Below are two articles I feel are an important contribution to the current situation in this country. I am a firm believer, due to real-deal, living personal experience with the agents of repression, in the right to defend oneself from harm.
Don't get it twisted: I'm NOT down with political adventurism, random attacks on people I disagree with politically, or public posturing with loaded weapons. But I also see that the progressive community is woefully unprepared for the increasing repression coming from the government and its right-wing allies; mostly due to its general unwillingness to face the issue realistically, practice good strategy, and promote self-preservation; especially amongst the youth. Remember, "freedom" is only a concern of the living!

Phil Busse has promised to speak out on important and complex international issues - unlike his rival in the Portland mayoral race, Jim Fracesconi, who last year voted against a proposed city council resolution that protested the Iraq war.
This sounds like encouraging news. The FBI has been smearing Tre with the 'T' word for years but never charged him as such. That could finally backfire. Stay strong Tre!
pull quote: "The Immigration and Refugee Board is scheduled to decide by May 31 whether Arrow is affiliated with the Earth Liberation Front, a group the FBI considers a terrorist organization responsible for scores of attacks on property over the past dozen years.
The board will also decide whether the ELF is a terrorist group, as the FBI asserts.
Arrow's defense attorney in immigration court, Negar Azmudeh, says Arrow's chances are good because American prosecutors have not specifically charged Arrow with terrorism."

Coming from Portland Oregon, it seems like the end of the world.
there is a story recounted by an "unidentified foreign reporter" - and alternately by "Berg's friends" - that Berg was arrested in Mosul by Iraqi police.
a slightly modified version of the story goes that Berg was held only *briefly* by Iraqi police, and then turned over almost immediately to the U.S. military where he spent his detention. [U.S. occupation authorities will not comment on this version . . . ]
Dan Senor, spokesman for the occupation authority, claims that Berg was held exclusively by Iraqi police - not at all by the U.S. military or coalition - and also flatly contradicts and denies the claims of Berg's family that U.S. consular officials told them Nick Berg was in U.S. military custody (not being held by Iraqi police).
In the version recounted by "unidentified foreign reporter", Nick Berg 'jokingly' tells him:
"You wanna hear something funny? I got arrested in Mosul when the police asked me for I.D. I showed them my U.S. passport with the Jewish name and the Israeli stamp and I guess they figured I was a spy."
ha, ha, ha . . .
Who should profit and who should not from the suffering of Jesus. Or from humanity for that matter?
Sorry for the length of this but I felt this little info-tisement needed a point by point response, the original re-posted text appears are preceeded by > and end in <
Portland should be a leader in it's support of local businesses and that leadership should START in Pioneer Courthouse Square! Say NO to Starbucks expansion plans and say YES to require local preference!
A snotty WW column listed Starbucks on 7 corners a "winner" for receiving "free publicity" after "anti-corporate monkey-wrenchers tossed makeshift molotov cocktails."
If you are one of the many people who have decided not to support Starbucks then you'll want to make sure not to patronize Seattle's best Coffee.
Rumsfeld's triumphant visit to the Badlands
The defense of Cuba against US-Policy toward CUBA is quickly becoming a crucial issue !!! Bush's recently approved tough measures against Cuba mark a new phase of agressive efforts to overthrow the Cuba´s legitimate Government.
Steps that will lead to an invasion -- as Bush and his accomplices have done with Afghanistan, Iraq and Haiti !!!
The "Commission for Assistance to a Free Cuba" has issued a 50 page report -- the Bush administration has chosen to administer the policies outlined in this report. A report that details abuses by Cuba -- this report is Orwellian in that it could actually be the condemation of the current Bush administration -- not Cuba !!!
Quoting directly from this report, "The United States rejects the continuation of a communist dictatorship in Cuba ..."

I don't understand why people are suddenly so upset and confused about the routine torture of prisoners in Iraq. Doesn't anyone remember that we've been acting this way for years? Here's a piece I posted over on ZNet interactive in the early say of the First Idiot's reelection campaign war on humanity.
I hate to beat a dead horse, but...

