Nation's First Roadless Logging Began Today; Unprecedented Action Ignites Protest

The Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest began logging today in a roadless forest that was protected by the 2001 Roadless Area Conservation Rule which protected 58 million acres of public forest from industrial logging, and road-building. The Bush administration is now logging roadless forests, despite massive public opposition and a pending court cases challenging the logging.

More than 100 citizens from across the country attended a rally in front of the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest office in Medford today to protest the first logging of Roadless Areas. A dozen people with shirts reading "Roadless is Priceless" sat down in a road in front of the Forest Service office with potted trees. This resulted in twelve arrests, with charges still pending.

8/8: Resistance to Roadless Logging Escalates as Protesters Blockade Bridge

Roadless Area Logging Equals Broken Promise

Controversial logging began today in Mike's Gulch, a National Forest roadless area in Southern Oregon. It's the first roadless area logging in six years and part of a systematic rollback of environmental protections by the Bush administration.

Today, Silver Creek Timber Co. began logging in the South Kalmiopsis roadless area, located in the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest in Southern Oregon. The logging is the first logging allowed in a National Forest roadless areas since the Bush administration replaced the popular 2001 Roadless Area Conservation Rule in 2005.

Rod Coronado Sentenced to 8 Months Today!
Rod recieved an eight month sentence and was taken into custody at about noon today. The judge felt that it was very important to preserve fear of/respect for the law, otherwise anarchy may prevail.

He also received 3 years probation and is not to post anything; print, internet, interview..., with any animal rights or environmental organization that is associated with violence, including but not limited to EF!, ALF & ELF. The government was very aggresive in their assertion that dismantling the lion trap and spreading feline urine were violent acts. The judge concurred.

Mayor Acknowledges Concerns of Tigard First
We've got their attention! Tigard Mayor Craig Dirksen addressed the possibility of Wal-Mart coming to Tigard in the August City Newsletter. While the Mayor is correct in stating that an application will be approved or denied based on the merits of the land use application, we are confident that sufficient concerns exist to deny a SuperCenter in the Tigard Triangle. Until the existing traffic problems are solved, the local roads cannot handle another big-box store in the area.

Tigard First is committed to helping residents stay involved in the growth of our City, and to encourage development that enhances our community. Revitalization of downtown is key to Tigard's livability and protecting that vision is a main goal of our group. Additionally, there is evidence that Wal-Mart contributes to crime, repeatedly violate environmental regulations, and damage local business. City officials should be concerned about locating a Wal-Mart just 1/4 mile from the heart of Tigard. There is also a significant wetland located on the site, one of the rapidly vanishing natural areas left in the City.

Fouad Kaady Murdered Have We Learned Anything-YET?
Eleven months ago, agents of the fascist state (Sandy Police Officer Bergin, Clackamas County Deputy Willard) took it upon themselves to terminate the life of a terribly injured and burned naked and unarmed man, simply to avoid getting his blood (or hanging skin) upon their clean uniforms.

Guess what, coppers? You have his blood on your hands, and upon your black souls. Neither will wash off. The details of this heinous crime have been well documented here, on Portland Indymedia, despite the attempts by the District Attorney to obfuscate the murder and to justify it after the fact by having the "grand" jury wave it's magic wand, declaring no foul. How many more times will we allow the flawed "grand" jury system act as our conscience an arbiter of truth?

TEL AVIV : thousands against the war
A young man mounted the podium. "My name is Zohar Milgrom. I am 26 years old, an activist in Yesh Gvul. I have got an emergency call up up order. Tomorrow I have to show up at the army and get sent to Lebanon. I will go there to declare that I am refusing. This is the only thing I can do in face of the public silence, in face of the war crimes committed in our name, in face of the leaders who have sent soldiers again into the Lebanese swamp. I will dedicate my time of imprisonment to all the people who suffer in this war, the Jews and the Arabs, the Israelis and Lebanese and Palestinians, to stopping the madness and saving their lives. Before I finish I would like to read to you the words of my friend, Isma'il abd-el Hal of Gaza, who would have liked to stand here in Tel-Aviv and address you, were it possible. This is what he asked me to tell you: Stop this war now! This war is the mother of terrorists and extremists! We are all in danger! We have to struggle together, to end this horror, to live together in peace, in two states!"

After he went down, to the sound of applause, a Yesh Gvul speaker announced a solidarity demonstration for next Saturday outside Military prison 6 at Atlit - where refusing Captain Amir Pester has been for more than week and where Milgrom will probably soon join him.

