In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Most Merciful
Mr. George Bush, For sometime now I have been thinking, how one can justify the undeniable contradictions that exist in the international arena. Many questions remain unanswered. Can one be a follower of Jesus Christ, the great Messenger of God (PBUH), Feel obliged to respect human rights, Present liberalism as a civilization model, Announce one's opposition to the proliferation of nuclear weapons and WMDs, Make "War on Terror" his slogan, And finally, Work towards the establishment of a "unified international community" a community which Christ and the virtuous of the Earth will one day govern, But at the same time, Have countries attacked.
On the pretext of the existence of WMDs, this great tragedy came to engulf both the peoples of the occupied and the occupying country. Later it was revealed that no WMDs existed to begin with. Of course Saddam was a murderous dictator. But the war was not waged to topple him..He was toppled along the way towards another goal; nevertheless the people of the region are happy about it. I point out that throughout the many years of the imposed war on Iran Saddam was supported by the West.
The lives, reputations and possessions of people destroyed and on the slight chance of the presence of a few criminals in a village, city, or convoy for example, the entire village, city or convoy set ablaze.Or because of the possibility of the existence of WMDs in one country, it is occupied, around one hundred thousand people killed, its water sources, agriculture and industry destroyed, close to 180,000 foreign troops put on the ground, sanctity of private homes of citizens broken, and the country pushed back perhaps fifty years.
Mr. President, You might know that I am a teacher. My students ask me how can these actions be reconciled with the values outlined at the beginning of this letter and duty to the tradition of Jesus Christ (PBUH), the Messenger of peace and forgiveness? There are prisoners in Guantanamo Bay that have not been tried, have no legal representation, their families cannot see them and are obviously kept in a strange land outside their own country. There is no international monitoring of their conditions and fate. No one knows whether they are prisoners, POWs, accused or criminals. European investigators have confirmed the existence of secret prisons in Europe too. Young people, university students, and ordinary people have many questions about the phenomenon of Israel.
The french protests some weeks ago inspired many here in germany. More than one year ago a "Summer of Resistance" against social cuts and cutbacks in the educational sector was called in Hamburg, which became a nationwide motto in the student protest against student fees. Now, one year later, its summer again, with temperatures over 20°C, and a new wave of protest is about to start.
Over and over there are spontaneous demonstrations, i.e. in the towns of Muenster, Marburg, Giessen, Duisburg, Frankfurt and Kiel. Occupations of university-buildings in Cologne and Bochum increased the pressure, even if the police cleared the building in Cologne after 10 days. Strong messages to the government and the university-leadership were sent, as hundreds of students stormed or disrupted sessions of the academic senat in Cologne, Bonn and Bocum. In Cologne the president of the university could only "escape" by the help of the cops who beat many students on this day.
In Hamburg many participated in a "student block" on the mayday parade/demonstration behind the front-banner "Campus Guerilla" and showed their will for protest this year as well. A barricade-contest has been carried out and was later on tested in practical experience when the main university building was barricaded.
In Frankfurt on the main, around 4.000 students marched through the city center, blocked several streets and built smaller barricades. An invasion of the main train station was only prevented by a massive police force. On the next day (May 12th) the students marched again and tried to storm a credit institute (one that soon will give credit to students). On the same day up to 100 people occupied the party headquarters of the FDP and in the towns of Siegen and Duisburg rectorates were stormed and occupied.
14 People attended the Tuesday vigil at the Recruitment Center this week. Holding signs, and handing out flyers. As with the previous weeks, the response from people walking, biking, driving by was overwhelmingly positive.
Towards the end, some folks made a circle and read aloud the names of the U.S. soldiers killed this past week. Each person reads a name and how that soldier was killed. It goes around the circle until the names have all been read. The number of soldiers killed is more than the number of people reading names. I hope that the number of dead drops, and the number at the recruiting center increases. It is sad to see the list of names each week, and see their ages. Most so young, and all, dying in vain.