...we are faced with the oddest antiwar movement. It has received much favorable coverage in the media. And as for individual opponents of the war getting into the media, consider the case of [anti-war activist] Scott Ritter. Now, in Part 2: The Source of the Claim that Iraq had Nuclear Weapons was... When I first read about chemtrails a year or two ago, I was extremely skeptical. But then I started seeing them myself, and now the last few weeks we have been sprayed HEAVILY, almost daily. The trails are so obvious there is no doubt- What the FUCK are they spraying in the skies?
These photos show trails in different stages
I have noticed that activists and the like are increasingly afraid of people who are Christians. Should we fear religion or attempt to understand the context in which individuals and governments exploit and use it?

An Internet hate group called "Free Republic" targeted Nick Berg's father and company on an enemies list two weeks before the son was detained by Iraqi police. The son was subsequently kidnapped and beheaded, allegedly by Islamic terrorists.
The mainstream media have done their usual public disservice through an endoresement process that lacks research, credibilty, and fairness. So if you have gone to the trouble of registering to vote and want to consider the Fenbar endorsements... read on!
Many years ago, I was so innocent I still considered it possible that we could become the humane and reasonable America so many members of my generation used to dream of.
According to most polls, about 50% of Americans continue to look favorably upon President Bush. For heaven's sake, why?? For the answer, read on.
Apparently, I am in the middle of a controversy regarding the brutal murder of Nick Berg by the Islamofascist terrorist b*st*rds.
I received the following FReepmail today from a salon.com reporter and spoke to him off the record. I will either call him back on the record or he can use my comments here on the record.

Should we, the American public, tolerate secret tortures by the Bush administration?
John Kerry wildly pumping his fist as George W. Bush seethed with anger. At Bush's side stood his family. Jeb, who unlike four years ago, this time, failed to deliver the state of Florida to his brother's electorate column. Barbara, his mom, wearing her trademark pearls and gently wiping the tears from her son's face. Laura his wife of 27 years was soothing the wrinkles on his forehead; while his father, the elder Bush, stoically declared: "You should have gotten out of Iraq when you had the chance."
The Milgram experiment was a scientific experiment of social psychology described by Yale University psychologist Stanley Milgram in his 1974 book Obedience to Authority: An Experimental View. It was intended to measure the willingness of a subject to obey an authority who instructs the subject to do something that may conflict with the subject's personal conscience.
Does anyone know if there is independent, established evidence of a link between Israel and the latest Iraq torture scandal?
Words have been bandied about.....words which have an ominous sound to them. I have heard others use the word Vietnam, or quagmire. I have not, however heard anyone speak the word which i fear more. It is the word Gulag.

Protest. To rail against, to not be "for", to stand up to injustice, to take back our rights, etc etc. What exactly does protest look like now? I havent been to a PPRC rally for quite some time, but I would imagine they are about thirty people marching on the sidewalk still, with the police quite present.
I have been to some recent protests that were to be more "radical." But how radical can a protest be? It seems that the accepted view of a protest is to walk in circles around the city while the cops shove you and laugh. It just doesnt seem to add up that the way we protest and how we protest will EVER actually change things.
The chain of commands is well-defined
I was biking through the MLK Zone today, across the bridge that goes over I-84. I barely registered that the hispanic workers who have hung out there for years, waiting to get picked up for day work, were gone.
I want to make a point regarding the torture, and hopefully generate an interesting debate about the topic.
Hi! Seems like this is a point of view that deserves wide circulation. It seems obvious that the poor fools in the pictures at the Iraqi prison were just following orders of the CIA operatives, who were using these methods to make the prisoners confess where were the non-existent WMD. My question is how long will it take the American people to realize the war is lost? My prediction is that the current administration will arrange to have another "terrorist attack" shortly before the election. The Reichstag is about to burn once again! How can all this be happening when we are so on the verge of love? Best regards! DA!

I am just curious if anyone here is concerned about the porn shop that is going in across from Ockley Green Middle school in North Portland? I see so many angry posts about the Starbucks in SE, but I think this merits more anger from Portland citizens...

The closest thing to a Utopian society I have been in is the aftermath of major earthquakes. For a brief moment, people are humbled, and there is a thankfulness for life, itself. Possessions are seen as transitory in this light. The homeless are not arrested, police seem to disappear...
just some thoughts.
