PSU Students Storm President's Office In Protest of MasterCard IDs
Portland State University's new 'student identification' card. Hundreds of students gathered in the Park Blocks November 23, finally storming President Bernstein's office in protest of the university's decision to replace campus identification with debit cards carrying MasterCard logos. Bearing signs with slogans like "I am not a profit margin," students remained in Bernstein's office for more than an hour, spilling out into the halls and loudly demanding that PSU break its contract with HigherOne, the Connecticut bank supplying the cards.

Several people spoke at the rally, including Gary Rusk from the national organization Commercial Alert and several students. Debit cards were publicly destroyed, to great cheers from the audience.

New Hampshire recount update from Nader campaign
In a letter we received on Friday, the Secretary of State of New Hampshire has required us to provide $12,000 by this Wednesday to continue the next phase of the recount effort. We plan to send the requested funds in the next day. The next phase of our recount in New Hampshire will begin on November 29 and should take two days to complete. We will report the outcome to you early next week.

Like many Americans we have questions about the vote for president in 2004. There are more irregularities reported every day. We have been closely following these reports, especially in Ohio and Florida.

Nader-Camejo believes every vote should be counted correctly. Unlike the Democratic Party's abdication here, those are not just words for us - they require action to ensure every vote - be it write-in, provisional, absentee, paper or electronic -- is counted regardless of whether it affects outcomes at the national, state and local levels. Therefore, we are looking at reports of irregularities in the vote count not just in New Hampshire but in other states to determine what steps, if any, are possible or required to protect the vote.

J20 Day of Action NEW Portland Anti-Inauguration Day of Action organizing Website ONLINE now --- j20pdx.net!
Spokescouncil planning meeting at Liberty Hall: Sunday December 5th -- Noon.

Whether you're a progressive democrat, a green party activist, a secessionist, or an anarchist one thing should be clear: the Bush cadre is our greatest enemy. No hope for improving, changing, or eliminating the current system can exist as long as they hold power.

On January 20th people around the country and the planet will be organizing a day to fully manifest the ongoing and daily growing resistance to their global tyranny. Through both street protests and autonomous, decentralized direct action around Portland, let's mark the inauguration with a day that challenges of the supremacy of the Empire.

Let this day serve as a wake up to liberals, Democrats, and others opposing Bush: the time for escalating resistance is upon us. This day will not be a about a singular protest in the streets, but about creating a rallying cry for the long struggle ahead of us.

Litigating the Election
From the open publishing newswire: Without much fanfare, a number of lawyers are busy mounting court challenges to the election. Lawsuits have been filed and other actions are being taken in Ohio and Florida, the two key electoral states. Members of Congress have demanded a General Accountability Office investigation of the election. The largest Freedom of Information Act request in the nation's history has been launched, and other efforts are in the works.
Local activists thank Indymedia for sElection Fraud stories; Invite others to join their fight
From the open publishing newswire: Given the certainty that Diebold has been rigging American elections in the past, the extreme likelihood that election fraud occurred on November 2nd becomes an absolute certainty. Indymedia is therefore to be complimented for its seminal valiance in reporting what the rest of the media are attempting to cover up. Indymedia is a friend of the people in their effort to restore the conditions of independence upon which this country was first founded. Indymedia represents the true America. Until the rest of the media follow the lead of such valiant champions of the people as Indymedia and the SF Bay View, the cravenly unresponsive rest of the media are to be held in contempt by the sovereign American people.

Homophobia: A Social Disease
There are no queer teen suicides, only queer teen murders. Anyone who espouses anti-gay rhetoric, anyone who says it's unnatural to love someone of the same sex, anyone who calls someone a faggot or a dyke maliciously, anyone who does not challenge heterosexuality as a cultural norm, is implicated in the deaths of queer teenagers who take their own lives. Those deaths are not suicides, they're murders. The young people are just doing to their bodies what others have already done to their souls. They don't kill themselves. Christians kill them. Television writers kill them. Big Red gum commercials kill them. Their parents kill them. Their schools kill them. I kill them and so do you.

We need to move beyond confronting homophobia to challenging heterosexism. When we don't challenge exclusionary sex education lessons, when we don't cross dress, when we don't act on our sexual desires and curiosities, when we are ignorant about intersexuality and transgenderism, we are braiding the nooses upon which queer teens hang. Cascadians explore Regional Autonomy
For a long time people have talked about Cascadia rising up and seceeding from the union. Some say we should ask Canada to take us in, others aspire to a life free from governance by someone outside the community.
some have questions:

The broad cross section of people being drawn to this struggle are being drawn because they lack hope. We see the ideal of a socially just state and are drawn to it like moths to a flame. But will our desire to taste liberty get us burned? The democratic party crumbled under the might, and in some measure, burden of corporate facism in america. People are bitter. Actavists that months ago would call the cops if they saw us at a protest, are openly debating insurection.
[ original article ]