The threat of a peak in global oil supplies has received official attention from the City of Portland. A resolution to create a task force to investigate implications of peak oil was passed by City Council on Wednesday May 10 largely in response to activism from Portland Peak Oil, a local grassroots group. "This task force will focus on preparing Portland for a local response to impending global oil shortages," said Stephen Johnson, a volunteer with Portland Peak Oil.
"Portlanders' support for this resolution is reflected in the tremendous growth of Portland Peak Oil over the past year," says Emily Pollard, an organizer with the group. "We look forward to assisting the work of the task force and continuing to promote projects to educate the community."

Several dozen people gathered near the end of yesterday's workday at the front steps of the INS building. The diverse group included students and workers, parents and children, Christians and Socialists, Spanish and English speakers, recent immigrants and lifelong US citizens. They shared a single agenda: to send a message of opposition to the recent wave of raids and deportation of immigrant workers.

On a trip I made to Italy last year, where the prices of gasoline make ours look like a bargain, I took note of some practices that we could well adopt here. Those folks don't just jump into their cars and drive to the local grocery store solo every couple of days, they SHOP-POOL. Several (3 or 4) families carefully make lists of what is needed, and they all go TOGETHER in a van every week or two to the grocery stores and buy in one trip. Makes gasoline very cheap that way. Less wear and tear on your auto. Less traffic on the streets. Not to mention the social aspects. Everyone knows their neighbors VERY well.
Common sense... If we would all would just walk a block or two, rather than start the car and burn gasoline, it would probably pay huge dividends. Saves gas, and many health benefits of walking. (I noticed there that it was very, very rare to see an overweight individual there - unlike here in the US), and their coronary disease rate is much lower. They walk, they bike, and EVERY SINGLE LAST ONE OF THEM had fruit trees and a vegetable garden. [ Read More ]
Malik Rahim, founder of the Common Ground Collective that is doing relief work in areas devastated by Hurricane Katrina, will be speaking in Portland, OR as part of The City Repair Project's 2006 Village Building Convergence (VBC). The event will take place on Friday, May 19th at 8:05 pm at Disjecta (320 E. Burnside) and marks the kick off for 10 days of inspiring speakers at VBC. The event costs $15 with and optional vegetarian dinner available at 6:00pm for $5-10 sliding scale.
Malik Rahim is a former member of the Black Panthers and current member of the Green Party in Louisiana and helped found the Common Ground Collective in the Algiers neighborhood of New Orleans. The Algiers neighborhood was the only part of New Orleans that was not flooded and still had running water after hurricane Katrina. According to Malik, it could have held up to 40,000 refugees but local and federal officials did not move forward to help. Malik Rahim has described the the lack of organization that took place after Katrina as being a criminal act and has accused the government of deliberately ignoring the needs of lower income residents. Also... The Village Building Convergence 2006 [VBC6] invites the local community to help design and develop public restrooms in the Old Town/Chinatown neighborhood during brainstorm and design sessions on May 22 and May 30, 5 to 8 p.m., at Someday, 125 N.W. Fifth Ave. In April, PHLUSH [Public Hygiene Lets Us Stay Human (PHLUSH)] proposed six public toilet designs to the Old Town/Chinatown Neighborhood Association. Options included self-cleaning restrooms that cost $250,000 each and artist inspired mosaic toilets. The neighborhood association favored a concept designed by The City Repair Project's founder Mark Lakeman that includes an attached news stand business and public bulletin board. The Mississippi Loft developers, will once again be trying to pressure the Boise community into signing a letter of support for their four story condo project, which had already received a vote last December 2005 with, 14 yes's, 24 no's, and 23 abstaining.
Please come and again send them and the city the people's message: our neighborhood comes before your desire for profits. Please come and share with the community your voice, your stories, and your struggles, and take part in building a neighborhood and a community that everyone can be proud of and afford to be part of. Your voices have been clear and strong from the pulpits and pew--gentrification is destroying our community & we want it stopped. Now bring that voice & your vote on Monday night to the Albina Youth Opportunity School, on the corner of N Beech & N Mississippi at 7pm, and take part in community activism and a democratic process that people like Rosa Parks, Malcolm X, Angela Davis and Martin Luther King Jr fought so hard to give us a place at the decision making table.