N.E.S.T. finds 35 red tree vole nests in S.O
A red tree vole nest The Northwest Ecosystem Survey Team (N.E.S.T.) has been surveying in southern Oregon in three timber sales: Tennesse Lime, Anderson West and East Fork. We found 35 previously undiscovered red tree vole nests, when verified by the Bureau of Land Management, these nests will require protection that will lead to the reduction of these timber sales to the possible cancellation of certain timber sale units.

N.E.S.T. is going to continue it's surveys and we need new volunteers to continue this work.

Interview with peace activist Brian Willson
Brian Willson cylcling for peace On August 11th, 2006, The Veterans for Peace are holding their annual national conference in Seattle, Washington. One of the states goals of the VfP is to abolish as an instrument of national policy. Recognizing the links between the necessity of war to maintain the "status quo" of oil consumption and the United States Empire to the implausibility of reaching sustainability, Brian Willson and a number of other Veterans for Peace and peace activists are headed to Seattle, sans the fossil fuels.

Starting in Eugene, Oregon, the Veterans Human-Powered Ride for Peace and Sustainability is touring on bicycle and bio-diesel fuel to promote awareness of alternatives to oil, and the need to create more environmentally sound and sustainable lifestyles. While the tour visit Olympia, Washington, Free Radio Olympia dj Rhino caught up with Brian Willson to discuss the tour, Veterans for Peace, and sustainability.

On August 2, 2006 Native tribes who depend upon the salmon runs of the Klamath River for both subsistence and ceremony held a Rally in Portland Oregon to demonstrate the necessity that the dams on this river be removed.

The Rally began at Holladay park, near Lloyd Center. Arriving a little late I missed speakers, but caught the tail end of one impassioned speech by an Indigenous man. "We're fish people, we're people of the Klamath River; we were honored when we were born. Now it's time for us to give something back and honor the resource, and more importantly, honor the children. I want to say something about the Klamath tribes of Oregon. These guys have not seen salmon since 1917, and that's a travesty."

Save Mike's Gulch! Get on the bus this Sunday!
The purchaser of Mike's Gulch, the massive timber sale located in the South Kalmiopsis inventoried roadless area adjacent to the world-renowned Kalmiopsis Wildlerness, has filed his required 7-day notice to initiate logging. Logging will commence on Monday the 7th. The stakes are high. This would be the first inventoried roadless area sale to move forward since the popular Clinton-era roadless rule was enacted.

Clear your calendars, play hooky and join Back2theWall and the Cascadia Wildlands Project in a strong show of opposition to this reckless proposal and support of wild Siskiyou protection. We will be joining forces with many different conservation groups, community members and supporters at the Siskiyou Forest Supervisors office (where all the big decisions get made) at noon on Monday, August 7.

The bus named Cool will be leaving Portland on Sunday August 6th at 01:30 pm and we will be camping near Medford and then returning to Portland Monday evening following the protest and a carpool in Eugene leaves from Kinko's back parking lot (13th and Willamette St.) at 5 pm on Sunday. Come prepared and self-sufficient. [ read more ]

Support the governor's petition to protect roadless forests!

Oregon Governor Ted Kulongowski has called repeatedly for full protection of all 1.9 million acres of roadless Oregon forest. Ignored by the Bush Administration he is now suing the Administration in federal court. This and several other suits that might again protect Mike's Gulch are still pending. Nonetheless, logging is moving forward.

The Bush Administration claims that governors are allowed to petition for protection of roadless areas in their states. The petitions are not due until this Fall. The Administration promised interim protection for all roadless areas pending review of those petitions. The Administration has broken this promise at Mike's Gulch.

The Governor is holding an open hearing on roadless forest protection in Medford on August 16th. Please plan to attend this event as well. [ read more ]

Roadless Area Rule Violated by Siskiyou Forest Service in 2005

Without much fanfare or controversy the Siskiyou National Forest planned and allowed the clear-cut logging inside the North Kalmiopsis roadless area as part of the Berry salvage logging timber sale in the Biscuit burn in 2005. Thus the US Forest Service unilaterally decided to violate the Roadless Area Conservation Plan at least one year before Federal Courts were to decide the legality of such actions. I suppose Siskiyou National Forest personnel figured that they would get away with this because no one would notice, at least not until the trees were cut and hauled away. Well, I guess they were right. Also, I suppose Forest Service personnel told them selves, well even if we do get caught no one would get punished. In fact they would likely get a pat on the back, a bonus or even promotion for doing the Bush administration's and Oregon's timber baron's bidding. [ read more ]

Support Independent Journalist Josh Wolf!
Josh Wolf Call and Write The SF Board of Supervisors!

