Over 200 people gathered in northern Washington state this past Labor Day weekend to learn about the many uses of the fungal kingdom at the world's first Radical Mycology Convergence. For four days, people gathered from several countries and various cultural backgrounds to teach and learn together about mycoremediation, the use of fungi as a tool to help combat mass pollution and ecological degradation. In an age when so many human caused disasters are occurring throughout the world, the fungi are beginning to be seen as a strong option for tackling some of these great problems long thought impossible to solve.

Over the last two centuries capitalism has expanded food production on an enormous scale, but three decades ago it reached a limit which it has been unable to overcome through the methods used so far. We put the different aspects of this blockage into context: exploding food prices, wastage, over-fishing, biofuel etc. In the end it boils down to the question of who is doing the (agricultural) work.

This "class" or actually "think tank" requires interaction between members within the group. Body language, dialog and emotional reactions are critical for our quest to find the Cascadian subconscious and collective mindscape. To watch or read assigned material is not enough to actually understand the journey that this "think tank" is on. I request that physically being in the class is the most valuable part of this quest.
For this class I request all to watch part one of Century of the Self.

"For those in whom a local mythology still works, there is an experience both of accord with the social order, and of harmony with the universe. For those, however, in whom the authorized signs no longer work - or, if working produce deviant effects - there follows inevitably a sense both of dissociation from the local social nexus and of quest within and without, for life, which the brain will take for "meaning". Coerced into the social pattern, the individual can only harden to some figure of living death; and if any considerable number of the members of a civilization are in this predicament, a point of no return will have passed."