Let us secede. Let us recognize that this region is being economically and culturally raped by the rest of the U.S., and put a stop to it. Let us establish a true American nation, one that is not a superpower through military domination but rather a world leader through cooperation and fair trade with the rest of the American nations - Mexico, Canada, and the peoples of Central and South America; and indeed by recognizing the special role and cultural riches the First Peoples of this region still carry. We will still be Americans, but will no longer be part of the failure that is the U.S.A. [ original article ]

Report-back from Democracy Is Dying gathering
Saturday afternoon, November 20, 2004, citizens disgusted with the U.S. election system gathered in downtown Portland to voice this discontent. At Northwest Park and Jefferson, people listened to music and waited for a funeral procession to march up from downtown. When this procession arrived, with painted white faces and a somber tones, a moment of silence was announced by the ringing of a Buddhist gong, whereby the people lined up and deposited previously prepared letters to the Oregonian addressing the lack of coverage of what should be the story of the century, rampant voter fraud and voter disenfranchisement which took place in the recent 2004 national election.

After several people spoke, a few of the organizers as well as some of those who were there in support, the gathering marched down to the Oregonian offices. Here amongst chants voicing their disapproval and outrage at Corporate Media cowardice, the letters were counted before being turned over to the Oregonian. The total was 96 letters.

AUDIO FILE from event
The 30 minute file contains speakers who addressed the crowd, moderated by Elizebeth Atly of Code Pink Portland. The majority of those speaking were people from the crowd who took advantage of the open mike offered by the organizers. Organizers offered brief remarks also... The voices who spoke at the gathering were eloquent, passionate and disgusted with both the fraudulent election and Corporate Media's refusal to publish accurate and detailed accounts of widespread problems. Many expressed concern that if this is allowed to pass unchallenged, Democracy, as we know it in this country, will die.

Revisiting the Tryptophan scare of 1989
I've been thinking about this a lot lately. Maybe it's because Thanksgiving always brings on a lot of talk about turkey, which if eaten (ew) instead of allowed to live, is high in tryptophan. Or maybe it's because of the biotech book I'm reading. Whatever the reason, remember the tryptophan scare? Do you know what caused it? Chances are, you don't.

It was 1989. A mysterious outbreak of a bizarre and deadly disease began quietly enough at first. Doctors named the new disease Eosinophila Myalgia Syndrome (EMS). In some people it seemed like a bad episode of the flu, but in others it became much more severe. It caused paralysis, neurological problems, heart problems, painful muscular aches, headaches, fatigue, memory loss, cognitive defects, swollen, cracked skin, and a host of other nasty symptoms. Dozens of people actually died from it.

It made front page news when the disease was eventually traced to a popular dietary supplement, the amino acid L-Tryptophan. The FDA issued an immediate recall of all the tryptophan in the country, and instituted a ban on the importation of the supplement. Panic erupted, as millions of people had been taking Tryptophan for many years for conditions such as anxiety, depression, PMS, and insomnia. Some people worried that they, too, might get sick. Others feared that the conditions for which they had taken it would return if they could not get more.

MasterCard Student IDs Incite Boycott and Walkout
  • WHO: PSU students, professors, and community leaders
  • WHAT: Class walk-out: Day of Action protests
  • WHEN: Tuesday, November 23, 2004 12:00 to 1:00 p.m.
  • WHERE: PSU South Park Blocks
PSU has signed a contract to change all of its student campus id cards to MasterCards. There is no opt-out, and students are mad. A boycott has been announced, and a rally is planned for this Tuesday (November 23).

"Financial aid is sacred to many of us," said student Sascha Krader, "It's not like the privatization of other campus areas such as food services. It has a profound effect on student life." The decision to sign a contract with Higher One was made without any attempt to involve students in the process, including student representatives and organizations.

Over 2,000 students at Portland State University are organized in a boycott and prepare for a walkout in protest of their new Campus ID Cards. The debit cards, emblazoned with a MasterCard logo, were mailed to students this week from the Connecticut-based "virtual bank" HigherOne. Students aim to have their university's contract with Higher One terminated.

Three Local Restaurants Drop Foie Gras
duck in tiny cage, waiting to be made into foie gras What a week! Mr. Hurley agreed to take foie gras off his menu Saturday night after activists visited his restaurant every Friday and Saturday night for 3 weekends in a row, Wednesday The Heathman Restaurant agreed to take foie gras off of their menu on National Day of Action Against Force Feeding and now, the owner of Brasserie Montmartre has told me they have removed foie gras from their menu and will not be serving it any longer.

We are 4 for 4 here! This is big! But, there are 4 businesses left that we know of that still sell foie gras. Restaurants are The Blue Hour and Navarre and grocers are City Market NW and The Pasta Works. We just recently sent a video and letter to Navarre and Pasta Works so we feel we need to give them time to review the information before following up with them. We will do that early next week.

