Cascadia Policy Wines and Dines Corporate Shill John Stossel
ABC's fact-challenged antienvironmental crusader John Stossel cavorted with cronies at Portland's posh Multnomah Athletic Club earlier this month, courtesy Cascadia Policy Institute, Portland's resident procorporate "Libertarian thinktank." John Borowski crashed the party and gives us the details. [See also: I Didn't Call John Stossel a "Corporate Shill", But I Should Have!]

Media Maintains Status Quo
The mass media's real "job," unbeknownst to the general public, is and has always been to protect the status quo, that is, to protect the interests of the governing classes. What currently threatens their legitimacy (and that of the ruling classes) is not that they have not been doing their job in the last few years, but rather that the public has begun to realize that the real function of the mass media (and the government) is to work against the public interest. This growing realization is a terrifying prospect for the ruling classes. Hence they would do anything, including lamenting their own personal and individual "failures," to prevent such a ruinous outcome for the system.

To restate the matter, there has not been any failure as such. In the last few years, the mass media and the government have been doing exactly what they were designed to do within the context of the capitalist system. The lamentations are meant to keep people from realizing this fundamental fact.

SHAC 7 Trial-Week 2
>>Monday, February 13, 2006

The SHAC 7 trial kicked off February 6th, with a strong protest of about 80-100 people, despite attempts by Homeland Security to prevent the demonstration from happening.

The first week of trial is now over and the case is moving along quite fast. Jury selection started Monday and the full jury was picked by Tuesday afternoon.

The prosecutor, Charles McKenna, opened with a dramatic, yet dull statement, that dragged on for 30 minutes. Each of the defense attorneys had time to make opening statements, calling attention to the gross misrepresentations in the governments opening, as well as the fact that these defendants are on trial for nothing more than reporting on the actions of others.

The week saw approximately 15 witnesses for the government, including the Huntingdon Life Sciences' Managing Director Brian Cass and other HLS employees. Despite allegations by the government that the SHAC USA site was "causing" people to take direct action against these employee's homes, most testified that either nothing illegal had happened at their homes or that their home addresses had not been posted on the SHAC USA website prior to any direct action. Of course, none could say that any of the defendants had done anything illegal to them.

Protest - Tuesday 21st - Why JUDY CAMERON’s research will never help anyone
These studies would be laughable if the consequences weren't so grim for us as well as the monkeys. We have paid millions of tax dollars for Cameron's experiments, which at best duplicate what we already know from human observation. Lab monkeys are not even good models for normal monkeys because of the stressful and unnatural conditions of a lab. Common sense tells us that they cannot teach us about complex human social and psychological phenomena. Cameron has even planned to learn about human divorce by creating fake nuclear monkey families and removing the father to see the effects.
While OHSU's primate center gets more and more tax dollars, programs that actually help people are disappearing because of budget cuts. From 2000 through 2003, Cameron received $8,792,889 in National Institutes of Health grants, as well as portions of the OHSU primate center's base grants. The primate center is in the process of a massive expansion.

Cameron explains in her own words what is wrong with her experiments, commenting on the surrogate parent study: "The results are intriguing because they match observations on humans who lose their parents... Another experiment suggested a way to ease the stress: adoption. ... This probably translates to humans"

WHERE IS THE JUSTICE? 18.02.2006 15:54
"We Don't Need To Have An Eye For An Eye. We Have The Courts."
Police Accountability In an article from today's (February 18, 2006) Oregonian, Joseph Rose writes about Charles Porter,a man in Springfield who, frustrated by the clearing of a police officer who killed his son, allegedly hired a hit man to kill that officer. I want to say up front that I do not condone killings of any kind, and murder is murder no matter what the motivation, but this is what can come of a system that straight-arms citizens. I have witnessed the frustration and pain caused by the results of a grand jury investigation and an "internal investigation" subsequent to the killing of Fouad Kaady on September 8, 2005. There is no connection between the Kaady case and Charles Porter, except the wrongful death of a son and the unconditional clearing of the killers.

What happens when a closed system investigates itself? Victims are left in the cold, hurt and angry and unable to find answers to their anguished questions. Doors are closed to them and they are expected to accept the results of those investigations without further "bother". This is just not working. Those of us who have read the reports and seen the pictures regarding the Kaady case are still very angry, still full of questions and some of us can even understand the reasons why Charles Porter was driven to his desperate act. This is tragic. This is not necessary. There has to be a better way of investigating questionable shootings, such as those committed against unarmed citizens.

