Contact City Council to Support Moratorium on Hayden Island
Over 100 residents of Hayden Island (commonly known as Jantzen Beach) attended a meeting Wednesday night to hear Commissioner Sam Adams proposal to place a moratorium on Hayden Island. His proposal would put a development delay on commercial development that significantly increase vehicle trip or threaten land needed to construct the new Interstate-5 Bridge. The moratorium would end when a neighborhood comprehensive plan is developed that addresses road infrastructure, pedestrian facilities, and modes of mass transit. Adams plans to bring a resolution to Portland City Council on Wednesday, July 12th at 3pm to start the 45-day public notice in order for Portland City Council to consider enacting a temporary moratorium.

Trail Building Weekend in the San Gabriel Mountains
Trail building July 1'st was another work day for the San Gabriel Mountains Trail Builders who once again devoted a day of hot, sweaty, unpaid labor toward repairing trails in the Crystal Lake camping grounds in the Angeles National Forest. Since I wasn't doing anything that day I decided to join them, my bicycle and camping gear being carried up in a pickup truck and Mike, Tom, and I driving up in a car to the Rincon Fire Station.

While we were driving up Highway 39, we passed through a cloud of smoke. I asked Mike if he might turn around so that we could check it out even though it looked like someone parked along the highway was working on her car. I got out and looked over the canyon wall down to the river below, then went back to get Tom. Since Tom fortunately wears a US Forest Service uniform, I asked if he'd come join me in asking the guy down below to put out his ground fire. The area was packed with humans, many of them with BBQ and stoves going, and this guy had a ground fire going, putting everyone's life at risk.

Another Example of Racial Profiling
Just after reading the front page of the Oregonian to see another example of continued racial profiling in Oregon, days later, my son and I became victims too.

I am a 63- year mother, tax paying citizen, and property owner who can now say my family and I can be added to the growing list of racial profiling victims in Portland, OR. On the evening of June 11, 2006 I was at my home doing laundry, and later heard the cries of my son screaming to me that the police are after him. As I emerged from my home, saw 10 police officers, my 18-year old son on his knees, in a controlled position, and a police officer standing over him pointing a taser gun at him, and telling him he would be shot if he moved, I thought I was seeing a movie.

Portland Premiere this Saturday of New Documentary about Juarez murders

7pm, July 8 at St. Francis Church, 330 SE 11th Ave. in Portland, Oregon
(58 minutes, 2006, in Spanish and English with English and Spanish subtitles)
$3 dollar donation requested. no one turned away for lack of funds

At St. Francis Church Saturday, July 8, a new film, "On The Edge," will have its first public screening in Portland. On The Edge is a documentary covering the brutal murders of hundreds of poor young women in the border town of Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, murders that have been repeatedly ignored and unresolved by police and governments since 1993, despite the continued and persistent efforts of family members and activists to obtain justice for the victims. Rather than provide an easy, murder-mystery style solution to the crimes, the film sets out to explain the social, cultural, and economic factors that have created this situation where the killings can continue, and continue to go unpunished. Filmmaker Steev Hise, and guest speaker from PCASC will be in attendance.

MEXICO VOTE FRAUD 07.07.2006 13:15
MEXICO VOTE FRAUD: Obrador ballots found in public dump; up to 3 mil "thrown out"
Mexico Vote Fraud Supporters of Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador show electoral ballots that were found in a public dump. One of Obrador's aides, Claudia Sheinbaum, went on to claim that their party had found "very grave inconsistencies" in 50,000 polling booths, including 18,646 in which there were more votes cast than registered voters.

Obrador calls Mexican elections fradulent, and wants a full recount. Leonel Cota, president of Obrador's PRD party, vowed to "launch a battle for the legitimacy of the election," and a COALITION of the PRD AND TWO OTHER parties held a press conference and issued a statement.... --- Mexico's review of 41 million votes cast in Sunday's disputed presidential election started on Wednesday. Soon, media trumpeted unofficial gap between the two leading candidates, Calderon [a Bush-linked internationalist neofascist, straight out of the Mexican Energy [oil] Department, where he was once Secretary]...the other, Obrador, a [presumably nationalist] leftist, narrowed as a record of fraud increasingly mounted.

Thanks to Obrador's supporters, of whom many are poor ruralites and urbanites who have seen their standard of living fall more by NAFTA and neoliberalist policies, they are eager to see competitive democracy take root in Mexico. This election is seen as a vote for or against more neoliberalist policies. Obrador's supporters (ACROSS SEVERAL PARTIES) could take to the streets to defend democratic legality against an internationalist fascist Bush-linked candidate Calderon's coup. Such foreign interference in Mexican elections has already been noted: Mexican arrests of Bush family linked Choice-Point election corporation from the U.S., which was illegally found in possession of Mexican voter rolls, according to Greg Palast. Evidence of Systemic Gov't Election Racketeering Mounts in Mexico, Witness Comes Forward: IFE employee Loar Cibac Pereira Sanchez said that he was working in one of the electoral agency's regional offices (in Saltillo, Coahuila). He confirms that on Sunday night, as he was entering election results into the IFE PREP system computers, his boss, Jose Luis Fernandez Mier, "ordered him to type in vote tallies favorable to Calderon and threatened to transfer him to a rural office if he didn't obey." Schumacher Furs protest report (still going strong), July 1
Nine months into our weekly protests at Schumacher Furs, and the demonstrations are still going strong, drawing at least a couple dozen protesters throughout the day. Protesters hold signs, pass out literature, talk to passersby, dance, hula hoop, and spread our message of compassion for animals to whoever has an open heart. Meanwhile the Schumachers can always been seen sullen and scowling from within the store.

