Jeff Free Luers is in the hole
Jeff Free Luers, 2006, Oregon State Penitentiary On July 10th political prisoner Jeffrey Free Luers was transferred to Disciplinary Segregation, commonly known as "the Hole", at Oregon State Penitentiary (OSP)... for Contraband 1 and Disobedience 2, for allegedly having a "diluted urine analysis" (drug test). In other words, the prison has accused him of having urine that is "too clean".

Please do NOT call the prison to complain, etc - it would NOT be helpful (and might be hurtful) during the investigation period.

But PLEASE do send Jeff letters and messages of support. We are sure he would greatly appreciate hearing from you at this time.

Sixth Investigation of Animal Abuse and Fraud In Huntingdon Life Sciences
Huntingdon Life Sciences in the UK (HLS), or Life Sciences Research in the U.S., has been exposed repeatedly committing animal abuse including punching beagle puppies in the face on tape. They torture an kill 500 animals daily, over 180,000 a year. "Since 1997 we have constantly heard from Huntingdon's customers, suppliers and the Government that the beagle beating scenes shot inside HLS by Channel 4 were isolated incidents. Brian Cass the MD of HLS has said many times in the media that things have changed at HLS and what was filmed in 1997 no longer happens. We can now for the first time prove this to be a lie. We can prove that nothing haschanged inside Huntingdon Life Sciences.

EFF's Spying Case Moves Forward - Judge Denies Government's Motion to Dismiss AT&T Case
San Francisco - A federal judge today denied the government's motion to dismiss the Electronic Frontier Foundation's (EFF's) case against AT&T for collaborating with the NSA in illegal spying of millions of ordinary Americans. This allows the case to go forward in the courts.

The court deferred to the government on one matter: the judge ordered that EFF can't compel AT&T to disclose whether or not the telecom participated in a separate program, first reported by USA Today, in which the NSA allegedly examines Americans' phone records without a warrant.

Thurston, Tubbs and Tankersly Cop a Plea - More Pleas Tomorrow
Without any public notice whatsoever, Kevin Tubbs, Darren Thurston and Kendall Tankersly plead guilty in federal court this morning, July 20th at about 9am. A new "information" (like an indictment) was filed under a separate case number for each defendant so that all the other defendants did not receive notice of the hearing and were therefore unable to attend what should have been a public change of plea proceeding!

Tomorrow, July 21, Stan Meyerhoff will plead at 1:30pm; Chelsea Gerlach at 2pm and Suzanne Savoie at 2:30pm in the US District Court in Eugene (7th and Pearl). Come early.

From: Darren Thurston Support Update #12: On July 20th, 2006, I entered a guilty plea to charges regarding my involvement in an Animal and Earth Liberation Front action and the related overall conspiracy as charged in the FBI's Operation Backfire. At a meeting in late April, federal prosecutors and law enforcement agents informed me of three co-operating witnessees willing to testify to my involvement in the Lichtfield Bureau of Land Management wild horse release and fire. Green Scare Target Zachary Jenson Pleads Guilty, Snitches on Friend

Jenson, along with Eric McDavid and Lauren Weiner, were arrested January 13 2006 near Auburn, California. The three were arrested on an informant's evidence before alleged eco-sabotage occurred. Both Lauren and Zach have now agreed to testify against Eric, according to the US Attorney.

Sacramento Prisoner Support's Statement on Zachary Jenson Turning Informant

We at Sacramento Prisoner Support are extremely shocked and discouraged by Zachary Jenson's decision to 'take a deal' and inform on and effectively abandon his remaining co-defendant Eric McDavid. Zachary felt that he could no longer cope with waiting for trial at Sacramento County Jail and has decided to take the same plea agreement that Lauren Weiner took in May, which requires him to "cooperate fully with the government, and any other federal, state, or local law enforcement agency, as the government directs." His new charges will hold a maximum 5 year sentence, but Zachary will have to live with himself for the rest of his life knowing he abandoned and informed on a friend.

My learning experience at OHSU a year later!

I went to OHSU to pick up information and ended up getting arrested. A year later, there is still no explanation.

A yellow door hanger left on my property described some disturbing facts about OHSU and their vivisection animal research. On the morning of Aug.17,'05, I phoned OHSU President Peter Kohler's office (503 494-8252) and inquired about getting their side of the issue. I spoke to someone who identified herself as Tiffany*. She offered to mail the information packet, printed by OHSU for public education on the subject, or she said I could pick it up in Mac Hall across from the hospital. Since I was going out anyway, I elected to pick it up.

San Francisco video journalist Josh Wolf is being charged with civil contempt for exercising his first amendment right and refusing to provide a federal grand jury with video footage he shot at a protest last summer. Happy Impeachment Day!

This is no time for political strategizing. Every member of Congress is sworn to uphold and defend the Constitution, and it is being gravely threatened by this president.

The Center for Constitutional Rights, which has been playing a leading role in battling the Bush administration's attacks on the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, and international law, has declared today to be Impeachment Day, with teach-ins scheduled around the country.

Seems like a great occasion to offer up 10 reasons for impeaching the president, as presented in Barbara Olshansky's and my new book The Case for Impeachment: The Legal Argument for Removing President George W. Bush from Office.

Egg on the Mercury's Face - A Reader Responds to the Mercury
Which came first the chicken or the egg? Well the egg came first on the Mercury's face, followed shortly by the chickens coming home to roost. Of course, I'm speaking in response to the Letters (Not) to the Editor in the latest evacuation of that poo-poo tunnel called the Portland Mercury. I'm guessing this is the kind of language that their readers are familiar with and can best understand. Now let's get down to poultry.