World Social Forum Report Back from Venezuela
Venezuela: Another World is Happening
Community Report Back from the World Social Forum in Caracas and 23 de Enero

Twenty-three Portland activists have returned from Caracas, Venezuela where they attended the 2006 World Social Forum (WSF). The World Social Forum, whose slogan is "another world is possible," is a yearly gathering at which over 100,000 progressive activists, non-profits, and community organizations from around the world debate alternatives to corporate globalization.

At this year's Forum, anti-war activist Cindy Sheehan joined Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez to condemn the Iraq war and call for the assembled activists to work together and build a just economic order. Chavez, as usual, mockingly referred to Bush exclusively as "Mr. Danger." The first Forum took place in 2001 in Porto Alegre, Brazil. It was intended as a counterpoint to the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, where some of the most powerful economic players in the world meet each year. Since then, the WSF has grown so much that organizers decided to hold this year's forum in three separate locations: one in Caracas, Venezuela; one in Banako, Mali; and one in Karachi, Pakistan.

Report from the Common Ground Speaking Event
sakura crowd Kerul Dyer and Sakura Kone' spoke at Reflections Coffee House (446 NE Killingsworth St.) on Sunday February 12th. Sakura came in place of Common Ground founder, Malik Rahim. Malik deeply wanted to come, but on saturday morning his aunt died and he had to stay to make funeral preparations for her. Sakura came on just a couple hours notice, for which we were deeply thankful.

After a video about Common Ground and the relief effort, Sakura sat down to talk to folks about what was really going down in New Orleans. After a short talk, he and Kerul opened the floor for questions from the packed room.

The overlying theme of this event was to help establish a "Common Ground Portland" ... or something of the sort. Common Ground rose up AFTER the hurricane and in response the the governments dissmisal of poor people. The idea is to start organizing for something catastrophic NOW so that we have a network already set up that even if the government decided to care, we wouldnt need them.

Craig Rosebraugh Subpoenaed to Federal Grand Jury in Eugene, Oregon; ELF Investigation Continues
PORTLAND, OR - On Tuesday, February 14, 2006, Craig Rosebraugh received a subpoena to testify before a federal grand jury currently convened in Eugene, Oregon investigating a series of actions committed by the Earth Liberation Front. Federal agents approached Rosebraugh as he sat in his vehicle and demanded he roll down his window, presumably to accept the subpoena. He refused, rolled up the windows, locked the doors, and cranked the stereo. After yelling at him, the agents left the subpoena on his windshield.

The grand jury subpoena - the eighth Rosebraugh has received in the last nine years - commands him to appear in Eugene to testify at 9:00am on March 16, 2006.

Investigating ELF actions that occurred between 1996 and 2001, the grand jury convened in Eugene is responsible for indicting eleven people in January 2006 in connection with ELF activity throughout the Pacific Northwest and Colorado.

Rosebraugh served as an unofficial spokesperson for the ELF from 1997 through 2001. Receiving anonymous communiqués from the underground activists, he released the information to the news media and conducted interviews internationally in support of the group. In 2000, Rosebraugh co-formed the North American Earth Liberation Front Press Office (NAELFPO), a media resource organization based in Portland, Oregon. In February 2002, Rosebraugh was subpoenaed and appeared in front of the US Congress in a subcommittee hearing on "ecoterrorism." He pled the Fifth Amendment at the proceeding to 54 out of 56 questions, effectively stonewalling the hearing.

Schumacher Furs Protest Report (Bloody Valentine Reloaded), February 11
The real price of fur must be measured in death not dollars... The love could not be felt at Schumacher Furs last Saturday. The Valentine's Day sale appeared to be a gigantic flop as customers not fooled by those cute red hearts and colorful balloons in the windows chose to spend their money on less cruel gifts for their loved ones. Something tortured and dead just doesn't seem to say "I love you" to most people.

Every year a well-organized fur trade spends millions to glamorize the fur coat and to mask the real price of fur- pain, mutilation, and violent death for approximately 40 million animals per year. See http://www.furisdead.com for info and videos about what happens to animals in the fur trade.