PGE is refunding a portion of taxes collected but unpaid due to a lawsuit. Most of the money is going to customers between 1999 and 2005. If you are a current customer you don't need to take any action and will get a reduction on a future bill. If you are a former customer between 1999 and 2005, you must submit a claim.
A Former PGE Customer Claim Form is attached to the back of the notice being mailed out, or can be obtained by calling 888-279-4337.
A four-page notice has gone out to Multnomah County customers of Portland General Electric, saying that the class action lawsuit on their behalf has been settled. The case was regarding money PGE collected for the Multnomah County Business Income Tax ("Tax"), but "that were above what PGE or its parent company ended up owing and paying in Tax to Multnomah County." The settlement states that PGE will pay $10 million, most of the money going to those people who purchased electricity service from PGE between 1999 and 2005, and who were therefore paying the Tax on their PGE bills.
Cheney wants to let his Halliburton profit from more government contracts off nuclear power. Forget it! Remember the PERMANENT damage of nuclear power.
Summarizing both links below, the International Atomic Energy Agency has recently been completely discredited, even by the World Health Organization. Bizarrely, from the 1950s, the WHO is forced to have nuclear information "vetted" and coming from this NWO organization. However, even W.H.O. now balks at whitewashing IAEA's spin on Chernobyl,...[instead of accepting pro-nuclear industry corporations data from IAEA], "W.H.O. on April 20 released a document projecting a still-very-conservative 29,000 deaths....In short, the IAEA has been largely discredited... Other studies project even higher casualties. And these reports were big news across Europe
Remember Chernobyl--the world's true symbol of nuclear power: an ongoing, neverending nightmare.
1,000's clash in resistance to U.S. base expansion. May 6th - The Korean Ministry of National Defense has declared martial law in the village of Daechuri and surrounding areas in its latest attempt to seize the land slated to be property of the United States military. In an attempt to control the escalating chaos that ensued when it sent troops and riot police to evict residents and activists, the MND is conducting door to door searches and arresting people on sight. Road blockades of sand bags and police buses have been placed around the village to prevent anyone from entering or exiting. Even the press, which had prior access, is no longer allowed to document the police activities.
At least 400 people have been injured and nearly one thousand arrested since Thursday. The three days of violence has prompted criticism of the police force's conduct during the eviction. Human rights advisors to the National Police Agency described the scene as a "blood bath", and an "embarrassing moment".
May 4th, 2006 at 5:00am, the Korean Ministry of National Defense (MND) made its fourth attempt to occupy the villages of Daechuri and Doduri and crush the resistance to U.S. military base expansion. This time, they came with 12,000 riot police, 1,500 plain-clothes hired 'workers', who are notorious, right wing ex-military strike breakers, and 3,000 Korean soldiers and army engineers.
Those for impeaching President Bush and Vice President Cheney might want to attend the Portland City Council meeting next Wednesday (May 10) at 9:30 a.m. in council chambers at City Hall. That's when a Resolution to Impeach both men will be presented to city commissioners and Mayor Potter by a former Howard Dean group: Democracy for America.
They presented a similar resolution last week to Multnomah County's Commissioners—which is now pending review. At least twelve cities—including San Francisco— have passed such resolutions in the last few months. Three state legislatures—California, Vermont, and Illinois—will be voting shortly on impeachment resolutions.
U.S. Rep. David Wu is among 36 House members who, in the last few weeks, have become co-sponsors of Rep. John Conyers' bill—HR 635—which starts the impeachment process. Colleagues Earl Blumenauer, Peter DeFazio, and Darlene Hooley currently are weighing whether to become co-sponsors. Last week, the Boston Globe reported Bush has nullified at least 750 bills passed by Congress and signed by him in formal ceremonies through the little used device of secret signing statements. Rationale: He and Cheney determined they were unconstitutional.
"It is important to have unions, but police unions are used to defend racism and murderous activity on the job," said Nick D...He added his own labor union would never defend him for murdering on the job. A mother, Michelle Jeffries, testified that the Seattle Police murdered her son without proper explanation, investigation, or prosecution. "They pick and choose who to prosecute for murder," she said of King County prosecutors.