Cleanup at Tototngna Nature Trail and Visitor Center
On 15/Jul/06, the San Gabriel Mountains Trailbuilders and a group of Boy Scouts worked on the Tototngna Nature Trail in the Angeles National Forest at the Crystal Lake recreation area. This trail is part of a series of hiking trails which have not been open to the public since the 2002 Williams and Curve fires which were followed by heavy rains and extensive flooding. Tototngna is in particularly poor condition since in addition to the fire and flooding damage, the trail was used by a tractor and parts of the trail were fairly hard to distinguish.

As I usually like to do, my single speed bicycle was put into a pickup truck and the crews drove up to the Rincon Fire Station to pick up our tools. From Rincon Station we drove to the barricade gate around mile marker 29.6 (which often imposes a bit of an intelligence test to people who have to figure out what key works with what lock, and has to figure out the mechanics of angular rotation) and from there on up another 9 miles or so to Crystal Lake.

A Short Tour of Yamhill Wine Country
trading trees for grapes As city dwellers it's often easy to forget the existence or the experience of a calm and serene countryside. As a brief respite from the urban oasis, a beautiful friend of mine spirited us away to the country in an automobile. This kind of excursion, I should point out, was a somewhat regular past-time among folks for a lazy Sunday afternoon. We had the good fortune to take our trip on a weekday when most people are at work.

When asked about our destination, I thought to explore the southwest Metro region of Yamhill county, well known for its vineyards and nurseries. Little did we know, that the area between the towns of Newberg, McMinnville, and Yamhill is ripe with world-class vineyards offering some of the most delectable wines I've ever experienced. As a supporter of local agriculture in general, my intent here is not to trumpet particular wine purveyors, but rather to offer a glimpse of what was a sublime experience, and to suggest that you try a similar one.

Aquelegia comments: If one knew the history of the region portrayed so fondly in the peice, one would not look at the vineyards in Yamhill county so favorably. Those coastal range foothills were some of the best low elevation habitat for old growth forests in the world. [ read the full comment ]

palestine journal: 17 july

every day i have to listen to the bang-bang-bang of the israeli training camp just over the hill in the nearby israeli settlement.....it's non-stop.....training to head into gaza and start shooting palestinians. or the F16s that sometimes whiz overhead....on training missions before they head into lebanon to drop bombs on the heads of civilians.....over 100 killed, and only one of them is a fighter with hezbollah. the rest: men, women and children.....

i doubt that my friends in the USA are able to view this footage that we are watching on the arabic tv stations - they've stopped reporting, even, they don't have to say anything, just hour after hour of video footage of charred childrens' bodies, destroyed bridges, convoys of evacuees (two of which have been hit by Israeli missiles, killing over 30 people who were trying to head north away from the missiles), burning buildings.... Random Thoughts on Israel's Merciless Attack on Lebanon

I wonder about the real purpose of Israel's merciless, murderous campaign against Lebanon. I made a tasteless joke at work last week, when this carnage started, that "at least there will be something interesting on TV this weekend". When I arrived home, the evening news said little about what was really going on. It still hasn't even brushed the surface of the sordid story.

Here is the mainstream media's version of the situation: "Hezbollah is doing bad things on orders from Syria or Iran. Therefore, Israel must destroy the entire infrastructure of Lebanon (and plenty of its innocent children, women, men, and animals) without cease." If you pay a little closer attention to the pundits, which is very hard to do, you get: "Syria and Iran must stop Lebanon from doing bad things, or they are next." [ read more ]

National Radio Show Threatens Life of Cyclists
On Thursday the 13th of July, according to a story posted on www.bikeportland.org, a local Shock Jock had allegedly made remarks inciting his listeners to do violent acts to cyclist while driving. Sadly, the radio station pulled the Internet archive before we could verify it and now refuses to release it. Several FCC complaints have been lodged.

Today I recorded the show and sent a few emails to the Shock Jock, who goes by the radio name PK because of "security reasons". I have created website of some sound bites that has some chilling remarks and examples of the rage this individual has focused on not only myself but the bicycling community. Even more frightening this show is nationally syndicated.

Alberta Coop celebrates 5th Anniversary
Alberta Coop at 15th and Alberta celebrated its fifth anniversary this past weekend with bands, a potluck and founding member recognitions.

The Alberta Coop started as a buyer's cooperative in the late 90's by a group of community minded visionaries who realized NE Portland needed it's own coop. Many of the early members were supporters and members of either Food Front or People's but those stores were too far away. The members started as a buyer's club with the long term vision to open a store in NE Portland.

From the time the alarm clock goes off in the morning you, your family, friends, and the rest of the nation are under government scrutiny. When you go to bed, the government knows where you have gone, what you have read, what you have bought and whom you are going to bed with at the end of the day. Your file contains your daily existence just waiting for someone to pull it up and see if you are a "good" citizen of the state.

Ontario Police Raid Grassy Narrows Blockade: 17 Arrests Reported
A blockade supporter flies the Mohawk Warrior Flag July 15 - Ontario Provincial Police have reportedly arrested 17 people at Grassy Narrows in retaliation for Thursday's peaceful blockade of the Trans-Canada Highway near Kenora, Ontario. The blockade by Rainforest Action Network activists and Grassy Narrows First Nations people drew worldwide attention to the decade-long fight to stop clearcut destruction at Grassy Narrows

The latest reports from the camp say more than fifty police officers have cut off all access to and from the camp. Police set up a highway checkpoint yesterday and began arresting native and non-native people involved in Thursday's action.

The barricade on the Trans-Canada Highway Thursday included activists locked down to cement barrels and a Weyerhaueser logging truck, and one who perched at the top of a 10-meter tripod. The protests succeeded in blocking logging trucks from operations in Grassy Narrows for most of the day and evening. Police made no arrests at the time and did not attempt to remove the barricade, which was dismantled voluntarily around 10 pm Thursday.
