Portland Climate Convergence Action

From the open publishing newswire: Today, August 4, 2008, in the final event of the Climate Convergence, about two dozen people participated in a multi faceted rally, street theater, and march to NW Natural Gas.

The first portion of the action took place along the Portland Waterfront, just north of the west side of the Hawthorne Bridge, where, amid chants and exhortations in favor of riding bicycles, tickets were given to mock automobiles by officers of the Oil Enforcement Agency. Replete with chants and signs, the event was mainly organized around resistance to the proposed 6 lane I-5 bridge over the Columbia River.

Leaving there the gathering marched along the Waterfront, where at the Morrison Bridge they came upon a young man locked down on an access ramp to the Morrison Bridge. As the group arrived, a young woman climbed the structure of the bridge and unfurled a banner which read, "6 More Lanes = More Sick People NO EXPANSION."

The Desertification of Southern Oregon

kendrick forest farm From the open publishing newswire: Notes on the effect of excessive logging on a small watershed: Our forest farm is situated astraddle a narrow box canyon in the rugged Siskyou Mountains of Southern Oregon and sits less than a mile downstream from the headwaters of the creek that flows down our little canyon towards the mighty Rogue River. Our watershed covers about 400 acres of what used to be heavily forested steep terrain... In Southern Oregon, water is life and our creek brought life to this beautiful green canyon whose slopes were densely populated with tall Firs, Cedars and Sugar Pines interspersed with huge Oaks and Madrones that hadn't seen heavy logging since the late 1920's. It was our Eden and we worked hard over the years to improve and protect the riparian area along the creek, the wetland areas created by the many springs, and the health of our forest.

But we soon had a rude awakening when one of the three upstream private properties was purchased and heavily logged by timber speculators, leaving one face of the canyon denuded and damaged from running heavy equipment to drag the logs out. The springs dried up, the slope became a desert with only the hardiest of Oaks surviving... Our creek was clogged with sediment from erosion runoff in winter for several years and it's flow dropped by at least twenty percent in summer and never returned to past levels...

We once enjoyed the warm days of summer, falling asleep to the sound of the creek gurgling over the rocks and the scent of mockorange in bloom along its banks, but it is now with dread that we watch the days become hotter, baking the life force out of every living thing.

The Role of Homeland Security in the May 30 Arrest of anti-Pesticide Demonstrators

homeland security From the open publishing newswire: Only yesterday did I - one of the three arrestees from the May 30th Taser Incident - finally get to read the police reports on the incident. I have to admit, if I had not been there and witnessed things with my own eyes, the police reports would seem very compelling. However, because I was there, I notice clear falsehoods, misleading statements, and plenty of probably honest mistakes in the reports. In this letter I will address several key falsehoods/mistakes. I will begin with the biggest shocker: THE KEY ROLE PLAYED BY HOMELAND SECURITY in not only my arrest, but in instigating the entire ugly affair. I will point out several verifiable falsehoods in their reports.

Back to basics

Wild foods From the open publishing newswire: Given the state of the world (fuel, transportation, weather, crop loss etc) the single most important act no matter your situation (assuming you aren't in prison or on the tenth floor of a high-rise condo unit) is to grow some food. Basic sustenance is the great equalizer.

This culture [sic] is responsible for a hell of a lot of suffering both domestically and internationally. We are now looking at a global train wreck with famine, disease, resource wars etc. I realize this is not a new situation for many millions around the world but it is going to escalate.

Citizens Hunger-Strike Against NW Natural’s Liquefied Natural Gas Proposal

From the open publishing newswire: Citizens of Oregon have begun a ten (10) day hunger-strike on the main entrance of the NW Natural Energy Company headquarters building to bring awareness to the fact that the Palomar Gas Transmission System (PGT) is a serious and intolerable threat to the ecological and social integrity of Oregon.

NW Natural and Palomar are preparing to install a massive pipeline through over 500 miles of Oregon's public and private property. This will result in devastating impacts on streams, rivers and waterways, wildlife habitat areas, wilderness, and small family farms. NW Natural is carelessly destroying these precious ecosystems for private gains. All fuel piped through the PGT system will go to supply California with liquefied natural gas. There are no direct benefits for Oregonians who are affected. As we stand on the verge of global environmental crises, NW Natural is stepping in the wrong direction.

