Are you crazy? Taking your meds?
Recent news reports have announced that in July the Bush Administration will call for the screening of ALL Americans -- including youth -- for mental health problems. In a way that might sound good -- look for problems early on, right? But as you may know, the Bush Administration is very much under the control of corporations. So it turns out the Bush approach is very oriented toward GETTING MORE AMERICANS onto psychiatric drugs.

Blue Mountains just recently surveyed the Five Buttes Interface (FBI) timber sale in the Crescent District of the Deschutes. Soon we'll have info and pictures on CascadiaRising.org of what they found. But in the meantime, we need to get the word out about help BMBP needs for later this month and in early August: volunteers and materials for building a Straw Bale office, experienced ground-truthers who can continue to survey sales while energy is taken up with construction, and high-clearance vehicles which can be used for that checking. U.S. paints Tre Arrow as terrorist
Tre appeared Wednesday for his monthly detention review where the adjudicator assesses whether it's still necessary to keep him in detention. Flight risk is the main consideration. His lawyer, Nagar Azamudeh, said the board is expected to rule in the next few days on whether Scarpitti should be deported immediately or allowed to make a refugee claim. She said the Crown is arguing he should not be allowed to stay, pointing to U.S. documents that paint Tre as a terrorist.

Greenpeace Activists Protest Old-Growth Logging in Umpqua National Forest
Umpqua National Forest, Ore - Greenpeace continued to spotlight destructive logging practices on U.S. public lands today, this time in Oregon's Umpqua National Forest, administered by the U.S. Forest Service. Four activists attached themselves to a three-ton cargo container placed in the middle of active logging operations at the site of the "Peanuts" timber sale, where felling and hauling of old-growth trees is underway by the D.R. Johnson company. Surrounded by stumps, the bright yellow container, which reads "Bush's Forest Destruction Stops Here" is the latest staging ground for Greenpeace's campaign calling for a moratorium on commercial logging of ancient forest on public lands.

For updates about today's action, see  http://weblog.greenpeace.org/stopthesales/index.html

Phone calls needed for Mike D!
As you may know, yesterday, Mike D was given a new court-appointed attorney, Heather Karabeika. As of yesterday afternoon, she had not yet spoken with Mike and had not had time to familiarize herself with his case.

Please give her a polite call (remember, she is not responsible for Mike's mistreatment and should be given the benefit of the doubt about serving his best interest, until proven otherwise).

She will know Mike as Michael McMullin and his case number is Case # - CR0311198.

What you may want to say:
1. Ask that she schedule a release hearing ASAP.
2. Remind her that Mike is not a flight risk nor does he pose any threat to the community.
3. Also important is that he has shown responsibility to attend two hearings regarding this case and only missed one. This should be evidence of his good faith to comply with the court and show that he made a forgivable mistake.
4. This is a low level misdemeanor charge and it is a waste of county resources and a violation of Mike's civil rights to keep him in jail, now for two weeks, with one week of solitary confinement without convincing justification.

Mike D's attorney:
Heather Karabeika
503-656-2637

Without this hearing, Mike D could be kept in jail for another 5 weeks until his court date that is currently scheduled for Tuesday, July 27th at 9 am, or who knows how long if that date gets postponed which is common.

Please call today!
