From Stone Wall on: Going back to go Forward The Childhood of the Revolution

Stonewall Inn From the open publishing newswire: It is indeed hard to escape it. Though the mainstream "straight" media pays it no heed, the gay media is abuzz. This summer marks the 40th anniversary of the Stonewall riots. What makes Stonewall significant? Was it the first queer voice of the modern era? Certainly not, during the Weidar republic there had been a brief shining moment when significant strides had been made in the city of Berlin (this of course ended very badly, the rise of Adolf Hitler changed the cities "civil union" registry an easy way to identify, locate and round-up large numbers of what was the first modern queer rights movement. Though some fled and even a few waited out the war in hiding in Germany itself (for example the DaDa artist Hannah Hoch). It wasn't even the first time that the subject of gay rights had been advocated. The sisters of Bolita, and the matachine society had been "respectably" (and with all due respect to the immense bravery of those early advocates) quite ignorably picoting in DC, and doing the "letter writing" thing. No, what made Stonewall special, what makes it the Day we remember was that it was the day when queers not only advocated for their rights but refused the model of hetero-superiority. Rather than try to persuade the "big America" that they were deserving of human rights, the Queers of Stonewall stood up to the Cops in the streets of New York and REFUSED to be anything less than human.

Next Radical Childcare Meeting! [TODAY 2/21]

From the open publishing newswire: The PDX Radical Childcare Collective is in the process of forming and we invite everyone to come to our second meeting Saturday 2/21 at 12:30pm. It will be held at the Calvary church at 126 NE Alberta, and in room childcare will be provided.

Our current goal is to start off providing care for activist organizations and insta-action care, and then eventually mold into more needed roles. We believe this is an important step as parents voices are often not at the table when movement decisions are being made that have a great impact on their lives.

Bergin arraignment report back

From the open publishing newswire: I attended the arraignment for William Bergin this afternoon.
The court room of Judge Jeffrey S. Jones was crowded this afternoon. Many cases had been re-scheduled because of the weather over the past few weeks, so the docket was full. William Bergin entered the room with his attorney Des Connell and they chatted about driving in the snow while we waited for the judge to enter. Channel 12 news was present and allowed to have a better view of the proceedings than those of us seated in the back of the room... The outcome of that process is yet to be determined.

Comment: Well, after convincing the District Attorney's Office that the public is entitled to know the name of the Deputy who is handling the arraignment (not an easy task), it was learned that Deputy District Attorney Michael Regan (503 655 8431) was charged with seeking "justice" in the matter of Mr. Bergin...Stay tuned.

High school kids can opt out of military recruiting

From the open publishing newswire: Section 9528 of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 requires schools to release our family's private
information to military recruiters unless parents (youth in some cases) "opt out" in writing.

You can get a copy of the form here:  http://www.leavemychildalone.org/lmca_forms/Opt_Out_Form_Parents.pdf

If the youth is already in the database, they can send this form:  http://www.leavemychildalone.org/lmca_forms/JAMRS_OPT_OUT.pdf to get removed from the Pentagon's recruiting and marketing database.

I believe parents and youth have until the end of September to file the first form with the school district so they don't pass along the student and family's personal information.

Higher Education, Progressive Change

From the open publishing newswire: This is a response to the article by Dante Armos titled "Student Activism Doesn't Make The Grade" ( http://portland.indymedia.org/en/2008/07/377275.shtml). Though I valued its attack on pretention and intellectual elitism, I have a few counter-points in defense of higher education, student organizations, and required community service.

Higher education in America is bullshit. Earning a college degree has become synomymous with earning a key into the middle class and (who knows, this is America, right!) beyond. Too often, education serves to elaborate on the tactics available to enter into and thus maintain systems and games of dominance.