We are planning our next strategy and will be in touch very soon. We will not be having any demos this weekend. We feel energized. We are anxious to keep the campaign momentum going.

Let's hear it for that other Clinton: The Virtues of Localism
I was glancing at The Oregonian newspaper headlines recently, and noticed something about the new Clinton Library opening up. At first, I thought they meant Clinton Street here in Southeast Portland. I got excited about the prospect of a new library opening in one of my favorite parts of town.

So what's the significance of this? I got confused from the headline, and quickly figured out they were talking about Bill Clinton, ex-US president, not Clinton Street here in Portland, that nice, mixed business/residential district of pleasant sidewalk cafes, an independent moviehouse and other mom-and-pop businesses, attractive houses and leafy streets. And I smiled to myself.

I smiled because, being a newcomer but having grown quite fond of Portland, I considered it a victory within my own consciousness that I would make such a mistake.

Final Report on the International Caravan for Justice in Juarez and Chihuahua City
Commemorating the dead at the border fence As I detailed in my last report, The International Caravan for Justice in Juarez and Chihuahua City reached Juarez on October 31, 2004 to demand justice in the cases of hundreds of murdered young women. This group of activists, teachers, students, researchers, and journalists from around the U.S. and Mexico had finally reached its destination, and we then had 5 days of activities and meetings to attend. It's hard to tell what lasting results would come from these efforts, but there are signs that some positive steps forward may finally be at hand.

Coverage and analysis about the US strikes on Fallujah, Iraq in the past days. A three hour news program that draws on multiple sources, including scathing critique of corporate media coverage, and highlighting of various independant media coverage that focused on the assault.

The second half of the show includes reports from domestic and international demonstrations against the strikes on Fallujah. Including a demonstration in Nablus, Palestine where citizens used fire to write "Fallujah" (in Arabic) on a nearby mountainside that could be seen throughout the city of Nablus. Iraq... Errr, Iran Has Weapons Of Mass Destruction
Leading up to the U.S. war to conquer Iraq, there was a barage of Iraqi 'weapons of mass destruction' propaganda put out by the U.S. government and blindly parroted by the corporate media. As well as the chemical and biological weapons scares, there were the lies about nuclear weapons programs, and fake stories of attempts by Iraq to obtain nuclear materials. The U.S. government played on racist fears claiming that Iraqis just could not be trusted, that they are irrational and would never stop trying to destroy our freedoms.

Now the same thing is happening with Iran. Pressure from Europe has helped create a deal where Iran would cease certain uranium enrichment efforts, in order to avoid possible U.N. sanctions pushed by the U.S. The U.S. is cool on the deal and is setting the stage for an attack. Colin Powell claims there is intelligence that shows that Iran is actively working on a program to enable its missiles to carry nuclear warheads. In an interview published Sept 26th in the Chicago Tribune, Democratic Senator Barack Obama, in a familiar and blatantly racist statement about the inabiility of Pakistan and Iran to negotiate rationally, said he would favor missile strikes on Iran.

Olympia protests the Militarization of the Port, the Iraq Occupation
Two people were arrested as police in riot gear responded to about 100 anti-war protesters at the Port of Olympia on Thursday. The protesters beat drums and banged stones in rhythm against chain-link fencing separating the Port Plaza from a dock, showing their opposition to an Army shipment of equipment from the port to the Iraqi war zone. The demonstrators flashed peace signs with their fingers and chanted a variety of anti-war slogans. At one point, some of them ripped a section of chain-link fencing from posts and briefly trespassed on off- limits port property.

The protest occurred as the SS Cape Intrepid, a Navy transport ship, loaded helicopters, trucks and containers bound from Fort Lewis to the war zone. The ship had pulled into port early Thursday morning. The protesters vowed to attend Monday's port commission meeting in hopes of persuading the commission to stop accepting shipments to and from the war zone. This week's shipment is the fourth war-related shipment this year at the port, the first military shipments to pass through the Olympia port since 1987.

Daring To Be Radically Human in 'The Hood': The Beauty of Creative Nonviolence
Another experiment in creative, yet confrontive nonviolence successfully out-manuvered thugs (and fears of violence) after an open challenge from anarchists. More than 50 people participated. A Crucial Arts expert-in-training literally "pushed da envelope" in one of Portland's 'Hoods.

PDX: The thug in all of us, in our heads and expressed in myriad ways was beautifully ju-jitsued and derailed Thursday (today) in NE Portland thanks to "key timing" and the "radicalness" of a method of nonviolent confrontation which blows traditional nonviolent "pacifism" out of the water as far as the concept of DESIRE ARMED is concerned.

"Its a form of art in process, really," said Chaz d (distant cousin of the infamous Chuck D.), "and the 'key timing' is the *suddenness* of our appearances, which have been going down all over the USA. It's a provocation, to use fancy-buttoned words. It's a way of interacting with people (instead of always 'to' or 'against' people) that allows us to escape our gripping fears and make *community* wherever and whenever we desire!"