On Tuesday August 1st Josh Wolf, an independent journalist working in San Francisco, refused to testify or turn over unpublished video out-takes to a Federal Grand Jury investigating a July, 2005, anti-G8 demonstration. He was charged with civil contempt and has been jailed until further notice. He could be held for up to a year (the remainder of the Grand Jury).

Josh was never convicted of a crime. He is being held on civil contempt in order to coerce him to testify and turn over his unpublished work product to a federal grand jury.

We encourage everyone to support Josh while he is being held at FCI Dublin. If we keep on fighting there is a good chance we can win Josh's release. There are many way in which you can help. Please refer to Josh's support website for more information:

Photogs of Save the Klamath Salmon Rally
Native peoples and their supporters, about 150-200 strong, gathered at Holladay Park near Lloyd Center at 11:00 am and marched to the Portland Convention Center for a rally where International hydropower corporations are holding their bi-annual HydroVision Conference.

The Rally and March was energetic and punctuated with chants, both organized and spontaneous. People felt this issue strongly deep in their heart and cried out loudly for the removal of these dams, blocking not only the salmon, but a way of life and a relationship centuries, millenniums old.

The March was at least three blocks in length when marching down to the Convention Center, where Native speakers from the tribes affected by the dams demanded the dams be removed and asked supporters to contact their elected leaders with this message: BRING THE SALMON HOME!

Murray Bookchin, visionary social theorist, dies at 85
Murray Bookchin Murray Bookchin, the visionary and often iconoclastic social theorist and activist, died during the early morning of Sunday, July 30th in his home in Burlington, Vermont. During a prolific career of writing, teaching and political activism that spanned half a century, Bookchin forged a new anti-authoritarian outlook rooted in ecology, dialectical philosophy and left libertarianism.

During the 1950s and '60s, Bookchin built upon the legacies of utopian social philosophy and critical theory, challenging the primacy of Marxism on the left and linking contemporary ecological and urban crises to problems of capital and social hierarchy in general. Beginning in the mid-sixties, he pioneered a new political and philosophical synthesis—termed social ecology—that sought to reclaim local political power, by means of direct popular democracy, against the consolidation and increasing centralization of the nation state. The Qana Massacre And The Risks Of Relying On Israeli Propaganda
This article discusses an example of American mainstream media bias towards Israel that occurred during a discussion of the Qana massacre on CNN's Paula Zahn program, and how she got burned when the Israeli Defense Force retracted its statement that Hezbollah had fired Katyusha from an area near the bombed apartment building, in spite of the fact that a day earlier it had disseminated a surveillance video that purported to show a Hezbollah battery firing rockets from this Qana neighborhood on the day the building was bombed.

Hezzballah still completley intact and fighting
The Israelis got into Lebanon by air and had a 4-hour fight to get in a hospital. There were 16 Lebanese killed, 17 injured, and 5 captives taken. Hezballah surrounded the hospital after Israeli troops secured it; the US helicopters used by the Israeli's then airlifted the solders out of Lebanon. There needs to be a cease fire, I do not mean to state something so obvious, but the Israeli and Lebanese solders have both had minimal causalities while many civilians in Lebanon and Israel are getting killed. Just hours ago Hezballah fired 200 rockets into Israel and destroyed 5 tanks at the border. The reason the rest of the Lebanese army is not getting involved is that with Israel having such state of the art weapons from the US, the Lebanese Army without Hezballah would easily be destroyed. It's getting very difficult to get information out of Lebanon.

Update on Jeff Free Luers in the hole
Jeff Free Luers - Oregon State Penitentiary Jeff is still in the hole; please continue to write to him!

We have received some updated information on Jeff's situation. He is still in the hole (solitary segregation). He was given a urinalysis (drug test) and the results were "too clean" so they gave him two more tests and both came up negative for drugs. He has still not had a hearing and his situation has been put "under investigation". At this point he is scheduled to remain in the hole until at least August 20th.

If they find him guilty, Jeff will lose his contact visits for a year. This means he will only be able to see his family and friends from behind glass. And, the visits will be limited to one hour, and may be limited to only a certain number per week. He also faces a $100 fine. His attorney is in contact with prison officials and we will continue to update you as we hear more.