Protesta e n Contra de Los Migrantes Manana!
Oregonians For Immigration Reform (OFIR) will be promoting their brand of white supremacy and demanding the criminalization of undocumented immigrants tomorrow (Sunday). OFIR is allied with the vigilante group The Minutemen.
Where: Pioneer Square
They also felt it necessary to remind their protesters to only bring signs "with obvious responsible messages, not anything that could be potentially construed as racist by the opposition." Now why would they have to worry about anti-immigrant protesters bringing racist signs?
We must behave peacefully so that everyone can clearly see which group possesses an ideology of hate and violence.
I went to the recruiting center for the Tuesday vigil. I was surprised at the number of people waving and honking. Not just the number but the level of interest and energy expressed was decidedly higher than the previous weeks I went.
Maybe it is because it is spring, or maybe it is because of the talk of impending war with Iran, or maybe it is the growing awareness that things are going terribly wrong here in this country and people are slowly realizing that it isn't gonna fix itself. Sooner or later people are going to get aroused and finally angry about the lies this government is telling all so it can make a few people even richer at the expense and lives of many others.
This comic introduced a new villian, the Hate Monger (who is still employed by publisher Marvel Comics, BTW). Note the KKK type hood the Hate Monger wears. Not subtle, but this was actually a pretty brave thing to do in 1963.
Two things are of particular note:
1) In the first panel, the Hate Monger says that you are either "with" him or "against" him. This predates a certain speech by George W. Bush by about 38 years.
2) Note how easily the Hate Monger incites the crowd against the foriegners.
About 30 people and their dogs showed up at Schumacher Furs throughout the day Saturday to protest the fur industry's cruel treatment of animals. We stood together in the cold and pouring rain holding signs, passing out literature, chanting, and enjoying vegan food (doughnuts donated by Voodoo doughnuts, sandwiches, and cupcakes). A bagpipe player, and a boombox periodically playing "Too Legit to Quit" kept us entertained.
The "50% Off Everything Protest Sale (During Protest Only)" signs have reappeared in the windows. In typical low-rent Schumacher fashion, one sign had fallen and remained part-way down all day. Back to his old ways, Schumacher employee/attempted murderer Nick came out with a camera and pointedly took our pictures during the protest. I guess we're lucky that his "weapon of choice" for now is a camera and not a knife (Nick was previously sentenced to 70 months for attacking a woman with a knife) http://portland.indymedia.org/en/2006/04/338370.shtml More bathrobe-looking garments could be seen in the windows, one sporting unfashionably huge collar and cuffs. The only creatures this fur looked beautiful on were its original owners.
About 3 weeks ago, I decided that I'd had enough!! I have grown tired of feeling voiceless in the face of the GOP scandals surfacing weekly, the threat of nuclear war with Iran looming, the undermining of the integrity of our elections, our government's moral bankruptcy on the various human rights issues facing the world, and the utter dismantling of the civil rights guaranteed to Americans through the Constitution. I felt the need to try to stimulate more political consciousness, and more ACTION, among fellow progressives, and even conservatives, who believe that NOW is the time to ACT.
I decided to carry a sign wherever I go in Portland, essentially becoming, as one passerby dubbed me, a "one man parade." My aim is to try to make people think... "Wow, if this guy is so committed and so passionate that the Bush Administration (hereafter BushCo) is destroying the USA, he is carrying a sign and waving a peace sign on the way to and from work, maybe I should be doing more, or at least something... because I, too, am disgusted with the stuff that is happening to this country, under the leadership of a cadre that doesn't believe in Government!"
Say NO - to efforts of the Bush Administration and corporate energy giants to make Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) the next source of foreign Wars, global warming and social injustice. Fri, May 5. 11 am. Portland World Trade Center.
The future of the West Coast's fossil fuel addiction is being planned in Portland this week, and people from all over Oregon (and beyond) are coming in to protest. Join us on Friday, May 5 at 11 am at Portland's World Trade Center to rally against the colonization of Oregon by LNG development, and to send a message to our Big Energy visitors that we advocate for more renewable fuels and conservation rather than more fossil fuels.
