The PROWL Project is springing into action to bring new energy to forest conservation east of the Cascade crest. "PROWL" is the acronym for a nice long name: Protecting and Restoring Oregon Wild Lands. We are based in Bend and engage in forest watch and public outreach activities to protect the Ochoco and Deschutes National Forests. Our goal is to pounce on (and stop!) proposed public lands projects that are likely to degrade native ecosystems and to support ecological restoration.
The Pentagon is quietly moving to fill draft board vacancies nationwide. While officials say there's no cause to worry, some experts aren't so sure. Like writer Dave Lindorff in the current Salon ("Oiling Up the Draft Machine?").

Forest activists from all over the state of Oregon converged near Ashland this weekend to protest the Bear pen timber sale as part of the kickoff of the "Back to the wall" campaign to save our forests.
"Back to the Wall" chapters from Portland, Salem, Eugene, Roseburg, and Ashland all participated in what turned out to be a "victory" party when our large presence forced the forest service to lift the "closure" that had previously resulted in 3 arrests two weeks ago.

The earth is flat. Via the privately-owned media, actors and actresses say so, it must be true.
The Pacific Green Party needs you to believe that the Democrats and the Republicans are the same party. This is a lie, and by spreading this lie, they are sacrificing human lives and human rights for the most basic of Republican values: power and money.
The results of social services cuts after Measure 28, the bill to raise taxes referred to the voters by the state legislature last January.
"If a ballot measure in February reverses the [tax] surcharge, it's entirely possible that the hole becomes much deeper," he said, warning that many elements of the Oregon Health Plan would "cease to exist" or be drastically scaled back.
Since Measure 28, the state legislature's plan for a tax increase, failed last January, the legislature has cut social services, and people are hurting. The legislature's latest plan to fund services by raising taxes will probably be referred by petition to the voters -- here we go again. -- Lynn Porter

The following text is a speech given by Andrew Feenberg on his experience of the events of May 1968, in which he says that the common denominator that brought together students, workers and others to nearly overthrow the French state was not just capitalism, but also what he calls 'technocracy' , which is the rule of specialists, technicians and scientists. Feenberg will speak on his experiences on Sunday, Nov. 2 at 9:30 pm at Spartacus Books (311 W. Hastings) in Vancouver, BC.

More to the PJTTF -- At the end of this hysterical article promoting Bush's unHealthy Forest Initiative legislation, and throughout this piece, there is an ominous anti-environmentalist sentiment ... Even legislators who oppose eco-cide are described here as wanting the rest of America to "go burn in hell" It says at the end that Washington Oregon and California State authorities will be teaming up with law enforcement to catch ("hunt") anyone who dares to defend the forests...

Metro buses are sporting new spy cameras after 9/11. Metal mirrored balls hide a lens aimed at innocent passengers. Who knows where the film goes or what is done with it. These hidden cameras are supposed to be there for security, but wouldn't CAMERAS OUT IN THE OPEN DETER CRIME MORE THAN HIDDEN CAMERAS? Is this what democracy looks like? Spy cameras on buses in America?
