Salmon Crisis: "Unprecedented Collapse"
Chinook Salmon Yesterday, an internal memo leaked out of the offices of the Pacific Fishery Management Council and into the hands of the press. The story outlined in that memo is horrific: The Chinook salmon of California's central valley, and indeed the salmon populations all up and down the west coast, are crashing. They are in "precipitous decline."

Where else on earth could you live near a ocean, active volcanoes, conifer rain forests, high desert, marsh lands, sea estuaries, fertile valleys, high mountain glaciers and so much more. Cascadia is a place of earth, water and fire. It is a place whose geology is new, old and ever forming. Plant life here is diverse and often unique in the world. Many plants have adapted to wide swaths of this land, others are to be found in areas so small that they are in danger of disappearing off the earth. I love this place!

Yes this is going to be rough. But with the right frame of mind, the right actions, the right cooperation. We will get through this and it can be glorious! As the Amerikan Empire and the Global Empire of Exploitation melts before our eyes we could make something better. We need to be careful because Bush and his fascist elite do plan to impose martial law and use Blackwater or other mercenaries to do their bidding (to place the slave collar and fetters on our necks, hands and ancles). But if you (we) build a network now with friends, family, co-works, neighbors and others and PROTECT and GUARD farmable land and steward the Commons. Then we may for the first time be free from this illusion of consumption and create something amazing. A land where people are empowered via consensus building processes and to embrace our relationship with Nature in a way that would make all our most ancient ancestors proud.

U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is taking public comments on the proposed channel modification (dredging) project that would be required to accomodate the LNG import tankers proposed for Coos Bay by the Jordan Cove Energy Project terminal. One certainty (denied by JCEP) is that the constant dredging would result in a steady decline and absence of eelgrass ecosystem from the bay, this loss of eelgrass would lower the fishery's productivity as eelgrass is the base of the estuary food pyramid. This effects seals, birds, dolphins, people, etc..

Fight the NTIA (analog to digital TV) FRAUD with knowledge !!
A local company has been contracted by the US Government to facilitate massive fraud on the American public, in the forced move from analog to digital TV. This topic was raised in December, with few responses, but since the kick-off was 1/1/08, maybe people are more interested.

The Wikipedia bit on NTIA is below...notice that the person running it is a Bush appointee from 2006...this program is not designed with the interests of America in mind. Think DLJ, EPA, Dept. of the Interior...you get the drift...

Read the official Government description of the program, and notice the easy-outs that are written into the program, which are sure to guarantee a clusterfuck that will make Hurricane Katrina seem like small change!!

Notice in the program description below...
* the narrow window for people to apply for the program,
* the restrictions and minimal qualifications placed on retailers,
* the qualification of the features of the converter boxes,
* the random limit of the # of coupons to just 2 per household,
* the shirking of responsibility for the proper function of the converter boxes by the Federal gov't...and the list goes on and on...

The Bush Administration is out to destroy this country, for a profit, and that should be the lens through which people see this and any program these "geniuses" foist on the country!

Will provide more info later...

Mystery Gas Sickens Students, No One Will Say What it Was
Last Monday, St Helens High School was evacuated after students and faculty noticed a strong odor, and some fell ill. Nearby, people at the local Safeway store, and at the bank, also became ill. Several people had to be treated for nausea, dizziness, burning of skin and eyes, and respiratory complaints. After some initial speculation that it was a natural gas leak, it was finally determined that it was, instead, a mystery. There was no leak anywhere on the school grounds, and chemical sniffers detected no natural gas. What was it, then??? Officials are mum.

SB 329 - Healthcare for All or insurance company subsidy?
The Oregon Health Fund Board, created by SB 329 in the last legislative session, is moving forward with finding solutions to the lack of access to health care for nearly one in five Oregonians many of whom are children. All the Oregon Health Fund Board meetings are held during the work week making it difficult for working stiffs to attend. However, we can write letters to the board members and let them know what kind of health care system we want. Though the Massachusetts's system of mandatory health insurance has not been a big success the Oregon Health Fund Board is leaning towards that model. We need to let them know that we want a universal single-payer system. Mandatory health insurance means funneling tax-payer monies into for-profit insurance companies. Just say no! We want a not-for-profit system of health care. No shareholders standing between you and your doctor. Speak up now! Otherwise, the solutions they present to the next legislative session you may not be happy with. Here is the link to the Oregon Health Fund Board web site -  http://healthfundboard.oregon.gov.