Mass death of bees in Germany: Pesticide approvals suspended

From the open publishing newswire: The cause of mass bee deaths has been established: pesticide products from chemical companies Bayer and Syngenta. They have been removed from sale in Germany. We should now pressure Bayer and regulators to remove them from sale elsewhere...

{Posted on the UKIMC) "Bayer must withdraw Gaucho and Poncho from the market worldwide"

The German Office for Consumer Protection and Food Safety (BVL) has ordered the immediate suspension of the approval for eight seed treatment products due to the mass death of bees in Germany's Baden-Wuerttemberg state. The suspended products are: Antarc (ingredient: imidacloprid; produced by Bayer), Chinook (imidacloprid; Bayer), Cruiser (thiamethoxam; Syngenta), Elado (clothianidin; Bayer), Faibel (imidacloprid; Bayer), Mesurol (methiocarb; Bayer) and Poncho (clothianidin; Bayer). According to the German Research Centre for Cultivated Plants 29 out of 30 dead bees it had examined had been killed by contact with clothianidin. Also wild bees and other insects are suffering from a significant loss of population.

Buffalo Advocates Rally in Helena

Buffalo Field Campaign award to Montana Governor From the open publishing newswire: With banners and tombstones in hand, and strong hearts that have withstood a season of tremendous buffalo slaughter, Buffalo Field Campaign volunteers trekked to Montana's capitol, Helena, on Wednesday, May 15, for a rally to draw attention to Montana Governor Schweitzer's role in the shameful slaughter of America's last wild bison. Buffalo Field Campaign was joined by other friends of buffalo, including local residents and members of a newly formed citizen action group, Buffalo Allies of Bozeman.

At the end of the event, people walked into the capitol and up to the Governor's office to present this [Buffalo Bill] "award" to Montana's Governor Brian Schweitzer for his role in the largest wild buffalo slaughter since the 1800s. This is the same governor who promised "more tolerance" for wild bison in Montana. Of course, the Governor was out of the office and unable to receive his token in person, but an intern was sent out to hear our concerns in his stead.

Sea Lion Deaths Blamed on "Heat Prostration." OBVIOUS LIE

astoria sea lions From the open publishing newswire: The corporate media is now reporting what we assumed they would: That nature is to blame for the deaths of six trapped sea lions, and not foul play. Because, as we all know, Homeland Security is keeping our dams very secure, and no one could possibly have gotten past them to close those traps and kill those sea lions. No, it must have been the heat. Yeh. That's it. The heat. ...But wait.

Un-Dam the Klamath Film Nights Reach PacifiCorp Ratepayers on the Oregon Coast

The Egyptian Theater in downtown Coos Bay From the open publishing newswire: Klamath Riverkeeper and the Karuk Tribe reached hundreds of citizens on the Oregon coast last week with a series of film nights aimed at connecting fishermen and Pacificorp ratepayers to the campaign to un-dam the Klamath River. The film nights were preceded by mailings to all of PacifiCorp's customers on the Oregon Coast. The mailer stated, "There's Something Fishy About Your Power Bill" and featured a tear-off postcard telling the Oregon Public Utilities Commission to reject increased power rates for keeping the Klamath dams.

The film nights, held in Astoria, Newport, Coos Bay, and Brookings, showed how PacifiCorp's dams are hurting salmon on the Klamath River, as well as how the Klamath's declining Chinook salmon runs impact commercial fishing communities from southern California to northern Oregon. Filmgoers also learned about how PacifiCorp is planning to pay for upgrading and re-licensing its aging dams by increasing power rates to its customers.

Both the California Energy Commission and the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission have shown that overhauling the dams to meet current federal fish passage standards may cost hundreds of millions of dollars more than simply removing the Klamath dams and buying replacement power. PacifiCorp can use "cost recovery" to pass these increased costs on to its customers, a practice which must first be approved by the Oregon Public Utilities Commission (PUC).
