Animal Rights
The Portland area has a strong history of animal rights activism. Within recent years, institutions like Legacy and OHSU have been targeted for their barbaric experiments on primates, cats, dogs, and other animals. Partially in response to public pressure, they're in the process of consolidating most, if not all, animal experimentation at the Oregon Regional Primate Research Center (ORPRC). In anticipation of this and based on the Oregon Opportunity Plan's ill-conceived aim to expand Oregon's biomedical industry and its use of animal models, the ORPRC is in the process of enlarging their compound. To this end, they've been awarded $200 million from the tobacco tax fund. That OHP and indigent services are facing cuts so drastic they may be fatal, combined with the fact that animal research was used for at least 20 years to prove tobacco did not cause lung cancer, make this award to ORPRC painfully ironic. A campaign of increasing importance is Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty (SHAC), a dedicated group of activists who have been successful in martialing national support for their efforts to shut down the infamous New Jersey animal testing lab. Read on and follow links provided in the left column for more background and information. Portland Indymedia offers a place where the stories of these events can be told. This page contains portland indymedia content on many of the public events of the last few months, but is by no means exhaustive. The best way to improve indymedia coverage is to participate yourself, by publishing your own original reporting to the newswire, or producing audio or video for streaming radio, video showings or cable access. Now I am not a prude, but with the shelter filled with children participating in something called camp and parents bringing children in to adopt a new pet, is the Oregon Humane Society an appropriate place for member of the corporate sex industry to set up shop? Whoever chose to use Playboy Playmates, most of whom moonlight as strippers, as a PR stunt definitely isn't in tune with what a family oriented organization is. I am saddened by this.
Bluehour serves foie gras, which is literally the diseased livers of ducks and geese who have been force-fed with metal tubes rammed down their throats. The mortality rate on foie gras farms is about 20 times that of other duck farms. The birds are force-fed such huge amounts of food that they cannot walk. Their necks are torn by the metal tubes. The process is so cruel that it has been banned in at least 14 countries, including the United Kingdom, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, Sweden, Norway and Denmark.
From the open publishing newswire:
It's been confirmed that Eagle Asset Management/Raymond James Financial sold their shares in HLS. After being made aware of the cruelty inside HLS, through protests in London and in the USA. Along with polite emails from across the world. Eagle Asset Management/Raymond James have sold their half a million shares in LSR on 15th July, we thank them for taking an ethical stance on this and to stop dealing with HLS/LSR. Thank you for your support!

To produce foie gras (fatty liver) ducks and geese are force-fed two to three times per day using metal pipes shoved down their throats. Their throats and esophagus' are scratched and wounded with the insertion and removal of the pipes, sometimes causing mortal infections... Some animals are too sick to even stand. The production of foie gras is banned in many places, including the UK, Italy, Norway, Switzerland, Israel, the Czech Republic, Poland, and Argentina, on grounds of animal cruelty. For more information and video, see http://www.goveg.com/feat/foie/ Managers and employees at Ten-01 taunted us, saying they would never take foie gras off the menu, and that we were only letting potential customers know that foie gras was served there, thus helping their business. However, we saw a number of parties turn away and go elsewhere, once they were shown that foie gras is served at Ten-01. The valet told us that business was slower than usual... At one point an Elmer Fudd looking dude who identified himself as "block security" and was wearing an "official t-shirt" told us that we had to move on.... Fortunately, what remains of the First Amendment dictates that it is legal to peacefully protest. Message to Ten-01: you do not in fact own the public sidewalk.

Ungar Furs Shut Down for Memorial Day, but Protesters Did Not
With Ungar Furs shut down for Memorial Day, protesters used the Saturday morning regular protest time to write educational messages on the sidewalk in chalk. Several protesters gathered to continue the presence in front of the store, which sells the pelts of animals who have had their necks broken, were gassed to death or anally electrocuted in the name of vanity. The animals used for Ungar's unethical products do not get holidays off, and Ungar Furs will not get any Saturdays off. Remarkably, the fact that the store was closed did not seem to make any difference in their daily sales, as roughly the same number of customers approached the store as when the store is open: 0. Come help Ungar Furs make the responsible decision that it's time to retire: Every Saturday 10:30 am - 1 pm 1137 SW Yamhill St Portland 97205
I want to know who saw the fisherman do it. It has been said that the Sea Lion went to eat the fish that was on the fisherman's line so he/she shot the Sea Lion. What they do not say in any of the 2 articles is who saw the fisherman do it and why was he not caught? There is so little info about this. I encourage everyone to pick up the phone and call The National Marine Fisheries Service at 206-526-6150. Ask them what is going on and then post it here. We need more information.
We will be meeting at 6:30 at the courner of 10th and Davis. That is in the Pearl district downtown. We will then walk to the restaurant 'Blue Hour' where foie gras is prominently featured on their menu.

From the open publishing newswire:
Four California sea lions and two Steller sea lions were found shot to death below Bonneville river at noon today. The area is now sealed off as a crime scene, since the killing involved gunshots at a federal facility. The sea lions were found dead at the traps. ...at the TRAPS.
This killing is a direct result of the government's recent proposal to kill sea lions. This is what we all knew would happen, up and down the river, from now on. A killing frenzy. Sea lions have been scapegoated for the human-induced salmon crisis, and fishermen have whipped themselves up into a frothing vengeance. As we knew it would, they have taken the government's decision as permission to kill. As they were meant to. These, by the way, are the very fishermen who have been screaming about how "aggressive" the sea lions are when they try to haul out into their boats. I think it's pretty clear which species is truly aggressive, and truly destructive here. The sea lions were apparently caged in the traps at the time of the shooting, and although the finger on the trigger was apparently some beer-soaked fisherman (who remains free tonight) rather than an ODFW official, the government is directly to blame for putting these sea lions into harm's way in this manner. Please let them know what you think. And please get to the river and keep watch. There will likely be more shootings like this now. Do what you must to protect the sea lions from human aggression. |
