Help out a Portlander in need this holiday season!!
A record one in six American families went hungry last year because they did not have enough food, a shock survey has revealed. Some 17.4 million U.S. households - 50 million people - were classified as 'food insecure' which meant they regularly skipped meals even if they wanted to eat. Others went for entire days without eating and handed round smaller portion sizes to make their meagre offerings suffice. ---- news comes as revealed top U.S. executives saw pay and bonuses shoot up last year [despite] worst recession for 80 years [caused by their bad money management]. ---- acutely embarrassing for the United States, world's richest nation and last remaining superpower. They also shine a light on the vast numbers of hard working Americans who have lost their jobs in the recession and for the first time are having to rely on the state to make ends meet. The U.S. Department of Agriculture study shows that in 2009, almost 50 million people, including 17 million children, were 'food insecure'. This marked a slight INCREASE from the previous year when 17.1 million families had difficulty putting meals on the table. Those in this category usually went hungry, could not afford a balanced meal and cut their portion sizes on the occasions they did have food. ---- Now one in five of all Americans were signed up to one kind of federal food-assistance programmes including food stamps which attracted 34 million participants.

While governor hopefuls Jerry Brown and Meg Whitman debated on Tuesday night in San Rafael, the Green Party candidate for governor was being arrested outside the hall. Police charged Laura Wells with trespassing after she tried to get into the debate that she was not allowed to participate in.
Two events occurred in the last few days. Decide for yourself if they are entirely unrelated. Yesterday, I purchased a dozen eggs at the supermarket. Today I dropped my 5-year-old daughter off at her Kindergarten class. See the connection? Perhaps you may find one if you are willing to take the conceptual leap of examining the fate of the chicken alongside that of a typical kindergartner.

First Presbyterian Church's "Julia West House" charity receives taxpayer money from the Portland Bureau of Housing to run interim Day Resource Access Center while the permanent facility is under construction. Claims of bad economy aside, why is Julia West House cutting down services that make real differences, and more importantly, why is it losing so many clients?

A Christian view of the person that insists on an undeserved right to life opposes a merciless system that produces more and more wealth for a few and forces more and more people into poverty. The narrowing of work to paid work must be broken by the new model of work for all. The three kinds of income must be reconfigured in a new social contract.

email from Oregon Legislature Speaker of the House, Representative Dave Hunt:
CAPITOL REPORT: June 2, 2010
Last week the state economist issued a new quarterly revenue projection of $577 million less for 2009-11 than he projected in February. Though this new budget shortfall presents a clear and difficult challenge, it is not debilitating and Oregon must remain on the road to economic recovery. Read below about our action plan for addressing these new budget shortfalls.
The Governor has announced his plans to cut $577 million equally across all education, health care, and public safety services. Do you think the Legislature should have a Special Session? If so, where should we cut more deeply? Where should we mitigate for the damage of the across-the-board cuts? How much should we leave in savings to guard against future quarterly forecasts?
Now is your opportunity to weigh in on the steps the Legislature should take the solve the short-term budget shortfall while addressing long-term budget and policy goals. I need to hear your concerns now in order to effectively represent you in the Legislature.
If you would like to share your thoughts with me in person, then join me at my Town Hall Meeting on Jobs, Economic Recovery & the State Budget next Wednesday, June 9th at 6:30pm at The Springs at Clackamas Woods! [ed note: this is mainly for folks in his district but nothing says others can't go].
Public housing in Berkeley and Oakland are under attack by corporate profiteers, and if HUD and the Obama Administration have it their way, public housing across the nation will be next on the chopping block of corporate privatization! Join the struggle against the privatization of public housing!

Rightwing pundits jumped on candidate Obama for saying we do better when we share. These two British researchers show the correlation of inequality and level of trust, murder rates, imprisonment rates and mental illness. John Kenneth Galbraith decried the public squalor existing alongside private opulence. Will the crisis lead us to a balance of public and private?

The industry, we hear, is finally getting behind this wonderful handout which is still being called "reform". Pellosi says Dems "must" sign on to it. The Seiu is behind it. Did BPharm pay them off or is somebody reading poorly?
Society cannot afford to dismantle the social state. The social state guarantees inner peace. The strength of a people is measured by the well-being of the weak, those not born with a silver spoon. Solidarity, social justice and equal opportunities are the keywords of the social state; they open doors.
The purpose of the study is to evaluate support programs for families who have experienced such a tragedy, and the lowering of the overall number of law enforcement related deaths.

If the census is going create lots of jobs for people that are out of work, then why not maximize that opportunity (for lack of the alternatives being extended to the un/underemployed) by waiting for somebody to come to your door?
Neoliberalism is the political-economic experiment of individualizing social risks and claiming growth and employment will be higher. This claim is refuted convincingly by the global financial crisis destroying enormous assets and causing growth and employment to crash.

The reforms that Barack Obama is proposing will not fundamentally change the United States' abysmal healthcare system because those who profit from it have been able to buy protection from the lawmakers. The welfare program ditched in 1996 absorbed about 1% of the US budget.. The Golden Age of the welfare state began after the Second World War.

Our public agencies and officials are hard at work building a "failed state." I would define a "failed state" as one that does not meet the minimum requirements for attaining a measure of public legitimacy based on serving broad social needs. Such a state can only maintain authority through brute force. A state will "fail" once it stops serving the needs of a critical mass of its citizens. The term has been coopted by US militarists as a pretext to justify unlawful and violent interference in the affairs of foreign states, but it remains a useful concept in spite of this taint.
The Fairview Training Center was once known as the "Oregon State Institution
for the Feeble-Minded." It was established in 1908 and housed thousands of
residents with disabilities for close to a century. During that time, these
residents suffered from inadequate staffing, poor training, serious health
hazards, restraints, forced sterilization, rape, torture and neglect.
Jean Mercer's article is a polemic, rather than a scientific, approach to the issues that are involved in the diagnosis and treatment of children with disorders of attachment. An example of such a scientific approach can be found in the special issue of Attachment and Human Development.

Health care bill, now in hands of the Senate, ignores every industrial threat and harm to health. It finds that people's behavior is the biggest threat. Could this be because all Senators are economically-linked to health-harming industries, AND their insurers and investors? Sworn and public-paid Congress members wouldn't go AWOL on their solemn oaths and duties to the people, would they?

Basics from Times article:
"... Baltazar Cruz speaks only Chatino, barely any Spanish and no English. Last November, she went to Singing River Hospital in Pascagoula, Miss., where she lives, to give birth to a baby girl, Rubí. According to documents obtained by the Mississippi Clarion-Ledger, the hospital called the state Department of Human Services (DHS), which ruled that Baltazar Cruz was an unfit mother in part because her lack of English "placed her unborn child in danger and will place the baby in danger in the future."
"Rubí was taken from Baltazar Cruz, who now faces deportation."
CIRILA BALTAZAR'S DAUGHTER HAS BEEN PLACED WITH A MISSIPPI FAMILY.