According to an Oregonian article last Friday, Schumacher has been warned by their landlord that unapproved signs (i.e. those aimed at protesters) must be removed within 20 days or they face possible eviction. Schumacher currently seems to be trying to figure out how to stay within the letter of the law, as they are now hanging their "50% off during protest sale" sign from coat racks within the store, clearly visible from outside. This conflict between Schumacher and the landlord over signage and acceptable behavior seems to be a replay of what occurred months ago. But Schumacher remains as defiant and self-entitled with their landlord as they are with their industry's unethical practices towards animals, and as they are with the city (as evidenced by Schumacher's refusal of mediation, and Gregg Schumacher's quote in a recent monthly publication that Mayor Potter can "go fuck himself").

Fouad’s Murder Remembered(?)
The memory of the torture and murder of this young man by the dark forces that we are paying to serve and to protect us is rapidly fading into the dim public consciousness. Do we really forget so quickly? Saturday will mark the tenth month since Fouad Kaady's death.

This is what the leaders of the dark force count upon, the public's short memory. John Foote, District Attorney for Clackamas County, most assuredly does not wish for his complicity in this heinous miscarriage of "justice" to be remembered when he stands for re election. His "inability" to obtain an indictment in the face of such clear and brutal acts stands as a memorial to his lack of qualification for the position of top cop.

July 4 Troops Home Fast with CODEPINK
We had a good showing at Waterfront Park, Salmon Street Fountain, with about 20 supporters and 8 fasters on site, and we handed out hundreds of postcards, got lots of signatures on the voters pledge, dialogued with a lot of people, some supportive, some not so much.

So what's next? If anyone is fasting the next few days, please let us know, especially if you're doing it in public. We've suggested continuing at Waterfront Park, but if you choose a different location, let us know, we'll get some postcards to you and some support.

Saturday the location is the Hollywood Farmers Market. We have at least two fasters signed up; the market runs from 8 to 1, so we'll be there during that time, on the outer edges near the entrances. We could use a support crew and of course, more fasters.

The Ancient Redwoods: Witnesses to a Fading Republic
Redwoods High The Ancient Redwoods are older by centuries than the American Republic itself. They are found only in the northwest coastal region of the nation. They have witnessed this country's birth struggle, its awful Civil War, its rapacious expansion westward, and now, finally, its imperial hubris and rapid decline. By the time the Bush-Cheney Gang gets done ripping the country off (aided by complicit Democrats), the Republic will be a fading memory.

CIA closing Bin Laden hunt unit like OJ ending bounty for Nichole's killer
Hey conservatives who are so stoked that Bush is "keeping us safe," looks like the Hunt for Osama Bin Laden isn't such a big deal after all. The CIA is closing down the special unit that originated in the Clinton Administration (because he was "soft on terror"), then received copious slabs of pork from Bush to make it look like bin Laden was responsible for 9-11, only to be ignored when it produced evidence that bin Laden was cornered in Tora Bora, so he could get away.

Mexico: Mobilise the masses and call a general strike to stop the electoral fraud
Despite the fact that the majority of the exit polls gave the victory to Lopez Obrador the IFE (Federal Electoral Institute) and Fox are refusing to recognise the results of the elections and are manoeuvring by delaying their official publication, declaring that they could not define a clear outcome given the supposed narrowness of the results.
According to the website "Casa del Plan de los 3 Puntos", Harvard University gave the victory to Obrador by 7 points. A closed poll by the newspaper Milenio gave Obrador 37% and Calderon 36%.

It is important to emphasise these aspects of the election results because they reveal the strength of the class which could be counted on in a struggle against the fraud. It is also important to understand that the strength of the working class is not only numerical, but also qualitative, and this qualitative strength, which could paralyse the country, is on the side of Lopez Obrador. The power to defeat the fraud lies in the hands of Lopez Obrador and the leaders of the trade unions. We must mobilise around the struggle against the fraud, organise meetings, establish committees in defence of the elections and pressurise the leadership of the PRD and the unions to call for militant action, such as a general strike. We cannot and we must not allow Fox and the ruling class to get their way once again! No to a new 1988!

The PRI, despite supposedly questioning the electoral process, is also taking part in this game of fraud. Mobilisation against the fraud is the key, over and above the legal challenges before the Federal Electoral Tribunal.

Rob Los Ricos Greets Supporters After Seven Years Behind Bars
On Saturday, Rob "Los Ricos" Thaxton spoke face to face with his supporters for the first time since being released from Oregon State Penitentiary on Thursday, June 29.

Rob greeted those gathered at Portland's Laughing Horse Books with individual hellos and handshakes, stating repeatedly how overwhelmed and happy he felt to be released. He spent most of the evening taking questions from supporters, who mostly wanted to hear about his day-to-day life behind bars. Rob said he spent most of his time writing letters. "It helped me remember who I was," he said. "It saved my life."

HOPE Health Care initiative and my petitioning experience
The HOPE initiative is a proposed Amendment to the Oregon Constitution that would make access to health care a basic right. It gives the legislature until the year 2009 to adopt a plan that would ensure all Oregonians had access to health care...

I was out less than an hour and collected 12 signatures from my neighbors. I got to meet some cool folks who recently moved in and talked to a few neighbors about starting a tool sharing group. The response was extremely positive and I plan to at least 38 more by Monday. That would be 50 signatures to help the cause.

High Court has Ruled: Bush is a War Criminal

The whole top administration, from Commander in Chief George W. Bush on down, is guilty of war crimes. The punishment for committing war crimes ranges from a lengthy jail sentence to, in the event the crimes in question caused the death of any prisoners being held, to death. And there have been many deaths among those who have been held and tortured on orders of the administration--most recently the three suicides at Guantanamo, which included on man who had only three days earlier been targeted for release (but who never learned this because government's secrecy and tight security prevented his attorneys at the Center for Constitutional Rights from getting the news to him).
