AN EVENING WITH MAX RAMEAU OF TAKE BACK THE LAND!

From the open publishing newswire: November 13, 6-8p, Smith Memorial Union Hall, PSU

Max Rameau is the founder of the Miami-based organization Take Back the Land. In 2006, the organization seized control of a vacant lot and built a shantytown called Umoja Village. Take Back the Land then began a campaign of taking over bank-owned foreclosed homes and moving homeless families into them.

VIDEOS: Homeless Protest at City Hall

homeless protest city hall 10.10.09 From the open publishing newswire: I stopped by the "NO Camping Law" Protest, at Portland City Hall, and not expecting to see anyone I find about 20 people who are "protest/camping" around the building to demand changes regarding sleeping in a safe place without arrest at night in Portland.

The protest and some of the problems are discussed in the four short vidoes. The restroom issue was something I feel needs better attention by the city especially now that they closed the city hall rest room and there seems to be not much available from what I hear.

The protest seems respectable yet poignant in its demands. With winter quickly approaching and with others being criminalized for sleeping outside the city is being pressured to step things up.

A Complaint About Police Harassment in Downtown Portland

From the open publishing newswire: I work downtown. I work in a high rise office building, I have a PhD, I pull in a fairly good salary, and I am very involved with my community. I tell you these things, not because I think you ought to be impressed by them, but because I want to draw you a picture of the two different worlds that I am part of and the perspective that gives me. In one world, I have a five star view of the city from my ivory tower office, where I interact primarily with people in suits. In the other world, I am an advocate for people who are homeless - as I once was - and I am very close to the streets. And so this is where this story begins.

Homeless people camp and protest once again at City Hall

From the open publishing newswire: BREAKING NEWS: Homeless people camp and protest once again at City Hall

An Organized night time protest is now in effect.

"We are here tonight to show that this is the only campsite that is safe inside the city of Portland and that we really need places that we are able to go for the night and know that we are going to be safe. By safe, we mean that we'll be able to pitch a tent or sleep in a shelter or live in a tent city without harassment from the police."

Sit/Lie Unconstitutional! Cause for Celebration? Well...Not Really...

The Civic Action Group From the open publishing newswire: A judge has ruled the Sit/Lie unconstitutional but Police Chief Rosie Sizer released a memo stating that all the judge ruled was that Portland should just use disorderly conduct instead of Sit/Lie. That is not what the judge ruled and her vague memo creates NO meaningful distinction between the Sit/Lie and disorderly conduct. This is not how the city should react to the loss of the constitutional legitimacy of the Sit/Lie. Two many good people have worked to hard on this issue for the Police Chief to take such a step without analysis and public input....

Sit/Lie Protests in Portland

From the open publishing newswire: As Portland's Sit/Lie ordinance is deemed as unconstitutional, there is evidence all over Portland of underground actions protesting the law. (Some popped up all over the city before the circuit court decision).
The signs the figures are holding have some of the following statements on them:

* "This city wide ordinance has been deemed unconstitutional by circuit court. Sit/Lie in unity to the supreme court. FREEDOM FOR ALL."

* "SIT LIE LAW IS A GVNMENT CURSE - Homeless Front"

Some that I spotted before the circuit court decision simply stated, "SIT LIE" and appeared to be attached with metal to what they were sitting on.

Foreclosure Prevention Action at Multnomah County Courthouse

From the open publishing newswire: A motley crew of 35-40 pissed-off Portlanders disrupted the auction of foreclosed homes by bank-fraudsters yesterday morning at the Multnomah County Courthouse before being removed by Sheriff's deputies from the lobby of the courthouse, some violently. Attendees shouted slogans and made "bids" on properties (e.g., "I bid that you keep people in their homes").
The law-unenforcers outrageously claimed that the courthouse lobby and steps were not "public space", and that they therefore were entitled to grab and shove members of the group away from the building. One deputy said, "I'm the judge" of what's public space.
The banking industry has been obstructing attempts by activists to require pre-foreclosure mediation between themselves and homeowners because such mediation has been shown to keep people in their homes rather than out on the streets, where "unnecessary" people should apparently be.

Radical Richard Taken To Jail!

SOLIDARITY - HOMELESSNES IS NOT A CRIME From the open publishing newswire: Local activist jailed for smoking.
Radical Richard was cited for "offensive littering" while smoking on the opposite side of the street from Pioneer Square. He put his cigarette out on the ground and was immediately approached by police who announced that they were citing him for "offensive littering". Richard told them that many people put out their cigarettes on the street and that they (the cops) were only citing him because they targeted him as a potentially homeless person. Richard then told the cops that he would obtain a lawyer and fight his case if cited for this infraction. The cops then took him to jail, he spent several hours in Central Precinct. His court date is November 28th.
Richard needs our support, please contact Central Precinct (503)823-0097 and voice your concern about the obvious over handed jailing of a minor infraction offender.

Take the survey on Portland Business Journal

 http://portland.bizjournals.com/portland/poll/?poll_id=6178

The link is for a poll on the sit lie ordinance

The Portland City Council will revisit the city's "sit-lie" ordinance in October. The ordinance, adopted last year, prohibits persons from sitting, either on the pavement or on a chair or stool, or lying down on public sidewalks. Supporters say the law makes for a safer, cleaner downtown, but opponents say it discriminates against the homeless.

Do you support Portland's sit-lie ordinance?
Yes No
Undecided