There were two arrests at the demo this Saturday for the heinous crimes of spitting on the sidewalk and allegedly using sidewalk chalk too close to a department store (Nordstroms private property). These are terrorist tactics obviously gleaned from al-Qaeda. These crimes resulted in handcuffs and police car rides down to headquarters. As the protest grows larger with more and more new people turning out to express their outrage at the unregulated cruelty of the fur industry, there needs to be education as to legal rights and laws regarding protesting and freedom of speech. In Defense of Animals will be holding an informational meeting open to everyone on Sunday, February 26th at Free Geek (1731 SE 10th Ave)from 4:30 to 6:30 pm. The topics will include Legal Observing, Jail Support, and Knowing Your Rights as an Activist. Presenters will include Dan from Copwatch, an unnamed attorney, and Patrick from Lewis and Clark law school. [ Read More ]

Corporate Media Lies AGAIN to Protect Killer Cops
kaady family Readers of this site know the story by now. The police shot and killed yet another injured, unarmed man. And last month, the killers of Fouad Kaady were "cleared" by a bogus investigation that concluded that, although officers attacked a man they knew to be unarmed, they did nothing wrong because they followed procedures. Throughout this ordeal, the corporate media has done what it could to protect the police state from any accountability. The nightmare continues. Emblazoned across the pages of this morning's Oregonian is yet another reminder that the corporate media's lies are dangerous to us all. I'm speaking of the yellow journalism of "reporter" Andy Parker. (See below for Mr. Parker's contact information. You will likely want to give him a call.)

Ignoring the CCSO's own piss-poor excuse for an "invesitation," Mr. Parker inexplicably asserts that the bran-eating, Bible-reading, hard-working Deputy Willard found himself "staring across his handgun at Kaady, an enraged, bloody man who was threatening to kill him." Clearly, Mr. Parker did not do his homework. If he had, he would have learned in the CCSO's own words, in Willard's own words, that Mr. Kaady had been sitting on the ground "in a catatonic state" ... Report Back: Clackamas County Commissioners' Meeting - Thursday, Feb 16
On Thursday about twenty people attended the Clackamas County Commissioners Meeting to testify regarding Fouad Kaady. Each person who wished to speak was given three minutes to express his or her concerns about the way the law enforcement officers handled the encounter with Fouad on September 8, 2005. Alton McDonald from National Action Network came from Tacoma to attend. He and about nine other people spoke. Some suggested that the formation of a citizens' review board should be formed so that in the future questions about police shootings could enjoy a more open forum. [ Read More ]

5 million acres saved!! in Great Bear Rainforest
Thanks, to all of the thousand of activist who have over the years worked to protect the Great Bear Rainforest. Whether you stood outside a Home Depot, Lumbermens, Lowes, or one of the many timber targets of the Great Bear Campaign, with a sign, dropped a banner or raised a ruckus, thanks! You are a part of the team that just protected 5 million acres of rainforest from all logging, which is twice the size of Yellowstone National Park covering over 100 river valleys.

It's taken almost ten years of pressure, negotiation, tremendous effort and lots of help from you, but it's finally official: the Great Bear Rainforest Agreement has been approved by the government of British Columbia! Created by ForestEthics and its allies in unprecedented cooperation with First Nations (aboriginal groups), logging companies, corporations and local communities, the agreement will protect over 5 million acres of rainforest from all logging.

And as amazing as that is, it's only part of the story. The agreement also means that a new system of sustainable forestry, Ecosystem Based Management, will be put into place throughout the entire 16 million acres of the Great Bear. And it means First Nations and local communities will get $120 million in funding for initiatives like ecotourism and eco-friendly businesses—as long as the Canadian federal government meets its promise to contribute its $30 million share. To find out more about the details of the agreement, visit forestethics.org.

"Eye of the Storm" Video Available Online
The Eye of the Storm Eye of the Storm uses video footage shot by the police to confirm how the police target citizens engaged in constitutionally protected acts of protest for harassment, assault, and arrest. The police, by their own admission, assault law-abiding protesters without provocation then lie about being provoked. These lies were carried and repeated ad-nauseum by the corporate media without any regard for the truth. The corporate media is shown being complicit, even supportive, of flagrant police misconduct. Those perceived as "leaders" by the police are often singled out for surveillance, assault, and arrest regardless of the fact that those individuals have broken no laws and committed no crimes. The police kept this footage despite laws prohibiting the collection of information on individuals engaged in political dissent. The police stated that activist video footage only told one "side" of the story, now everyone can see the other "side".

This tree is on the Scott River, a tributary to the Klamath that is for sale The Bush administration shocked Americans this week by proposing to sell of 200,000 acres of public lands to pay for rural schools in his budget. The Klamath National Forest would be the hardest hit in the national with about 50 square miles to be sold from the Klamath River. Under Bush's plan, the Forest Service would sell 200,000 acres of public lands, including 85,465 acres in California.

