White CEO of Republican Think Tank Refuses to Let Black Subordinate Run for Lt. Governor o
Here's the actual e-mail from Joseph Bast, the CEO of a Republican think tank in Chicago, the Heartland Institute, in which he explains why he has stopped his employee, the former Mayor of Maywood, Ill., an all-black suburb, from running for Lieutenant Governor. This was sent to other Republican insiders yesterday morning.
Note the hypocrisy -- Conner ran for Cook County Assessor in 2006 and netted 250,000 votes. He was an employee of Heartland then too.
Guess these low-lifes at Heartland don't want a black man to be one of the leaders of the Illinois GOP.

Name the Sea Lions
C586, Some of the sea lions on the hit list (the list of animals targeted for death by the state) have names that have been given to them by people who love them. But many do not. We do not want to refer to them by the numbered brands that have been inhumanely seared into their backs for the purpose of identifying them for death. Instead, we need a respectful way to refer to these beings. We are asking for help from the community in coming up with names, rather than numbers.

A sea lion branded C643 was executed by the state as he lay immobilized in a tiny crate, a short distance from his native waters in the Columbia. Two others were also trapped in the "infallible" killer traps, and are scheduled to be shipped off to a life of captivity in a Chicago zoo.

The Obama administration unveils its $1 trillion plan to buy toxic assets from banks and restore the financial system. But should we return to the way it was? We speak with Chicago lawyer Thomas Geoghegan about his new Harper's Magazine cover story, "Infinite Debt: How Unlimited Interest Rates Destroyed the Economy." Geoghegan writes, "We dismantled the most ancient of human laws, the law against usury, which had existed in some form in every civilization from the time of the Babylonian Empire to the end of Jimmy Carter's term." Lawmakers and public officials in California, Ohio, South Carolina, Missouri, Washington and other states are attempting to crack down on the controversial practice known as payday lending. Payday loans are short term loans or cash advances secured by a post-dated check. The annual interest rate for these loans can be as high as 400 percent - ten times the highest credit card rates. It’s Time to Grow Again! Let Hemp Loose.-Production buried by past needed to strengthen US
"Hemp is anti-microbial and highly resistant to insects. It NEVER requires the use of herbicides, pesticides or chemical fertilizers.
Hemp, unlike cotton, does not deplete the soil of nutrients. This makes it cheaper to produce, eliminates groundwater pollution due to pesticide run-off, and curtails farming community exposure to toxic and cancer-causing products.
Growing hemp reduces our dependence on petroleum products such as petrochemical fertilizers. Currently 15,000 lakes in the US are so contaminated by toxic agricultural runoff that NOTHING can live in them.
Hemp paper requires less chemical processing and can be whitened without producing dioxins. Unlike wood pulp paper, hemp does not harden, yellow, or crack with age. "......Boulder Hemp Initiative Project

Need your help monitoring sea lions
sea lions in Astoria last week Have a little free time during the week and want to spend it on the Columbia river? Sea Lion Defense Brigade are seeking volunteers to record any hazing, trapping, or killing of sea lions on the river. Any video recorded could go to protecting these creatures, if you're interested, this would be the time to help.

Sea Lion Defense Brigade is looking for people to monitor the government trapping sites intended to trap, relocate a few, and kill dozens of sea lions. The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) and the Washington Dept. of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) do not want people to witness or record these events.

The situation currently:

Fishermen and government employees are violently hazing the sea lions at the Bonneville Dam (40 miles east of Portland on I84) everyday. Two traps are set up by the dam and are visible from the Washington side of the Columbia River. Two California sea lions have already been put to death by lethal injection and another 83 are on the list of execution. Another trapping and branding site is in Astoria, OR.

Rising Tide's ELAW/Action Repotback
Cascadia Rising Tide (CRT) has been busy recently getting ready for the Spring and Summer "festivities" and decided to kick off the season down in Eugene at the annual Public Interest Environmental Law Conference (PIELC aka ELAW). ELAW is a conference, held at the University of Oregon every year around the beginning of March, that is packed full of workshops ranging from Direct Action101 to the ins and outs of suing the government on anything environmental. ELAW is the largest environmental law conference in the country, is totally free and tends to signify the beginning of the summer environmental activist season here in Cascadia. Due to these factors CRT decided to come out and spread the word about Climate Justice perspectives and make the event a little more fun and action oriented.

All the brass from the ODFW, WDFW, and Army Corps of Engineers are out at the dam at this very moment, frantically attempting to do advance damage control over possible public reaction to the news that the trapping and killing program has begun. So far, at least two sea lions are in state custody. It could be more, since officials are trying to be very tight lipped about this. But they've admitted to two. Given that more than 50 percent of the sea lions in their custody died last year, BEFORE they had permission to actually kill them, things are not looking good.

Protest the state-sanctioned killing of sea lions at Portland NOAA offices!
grassroots support for sea lions growing! Join us to protest!

Please Join Sea Lion Defense Brigade and In Defense of Animals for a demonstration to oppose the government plan to kill up to 425 protected California Sea Lions at the Bonneville Dam over the next five years. The killing has been authorized and while the appeal to the court decision brought by the Humane Society of the United States is still waiting to be heard in the 9th District Court, the sea lion hit list is in effect and sea lions may be getting trapped and shot at any moment.

What: Protest against state-sponsored killing of sea lions at the Bonneville Dam
When: Next Wednesday, March 11th, from 11am until 1pm,
Where: At the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) offices,
1201 NE Lloyd Blvd., Portland.

Signs will be provided, all you need to bring is yourself and some friends!

Getting shot for... eating?!
Its should be no surprise to anyone—sea lions eat fish—a mere 4% of the Spring run of Chinook Salmon at the Bonneville Dam according to government estimates. And for simply doing what they have evolved to do—eat—as many as 85 federally protected California sea lions who have been identified eating salmon below the dam, will be killed per year, for the next five years by Oregon and Washington Wildlife officials! Two sea lions are scheduled to be relocated from the wild to a life of permanent captivity. Alarmingly, permission has been granted to shoot the sea lions while in the water, and advocates fear sea lions will be mortally injured to swim off and suffer.
