On April 1, the state of Oregon will decide whether or not to approve the Morrow Pacific coal export project. If approved, it would be the first of five proposed coal export facilities to get a green light in the Northwest and open the flood gates for others, creating a climate nightmare. With the health, safety, and economy of dozens of communities from Montana to Oregon at stake, we are sounding the alarm to stop coal exports in the Northwest.
Earthquakes are very common, and most go unnoticed. Especially when they are outside areas of human habitation. However a recent cluster should remind us of our vulnerability and we should always take appropriate precautions.

The real effect of any carbon tax would be that American jobs, economic growth, living standards, health, dreams and lives would be sacrificed for nothing: no change in global atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations or climate variability, and no reduction in out-of-control spending or deficits.

The man-made global warming movement has officially shifted from runaway global warming fears over to extreme weather fears. This strategic shift has been in the works for years as global average temperatures have stalled by up to 16 years. First there was a transition from "global warming" to "climate change" and now to "global climate disruption." Some have suggested "global weirding" others have suggested a "new normal."

Nothing influences President Barack Obama's decision on the Keystone XL pipeline quite like the protests against it, led by Bill McKibben, an American environmentalist, and his organization, called 350.org. On Wednesday, 350.org and the Sierra Club participated in an anti-Keystone protest at the White House and this Sunday they are holding another one on Capital Hill. In this process truly poetic rather than scientific, in which consortia of species succeed in building an environment increasingly rich and varied, every plant, every animal, every micro-organism has its contributory role, being the man for the first time in history, leaving his sad protagonist role of stingy tormentor of nature and life and move creatively to assume the coordination of the construction process.

Renouncing on growth or tolerating a shriveling economy is hard. Greece is a shocking example. Many people cut down the last trees because could not afford heating oil. Nature is the first victim in an economic crisis. Whole generations are traumatized and may turn to a supposed rescuer if new jobs do not arise soon. We must bid farewell to growth to save the environment.
The economic theory of socialism does not demand an unlimited growth. The capitalist agrarian economy and industry wear out the two exclusive sources of wealth: the earth and workers. Barry Commoner pleaded for a radical modification of the economic system in general and socialism in particular. Capitalist accumulation and the finite earth are in contradiction.