Shockingly, more than a third of California's acreage would come from the Klamath National Forest.

This plan calls for halving the amount of money going to rural communities under the County Payments program, and re-linking the money to logging on public lands. The Bush proposal calls for selling off approximately $800 million worth of America's forestlands-lands that were set aside as a legacy for our children and grandchildren.

Please take a few moments to write or email your Senators and tell them that you oppose the Bush administration's cynical plan which will destroy the County Payments program, create more conflict in rural communities over logging and sell off America's public lands. Also please write letters to the editors in your local area about this tragic selling of our National Heritage.

The end of Channel 1!!!

About 4 months ago, I wrote here that a corperation called "Channel One" had been broadcasting its ad-loaded crap in my classroom. Every day at the end of "study time", the tv in our class would automaticaly come on and play Channel 1, a corperation that makes schools, in exchange for free tv's, play a 12 min. "news" program with 2 min. of commercials.* Now, possibly only temporaraly, but still, C1 has stopped in our class, not because we have called to complain several times, but because people were talking during the broadcast. Even if this action is only temporaraly stopped in our class, my principle assures us that channel one will be removed at the end of the year. Wanna know why? because we spoke out. It has been broadcasted in that school for 15 years and will finaly be permanantly removed because we spoke out.

Petrodollars and Nuclear Weapons Proliferation: Understanding the Planned Assault on Iran
Since December 2005, however, there have been much firmer indications both that the planned attack will go ahead in late March 2006, and also that the Cheney-Bush administration intends it to involve the use of nuclear weapons.

It is important to understand the nature and scale of the war crimes that are being planned—and no less important to recognize that, as in the case of the Bush regime's assault on Iraq, the pretexts being advanced to legitimize this intended aggression are entirely fraudulent. Unless the lurid fantasies of people like former Undersecretary for Arms Control and International Security and now Ambassador to the United Nations John Bolton count as evidence—and Bolton's pronouncements on the weaponry supposedly possessed by Iraq, North Korea, Cuba and Venezuela show him to be less acquainted with truth than Jean Harlow was with chastity—there is no evidence that Iran has or has ever had any nuclear weapons development program. Claims to the contrary, however loudly they may have been trumpeted by Fox News, CNN, or The New York Times, are demonstrably false.

Kevin Tubbs Detention Hearing Report
Kevin Tubbs was denied release on bail pending trial (Monday, Feb. 6th) in the US District Court in Eugene.

Magistrate Judge Coffin in his ruling stated that the charges are extreme and violent and that he rejects the notion that intent to only destroy property poses no threat to human beings. He said that time-delay devices were used and that all the defendants were very lucky that no one had been killed or they would be facing homicide charges. He said, "Arson is extremely violent." He said to Friedman that he found it ironic that "your client is cooperating" and that for the released defendants he had taken into account the far out date set for trial, but that Tubbs admits committing the crimes and therefore will not be released. He said one thing he may take into account which could change his mind was any pending plea agreements offered by the government. He recessed court and asked for counsel to meet at that time in his chambers to discuss possible deals. (Any deals made today should be available in public records soon.)

The pacifist strategy of Jesus - Part 1. The lost message
We know that the cross was an instrument of torture employed by the ancient Roman state. The Roman economy was arranged as an hierarchical male patriarchy, wherein a small clique of dominant male patriarchs accumulated wealth which was the product of slave labor. No Roman patriarch could get as rich as one hundred or one thousand based only upon their own labor, for this would require them to work one hundred or one thousand times more, which is not possible, which is why the Roman patriarchy relied upon slaves and forced labor in order to produce the wealth required to make the patriarch rich. Slavery is not a voluntary occupation, but rather such a system of domination requires brutish force and terrorism to maintain itself, and for this reason the cross was employed as the instrument of terror. There are many ways to murder another human being. A quick blow over the head would do the trick, but such a death did not incorporate the essential element of terror which is incorporated in such a gruesome form of execution as the crucifixion.

Therefore, to be crucified is to become the victim of terrorist attack. This is obvious. We know that when Spartacus led a failed slave uprising in the Roman Empire, five thousand rebel slaves were crucified alongside all the roads leading into Rome as a demonstration of patriarchal power. According to accounts of the time, the bodies were then left to rot on the crosses, and the stench was unbearable. To be crucified was the consequence of challenging the power of the Roman state. To attack the practice of crucifixion was an attack on the economic foundations of the patriarchal order.