Jeff still needs your letters of support, so please continue writing to him. It takes him a little longer to receive his mail but he is able to receive a stack of letters at a time. He has also requested some reading materials. If you are interested in purchasing a book for him (must by new and mailed directly from the publisher or Amazon.com) please contact us directly for a book title off the list he has requested. We are hoping to have books ordered THIS WEEK (by August 5th).

Photos from the Lebanon/Palestine Rally

On Sunday I was greeted by more than 500 supporters of Lebanon and Palestine in what proved to be an amazing day of solidarity on this front. I managed to take lots of pictures including a couple of the TWO counter=protesters who were attempting to incite physical altercations...

The speeches said it all, Israel is occuping Lebanon and HAS been occupying Gaza for FAR too long. THe Anti US government sentiment was shared by Muslim, Christian, Jew and Rebel alike. It was shocking to me to see and HEAR so many voices coming together. When they had the rally a couple of weeks ago, things were relatively quiet, but not today. Voices were raised and they were raised with anger. I was a bit worried about my sign decrying the US and Israel as the new 3rd Reich, but those worries were soon aliviated when I saw the COUNTLESS signs comparing both countries to Nazi Germany. Nobody can deny the comparison. [ read more ]

Photos of the Rally against Israel's war crimes

About 1000 people were at a rally on July 30 in downtown Portland to condemn Israel's war crimes against civilians in Lebanon and Gaza.

Many of the protest signs and the speakers articulated these messages: our horror, outrage and condemnation of Israel's merciless and unrelenting killing of civilians (especially the children!) in Lebanon and Gaza; an immediate ceasefire; an end to Israeli occupation in both countries; justice and peace for the Lebanese and Palestinian people.

There was a palpable sadnesss in the air for as people sang and spoke about their love and support for Lebanon and Palestine, we all knew that these countries were/are still being destroyed, and more people are dying as Israel's war crimes and terrorism continue, with US money and complicity. Global Warming: Cascadia’s possible future
Map of Cascadia during the Missoula floods Many people I know who live in the Portland area and the Willamette Valley think that as the sea levels rise we will be immune to the drastic changes. Some believe that only those living on seaboards will be displaced. However, as Gore's docu-movie and others point out. Not only are the ice caps melting but the tundra is melting (think permafrost). A huge body of fresh water is about to be released into ground water, streams and rivers, lakes, and the atmosphere. How will this affect people in the Cascadia? Aside from the affect on weather a great deal of underground water is about to be released into the biosphere. According to several sources, anyone in low-lying areas will be affected. And, people in high lying areas will find it hard to find potable water. Some say that the super-fund sites and chemical dumps that have been contained along rivers and streams and underground vaults (think the Umatilla Chemical Depot in Hermiston, Oregon or the areas of the Willamette River around North Portland) will add high level pollution to this released water. Beyond the discussion of pollution, there needs to be a discussion about water borne disease and increasing and changing insect populations.

Qana Massacre Protested at State Department Rally
Arrests at the State Department Washington, D.C. - It was steamy at "Foggy Bottom," the site of the U.S. State Department's headquarters, on Monday, July 31, 2006, near the campus of George Washington U., at 23rd and C St. (NW). The noon time heat and high humidity were only a part of it. It even got hotter as the passionate speakers/chanters ripped into the U.S. Secretary of State, Condi Rice; the Bush-Cheney Gang; and the ongoing wrongs of Zionist Israel in Lebanon. They were there to demand a ceasefire in Lebanon and to protest the Qana Massacre. The sponsors for the rally were Arab-American and Peace groups. It was attended by about 100 demonstrators.

Background: The Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) targeted for bombing a shelter at Qana (Cana), in Southern Lebanon on Sunday, July 30, 2006. The air strike cost the lives of 56 civilians, most of them children. The Israelis' lame excuse that it was "a mistake," rang hollow, especially coming after the recent IOF's attack on a UN outpost at Khiyam, also in Southern Lebanon, that took the lives of four unarmed observers. Media reports indicate the bomb used at Khiyam, a precision-guided U.S.-made weapon, was the identical kind employed at Qana. (1) Qana (or Cana) is also the same village the IOF viciously shelled on April 18, 1996, killing 110 civilians, many of them women and children. (2)

palestine journal: 2 august

"Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter." -- Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Here is a journal sent from Hanady Salman, editor of the Lebanese paper As-Safir.....
I feel I could have written it myself.
"We write the news while crying", she says.
hey, aren't we reporters supposed to be able to 'separate themselves' from their story....de-personalize it? I mean, we're supposed to be 'objective', "not take sides"....

somehow though.....we just can't keep from crying.
