism wasn't just a big problem, but that it was COLLAPSING UNDER ITS OWN WEIGHT and was soon to be no more. Then they played a reggae song about Babylon coming down.

The Success of Security Culture
Sorry for the misleading title, but you know I had to do it. Security culture, and the fear that it invokes, is just another tool that power uses to keep truth down. "That makes no sense", you retort. Or, more aptly, "shut the fuck up, you are a cop."

That is not true, but it is true that practicing extreme security culture only helps the police. Think about it. What is one of the problems that we currently have in the radical "community"? LACK OF COMMUNITY. Why? Because we have to be so secure that we cannot even talk to each other.

We have been taught that we cannot talk about what we are currently doing, what we have done, or the things we think or feel...becasue that might help the authorities. Security Culture has a place, but it isnt the one that everyone puts it in.

Searching for an ‘historical Jesus' Part 1 : What is history?
Each Easter, I have established a tradition of writing critical commentaries on the holiday season, and this Easter is no different. My theme for this year is the 'search for the historical Jesus'. In part one, I will lay the ground work for the actual search by exploring the question 'what is history?'

Searching for an ‘historical Jesus' Part 2 : Gospels as Historical Sources
In part one of this discussion I suggested that the 'search for the historical Jesus' figure was actually a political battle, and thus riddled with bad scholarship and rhetorical stunts, for in politics all that matters is 'winning' and thus political arguments such as those used by the Christian apologists and their opponents are less concerned with the requirements of scholarship and instead framed to convince and thus 'win'. In this section I examine the complexities of the gospel writings, which demonstrates that the documents were produced by evangelists who were attempting to spin doctor the Christ story.

Searching for an ‘historical Jesus' Part 3 : The argument from embarrassment
In part one of this piece I described an ongoing feud between those who debunk the existence of an historical Christ figure (the man behind the mythology) and religious ideologues whose agenda is to prove that the myth is history. Such Christian apologists sometimes resort to the historical method called 'the argument from embarrassment' (always employing the method against sources outside the church documents). If this method is applied impartially, using it to examine church documents as well, the result is a convincing portrait of an historical Christ figure.

There seems to be never no end to christian's discussion of abstinence. In fact, of all society they seem to often be the most obsessed. Have you ever watched 7th Heaven. In effort to make hay with the issue, here is a brief essay written by Amadeus Sorensen on the topic.

Something is brewing with the fascists and it's not good! Beware!!
There has been too much good news for the good guys this week. Remember what happens when the good guys start getting too many points on our side: the devils in the White House/Langley/boardrooms punish us with one of their more virulently violent reactions. We have to be prepared for some really outlandish freaky nasty move from them soon and no later than the anniversary of Hitler's birthday in one month (because of the admiration they have for him from Bush on down).

WHERE THE CANDIDATES STAND ON THE ISSUE OF IRAQ
As March 20 fast approaches, politicos are trying to dope out what the effect will be on whatever is left of the primary elections --- and that includes all of the Oregon primary on May 18 --- and also on the effect of what may become a season of activism that is only beginning with the March 20 protests. In that context, I went around the web sites to find out, with varying success, WHERE THE CANDIDATES STAND ON THE ISSUE OF IRAQ. integral psychology as tool for understanding
Philosopher Ken Wilber has been a major contributor to the field of "integral psychology," sometimes referred to as "humanist and transpersonal psychology." This school of thought emphasizes the notion that all human beings pass through identifiable stages that "integrate" or "build on" previous stages, and that these "stages" are in turn identifiable in the development of consciousness as a whole and the development of human history as a whole.

Mother sez: Improve the discourse on Indymedia to improve effectiveness of reporting
Mother is as guilty as anyone, but she vows to improve.

Folks, some of us are using really dumb persuasive techniques. Doing this does not help your position and often undermines it. This is in my attention especially because of the frequent use of ad hominem techniques in these pages.

Logical argument is rarely taught in school. Only a few nerds get involved in debating. This is a situation that leads to being two particular problems: being easily manipulated by fallacious arguements, and using faulty argument to persuade others.

If our issues are important, and many of them are, we need to pay some attention to our responsibilities as independant reporters and give our issues the best possible presentation.