For this reason we know that in its earliest form, what became 'Christianity' was an attack on the Roman patriarchy and was also a sword aimed at the heart of the Roman economic system.

When: Tuesday, February 14, 2006; 7-9 p.m.
Where: It's a Beautiful Pizza; 3342 SE Belmont Ave., Portland

Details: Long-time Portland activist Joe Keating has dedicated his life to making Portland and Oregon a better place. On Feb. 8 a fire broke out in Joe's home, taking the life of a friend staying with Joe at the time and seriously damaging Joe's house. The house, unfortunately, was not insured and while repairable, will cost far more than Joe has.

Now is the time to pay back a little of what Joe has given for us over all these years. We are holding a community benefit for Joe Keating at It's a Beautiful Pizza 7-9 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 14. There will be music and stories from Joe's many friends. Our goal is to raise as much as we can to put towards the cost of repairing Joe's home and helping him through this difficult time.

I know Joe from way back. Joe never rests when it comes to the Ancient Forests. Joe is one of the best organizers I know and has always had the most positive of attitudes when it comes to division in the ranks. Joe got a bus together called "Cool."

Fouad Kaady Demo Report Back
This family is wonderful. I learned today, from Rachid Kaady, that the name "Fouad" means "heart" in Lebanese. Somehow, that seems very fitting. Because, although I never met the young man whose life was taken by the police, his presence was nevertheless everywhere today. In the passionate words of his cousins and friends, in the gentle hugs from his father, and in the people who will not let his story fade away, there was surely a lot of heart in Clackamas County this afternoon. And from the bottom of my own heart, I thank each and every one of you who came to stand together on the doorstep of the CCSO, to say we've had enough.

Alejandro Queral, from the Northwest Constitutional Rights Center, began the event by eloquently explaining why we came. "This is not about retaliation," he said. "This is about justice. This is about feeling safe in our communities. This is about holding police accountable for their actions." Alejandro expressed shock and outrage about what happened to Fouad Kaady, and demanded transparency from the police. "We can't have officers investigating themselves," he said. "I hope that you will join me in demanding that Sheriff Roberts create a mechanism by which incidents of this nature can be reviewed by the citizens of this county, and where the entire investigation is made public so that there can be scrutiny of the police department."

Immediately following Alejandro's speech, Alton McDonald of the National Action Network gave a rousing call to action. "Why did the police react in such a brutal and vicious way upon this young man, who needed medical help?" He asked. "Why didn't they call for a paramedic? Why did they do this? The question has yet to be answered." Alton pointed out that the way the police have handled this incident is the way they always handle such incidents: They spend days working on cover stories and spinning lies through the corporate media. They do not seek justice. "This facility," he said, "That was built with tax payer's dollars to protect and serve the community, has now become a place where evil prevails. A place where injustice prevails. The People's rights have been violated by people who work in that building, who are paid by our tax dollars. So I ask you, the citizens of Oregon, is this right?" The crowd answered with a resounding "No!"

Bush's lack of vision on health care
Profile of a lack of vision: Bush addresses health care in the State of the Union

Joe Mahoney and the Oregon Action Health Care committee joined together to watch the President deliver his fifth State of the Union address. Prior to the speech, aides said it would focus on health care. So the group waited, hoping to hear a plan to reduce the cost of health care and increase access. They hoped the President would announce plans to fix the troubled Medicare Prescription Drug plan. Instead, after 46 minutes they heard less than a minute on health care.

At a time when 60% of Americans disapprove of his work on health care, Bush still isn't proposing anything more than a repackaging of his Social Security reforms. While providing more tax breaks for wealthy Americans he will leave the lowest-income and chronically ill patients to wither away.

"As a nurse, I am appalled at President Bush's lack of vision in resolving our nation's health care crisis. Simply providing tax breaks to those who can already afford health care will make the problem worse. We need common-sense solutions that reduce costs and increase access to comprehensive health care services." Judy Lebens, Hillsboro.

Reportback on Tues, Feb 7th Town Hall mtg on Healthcare

Below are my vastly imperfect notes on the Town Hall meeting. It was filmed and will be aired on cable access and is worth viewing mostly for the audience's comments and questions... and for reference and posterity in these dark days of dwindling healthcare. I forgot to mention in the body of the article that Kate Brown suggested she would seriously consider mandatory health insurance like we now have laws mandating auto insurance.
