The Secretary of State today announced that both of the campaign finance reform initiatives sponsored by FairElections Oregon have qualified for the November 2006 general election ballot.
Big environmental organizations like ONRC, Sierra Club and OLCV will barely acknowledge Joe Keating, Pacific Green Party candidate for Governor, despite being a former chair of the Sierra Club and 19 years of environmental activism in Oregon. These groups care more about money, fiefdom, and political access than they care about the environment.

New documentary details the efforts of the Oil Industry, Auto Industry and Bush Administration to destroy the initial success of electric cars in California, that stemmed from the California Legislature's 1990 mandate that by 1998, automakers sell 2% of total sales in California that are electric. Efforts to overturn the law went into high gear following the "election" of Bush, as the Executive Branch unconstitutionally joined a lawsuit against the State of California.

RALLY AGAINST ISRAELI AGGRESSION in Seattle on August 12
Accused ELF arsonists Kendall Tankersley, Darren Thurston, Kevin Tubbs, Stanislas Meyerhoff, Chelsea Gerlach, and Suzanne Savoie, all entered guilty pleas on criminal conspiracy and related arson charges that occurred from 1996 through 2001 in Oregon and four other Western states. Each of the named defendants have agreed to cooperate and provide assistance to the government in the investigation and prosecution of other co-conspirators involved in arson, conspiracy and related crimes.
Jim McDermott (D-WA) is the sole exception.
We've talked to you lately in CUB Online about global warming and the need to purchase renewables, preserving equal access to the internet, and successful reform of utility tax rules. But this week we're back to the basics, the bread and butter of why CUB exists: the utilities want to raise your rates and we're gonna try and stop them.
Today, Thursday July 20, at the US District Court in Eugene, Darren Thurston, Kevin Tubbs and Kendall Tankersley plead guilty to several charges. Prior to the hearing, new "informations" (similar to indictments) were filed for each defendant, so that all the other defendants did not receive notice of the hearing. Therefore, many people were unable to attend what should have been a public change of plea proceeding. Furthermore, observers at the hearing learned that the plea agreement terms for Thurston, Tubbs and Tankersley are "sealed," and therefore not subject to public scrutiny.

Otpor (Resistance) was a nonviolent youth movement that lead to democratic revolution in Serbia.
"In the aftermath of NATO airstrikes against Yugoslavia and the Kosovo War, Otpor started a political campaign against the Yugoslav president Slobodan Milošević. This resulted in nationwide police repression against Otpor activists, during which almost 2000 of them were arrested and some of them beaten. During the presidential campaign in September 2000, Otpor launched its "Gotov je" (He's finished) campaign that galvanized Serbian discontent with Milošević and eventually resulted in his defeat. Some students who led Otpor (whose name means "Resistance" in the Serbian language) used Serb translations of Gene Sharp's writings on nonviolent action as a theoretical basis for their campaign."
"The National Endowment for Democracy, which this fiscal year got $60 million from the U.S. Congress, says it has decided to stop funding a Kyrgyz NGO called Civil Society Against Corruption because of its pronounced opposition bent. The Civil Society, which in 2003 received a $25,000 NED grant, is headed by Tolekan Ismailova, a veteran Kyrgyz human-rights campaigner and opposition activist. Earlier this month, she organized the local translation and distribution of a 1993 revolutionary manual used in Serbia, Ukraine and Georgia. The manual, "From Dictatorship to Democracy," was written by Gene Sharp, a political scientist and senior scholar at the Albert Einstein Institution in Boston. It includes tips on nonviolent resistance -- such as 'display of flags and symbolic colors' -- and civil disobedience."

Trevi Albin of Rotary International has published photos and a story about the Children of the Golden Triangle Mission in Thailand, which is a christian mission that takes Akha children away from their families for conversion and propaganda. This mission we have known for years and they are agressively engaged in the destruction of Akha culture. The mission is dominated by Chinese from Taiwan, some of the most brutal fundamentalists, with agendas for young Akha women that are not all together clear. Trevi is promoting Rotary sponsors to support this mission with donations. We oppose Rotary's involvement in this.
Rotary owes the Akha an apology.
Several years ago I was part of many Community responses to sexual assaults. I also came out with my own story - or part of it, anyhow. I told people about how one person had raped me, but not about the community pattern of silence about my partners abusive behavior, and scorn for me for putting up with it, that preceded my rape. And, after I told that story, I kept silent about many others.

Made available for FREE for personal reading at the Historical Review Press is a short book by Israeli Professor Israel Shahak. With the Forward written by Gore Vidal, the book covers the history of Jewish persecution, both received and meted to others, as a preface for understanding modern Zionism. The author, who survived Nazi incarceration at Belsen Concentration Camp, documents the role of some of the more radical and racist elements of the contemporary Zionist movement and how it influences policy in Israel, the Middle East, and America.
