He's just an ordinary, out-of-shape individual and he left home without a dime in his pocket This week Terry is riding through Olympia and Tacoma on his way to Seattle. He is depending on community members and organizations to meet all of his needs for food, shelter, and cappuccino. He is also asking for five million dollars in donations along the way. Besides being the overweight, amateur cyclist, Terry is a community member with twenty years experience in community building. He has a professional background in writing and film. And he is spreading a message of community action and solidarity. He has made a commitment to ride around the country until he raises five million dollars.

The PDX Radical Childcare Collective is in the process of forming and we invite everyone to come to our second meeting Saturday 2/21 at 12:30pm. It will be held at the Calvary church at 126 NE Alberta, and in room childcare will be provided.
Our current goal is to start off providing care for activist organizations and insta-action care, and then eventually mold into more needed roles. We believe this is an important step as parents voices are often not at the table when movement decisions are being made that have a great impact on their lives.

I attended the arraignment for William Bergin this afternoon.
The court room of Judge Jeffrey S. Jones was crowded this afternoon. Many cases had been re-scheduled because of the weather over the past few weeks, so the docket was full. William Bergin entered the room with his attorney Des Connell and they chatted about driving in the snow while we waited for the judge to enter. Channel 12 news was present and allowed to have a better view of the proceedings than those of us seated in the back of the room... The outcome of that process is yet to be determined. Comment: Well, after convincing the District Attorney's Office that the public is entitled to know the name of the Deputy who is handling the arraignment (not an easy task), it was learned that Deputy District Attorney Michael Regan (503 655 8431) was charged with seeking "justice" in the matter of Mr. Bergin...Stay tuned.
Apparently two men fired upon the riot cop around 3am. Currently Exarchia is sealed off, dozens of people have been arrested in and around various bars and cafes often frequented by anarchists. Police have detained 72 people during the initial search for suspects after the attack.

is anyone interested in starting a radical family house?
i am currently living in santa cruz and moving to portland at the end of october. i have been searching for housing on craigslist (tee hee i typed craigslist and my automatic spell check changes it to capitalist) typing in kids and children ( to see which houses are down) only to find no kids no children allowed. i think it would be really awesome to rent a house ( got i wish i could own) with other radical parents and kids and people who wanna help out with kids or like kids etc. . i know how tough it is to find housing wehre people are down with kids and ok with them which sucks! so anyone interested? lets live together, have a garden, take our kids on trips, have a childcare collective etc. . .!

"How can I start a class" you ask? Well, its easy! You can teach something that you are passionate about, or maybe start a group to discuss something you'd like to learn more of. It can be in your living room, a park, or any other community space. We have lots more resources for starting a class and finding a space on our website. Read below for some fine examples of grassroots education happening this month, or you can also attend our...

Section 9528 of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 requires schools to release our family's private
information to military recruiters unless parents (youth in some cases) "opt out" in writing. You can get a copy of the form here: http://www.leavemychildalone.org/lmca_forms/Opt_Out_Form_Parents.pdf
If the youth is already in the database, they can send this form: http://www.leavemychildalone.org/lmca_forms/JAMRS_OPT_OUT.pdf to get removed from the Pentagon's recruiting and marketing database.
I believe parents and youth have until the end of September to file the first form with the school district so they don't pass along the student and family's personal information.

This is a response to the article by Dante Armos titled "Student Activism Doesn't Make The Grade" (
http://portland.indymedia.org/en/2008/07/377275.shtml). Though I valued its attack on pretention and intellectual elitism, I have a few counter-points in defense of higher education, student organizations, and required community service.
Higher education in America is bullshit. Earning a college degree has become synomymous with earning a key into the middle class and (who knows, this is America, right!) beyond. Too often, education serves to elaborate on the tactics available to enter into and thus maintain systems and games of dominance. |
